Ridgewood Resident Accused of Running and AirBnb Responds

Cat on Porch Ridgewood

To whomever posted -Anonymous January 12, 2017 at 8:05 pm- that put my AirBNB listing up with my address-which incidentally is kept totally confidential until AFTER the guest passes a 5-point security check. But Thank You for noticing that I am a hard-working professional who is willing to share her beautiful home with others. As an immigrant to this country, I founded a national association to help women. I help them achieve their national credential in order to find jobs, and get better ones, then I help them continue their education with one-on-one mentoring (some of the cars that are “in and out of there all the time”.)…so I guess I just like helping people. My guests park on my property and I have had no complaints from neighbors. AirBnb has helped me pay for taxes, repairs on my home, upgrade plumbing etc., so that the value is maintained. And who are the guests that stay with me? I have three different grandparents that come to visit their grandchildren, nurses that work long shifts at Valley Hospital, a son who lives in California that comes regularly to visit his mother in a nursing home, a self-employed marketing consultant who comes here for business, and then I have had two different couples who have stayed here while they bought a home in the area-they wanted to see what it was like living in Ridgewood–without this experience, they may not have chosen to live here! The sharing economy is an international model that can be found in small cities all over the world that only enhances the diversity and value of the community.

Running: Ridgewood Run notes

THE RECORD

Bank on Brown

For the 40th consecutive year — the entire life of the event — Jacob Brown lent a supporting hand at the Ridgewood Run.

This time it was giving out water and juice to runners not far from the finish line Monday.

He was overseeing quite a few members of his Ridgewood High School girls track team that also were volunteering their services on the refreshment line for the thirsty competitors.

In past years, Brown has done any number of jobs at the race, including patrolling the grounds, picking up trash, using his ever-present camera for photography work — basically whatever assignment that needed to be handled, he did it enthusiastically.

The 69-year-old Brown, who is retiring after 44 seasons as the legendary coach of the Maroons’ track and field squad (and as a health education teacher) was there at the beginning in 1976 when race founder Fred d’Elia turned to him for advice.

“Basically it was all about the logistics of how to put something like this together starting from scratch; I was sort of like an aide-de-camp for Fred,” said Brown.

“He was able to get all the politicians and police and other departments to close the streets off, but he also needed a plan to actually formulate on how and where everything would take place.

“We were very surprised that first year because we thought that less than a hundred people would show up and we got eight or nine times that many entrants.”

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — A year ago Mike Fisher was too sick to compete. This time it was a healthy Fisher who made the rest of the field look pale in comparison next to him.

Employing a sound strategy all the way through, Fisher, of Brookline, Mass., earned first place in the Men’s 10K at the 40th annual Fred d’Elia Ridgewood Run on Monday with a time of 32 minutes, 17 seconds, as he broke away from Fair Lawn’s Anthony Fatuzzo (32:57) down the stretch to build a solid margin at the end.

“I was supposed to run here last year for the first time but on the eve of the race I came down with food poisoning,” said the 31-year- old Fisher. “This time, I was at full strength and the weather [mid-60s and a small breeze at race time in the morning] was a major boost; the cloud cover overhead helped. And I used my experience in marathons [five, including Boston twice] to pave my way through some of the rolling hills and winding paths in the middle of the course.”

Also taking a clear route to a championship was Roberta Groner of Randolph, who was clocked in 35:53 in the Women’s 10K, with Leonia’s Elizabeth Eickelberg coming on strong in the final couple of miles to place second in 36:22.

“I was happy with my overall performance,” said Groner, who moved from Pittsburgh to Morris County less than a year ago. “It doesn’t get much better than this. I didn’t need to do much sprinting and I kept a pretty even keel throughout. There were some ridges with some slight slopes and then a few dips, but overall the course ran very smoothly.”

Ridgewood resident to run with MR8 Boston Marathon charity team

Ridgewood resident to run with MR8 Boston Marathon charity team

APRIL 20, 2014    LAST UPDATED: SUNDAY, APRIL 20, 2014, 9:33 AM

When Ridgewood resident Kevin Entwistle, 21, heard about the bombing at last year’s Boston Marathon, a string of events followed. He became obsessed with the crushing TV news. He went on a run. And he decided to run his first marathon in Boston in 2014.

Ridgewood High School graduate Kevin Entwistle, 21, took a pre-marathon run on Thursday in his charity team’s MR8 shirt, in honor of 8-year-old Martin Richard, who died in the Boston Marathon bombing last year. Entwistle will run the marathon for Team MR8 this Monday, April 21.

The decision was natural; he felt a connection to the area his whole life. He has family in Massachusetts, he is a big Boston sports fan, and his father has run in the Boston Marathon twice.

“It was like an immediate response,” he recalled.

And one year later, without having even crossed the finish line yet – that will come this Monday, April 21 – Entwistle has already made Boston proud, by raising more than $7,100 for the charitable foundation created in honor of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy who was killed in the marathon bombings last year. Many Ridgewood residents are already among his donors, and he’s looking to other members of his local community to help raise even more money to reach, and hopefully surpass, his goal of $7,500.

A Nation That Is ‘Boston Strong’

A Nation That Is ‘Boston Strong’

April 16, 2014 at 6:30 am

After the bombing shattered the Boston Marathon last year, hundreds of runners left their shoes behind in a spontaneous memorial. Many wrote messages on them.

Those are now part of an exhibit at the Boston Public Library—but thousands of people addedpairs of their own running shoes to an outdoor memorial in addition to cards and flowers over the past few days.

Boston was a tragic reminder that terrorists still seek to do us harm, but the survivors have amazed the country. Brothers Paul and J.P. Norden each lost a leg in the attack last year. Yesterday, CNN reported that they set out to walk the 26.2-mile marathon route with family and friends.

As President Obama said: “One year later, we also stand in awe of the men and women who continue to inspire us—learning to stand, walk, dance and run again.”

Following memorials in Boston yesterday, this year’s marathon will take place on April 21. It will be the second-largest in the history of the race, with 36,000 official participants. Security will be tighter; spectators won’t be able to join in and run alongside registered runners, and there will be restrictions on bringing backpacks into the area.

Those changes show the continued adaptability of security and law enforcement personnel on the ground—who responded bravely to the bombing last year. It is imperative that individual Americans remain vigilant and that our leaders continue to take a proactive approach to stopping terrorism.

Terrorists have succeeded in attacking the U.S. homeland four times since 9/11, including the Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and wounded at least 264 others. But more than 50 plots have been thwarted before the public was in danger. At the one-year anniversary of the Boston attack, it is worth taking a moment to be thankful for all the safe events the nation has held in the past year.

And thank you, Boston, for leading the way—for reminding us all that the people of your city, and America, will not be intimidated.

“It is time to take back Boylston Street and to take back the finish line,” said race director Dave McGillivray. “It is time to run again.”
