Affordable housing gets new home in N.J.

In the past several weeks, a number of events have had an impact on the Garden State’s court-mandated affordable housing program, often called “Mount Laurel housing.”

Long administered by the state Council on Affordable Housing, the program has required every town to provide homes that low- and moderate-income residents can afford. This housing was funded in part by fees paid by developers. In recent weeks, though, the governor has signed another 2½-year moratorium on the fees, and COAH has been abolished. The state’s Department of Community Affairs now will administer the program.  (MacKenzie, Gannett)

ABOUT five years ago, New Jersey, in response to a cycle of flooding and drought, instituted an ambitious plan of watershed management.

Since every resident in the state lives in a watershed, it was a matter of dividing the state into manageable areas. There are 20 delineated watershed areas. Some watershed areas, such as the Passaic River, are so large they are divided into three areas.

The Department of Environmental Protection was to have a representative in each of the watersheds (one DEP representative may cover more than one area), a utility (sewerage authority, water authority, gas and electric company), health departments, environmental commissions, academic institutions, community parks groups and public interest citizens. Management of each watershed had four components: public advisory, open space, technical advisory and education and outreach. It was one of the best ideas put forward by our state.

For the ninth year in a row, the Ridgewood Public Library is bringing the latest cutting-edge documentaries to the village. Reel Voices Film Festival organizer Roberta Panjwani has been viewing movies both in person and on DVDs all year to select just the right mix for her audience.

“They all have a common thread of social justice, of a larger issue being seen through an individual experience,” she said. This year she saw more than 40 films before selecting five that she is confident will please the audience.

At the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, she viewed as many documentaries as possible to test how they screened with a live audience. “A lot look great on paper but not after seeing them,” she noted. “And others were really good, but some not quite right for the Ridgewood audience.”

PJ, I know this thread is old, and perhaps I’ve missed smtg. I am pretty sure that Citizen’s Park was purchased with a bond issue from the VOR and a Bergen County grant. I do not believe that dime one was donated from any “long time residents” or even any “new arrivals” as 8:35am talks about. Just like Habernickel, we’re all paying for these purchases in one way or anohter (through our taxes). So, would be helpful to clarify, rather that to spread misinformation

There was some discussion at last week’s Village Council meeting about this.  See below.

He noted that other major fund-raising initiatives have been devoted to Ridgewood’s parks in the past. Citizens Park was acquired by the village through fund-raising efforts in the late 1960s, an effort led by current Open Space Committee citizen member Frank Schott.

“Smash & Grab” Vehicle Break-Ins Increase Near County Bike Path

A recent increase of “smash and grab” vehicle break-ins near the Saddle River County Bike Path has thus far baffled members of the Ridgewood and Bergen County Police Departments.

The most recent occurrence was reported at approximately 6:00 PM on Saturday when vehicle owner returned to her car and found the front passenger side window smashed out, and her purse missing.

Responding Ridgewood PD personnel Sgt. Brian Pullman, Patrol Officer Kyle Finch, and Patrol Officer Ricky Thomas found several discarded purses in a nearby trash dumpster during the subsequent investigation.  It is unknown what, if any, personal contents were recovered with the purses.

When leaving your vehicle unattended, purses, wallets, computers, cell phones, GPS devices, etc. should be removed from plain sight and locked securely in the vehicle’s trunk or hidden storage compartment.  Vehicles should always be locked when left unattended.

The new running track at Bergenfield High School has been dedicated to the memory of Col. Floyd “Jim” Thompson, the Bergenfield native who became the longest-held prisoner of war in U.S. history.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Kuchar and Principal James Fasano welcomed guests and led the ceremony on the main field of the school at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16.

Members of the Bergenfield Board of Education, Veterans Advisory Committee, borough officials and many BHS students were present at the dedication ceremony.

The dedication was intentionally scheduled for the third Friday in September, which is recognized as National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Thompson, a member of the Bergenfield High School Class of 1951, was America’s longest-held POW, having spent nearly nine years in captivity in Vietnam.

Dear Ridgewood Parent or Guardian,

Today at  Somerville Elementary School a male adult  was observed on the back field of  the school  at lunchtime. It appeared that this man was holding a camera and possibly taking photographs in the direction of the children playing on the field.

Adults who were supervising the children observed this activity and immediately reported the incident to Principal Lorna Oates-Santos, who in turn notified the Ridgewood police. At this time the police are investigating the incident.

I am writing to assure you that the safety of the children is always the top priority of Ridgewood Public School officials. Any incident that might jeopardize that safety is taken very seriously and thoroughly investigated. Please do not hesitate to report any suspicious activity to your school principal, and encourage your children to do the same.

Ridgewood Planning Board continues debate on village fast food ordinance

The Ridgewood Planning Board went back for seconds on the issue of amending the village’s fast food ordinance at Tuesday’s public meeting.

Planners addressed the importance of moving beyond the negative stigma the ordinance’s name carries.

“I think we get hung up on the words ‘fast food,'” said Mayor Keith Killion.

The idea of amending the existing fast food ordinance, which currently prohibits fast food entirely in the downtown area’s B-1 zone and permits it with conditions in the B-2 zone, was revived at a board meeting in August by Village Planner Blais Brancheau with the intent that applicants currently prohibited under existing ordinance could potentially fill some of the vacant storefronts in Ridgewood’s Central Business District (CBD).

There will be some extra illumination in Ridgewood this Sunday as military families gather for a candle-lighting ceremony at Van Neste Square in honor of Gold Star Mother’s Day.

A national observance in honor of mothers and families whose sons or daughters have been killed while on duty in the United States military, Gold Star Mother’s Day takes place on the last Sunday of September each year, accompanied by a proclamation from the president.

This Sunday will mark the first time an official commemoration has been conducted in the village, something American Legion Post 53 member Bob Paoli attributes to a simple fact.

An Islamic cultural center near the site of the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center held its first exhibit Wednesday evening, the enthusiasm at the opening belying its troubled beginnings.

As a small orchestra played traditional Middle Eastern instruments, people crowded into the center, where a photo exhibit of New York children of different ethnicities lined the walls.

Sharif El-Gamal, the center’s developer, said the biggest error on the project was not involving the families of 9/11 victims from the start.

“The artificial turf fields have continued to be plagued by excessive “clean-up” costs. RHS sports programs are suffering as work continues to repair the latest storm damage from flooding. On several occasions I have called upon the BOE, as the field owner, to join with the Village, sports boasters and neighbors and see what can be done to resolve this continual cycle of flood damage, field closure and expensive repair. I am sure that intelligent, creative parties working together in good faith can devise solutions. Unfortunately, the BOE and the superintendent have ignored this offer of cooperation. Please BOE, do not miss this opportunity.
