>Gov. Christie should take own advice on violent language

COMMENTARY

This time he crossed the line.

By calling on the press to “take a bat out on” State Senator Loretta Weinberg, the Governor crossed the line of decency. Such violent language has absolutely no place in our public discourse.

Granted, the statement was uttered — actually, almost shouted — in the heat of the moment, and the Governor probably did not mean much by it. After all, he is known for making outrageous, provocative statements.

>DEA Sponsored Drug Collection Program

>DEA Sponsored Drug Collection Program
Saturday, April 30

Ridgewood residents will have an opportunity to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs during the DEA-sponsored National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, scheduled for Saturday, April 30, from 10 am to 2 pm. The collection site is the lobby outside the Police Department on the second floor of Village Hall where a clearly marked box will be placed for collecting the drugs. This program is a follow-up to the Take Back Day that was held in September, during which 25 pounds of unwanted drugs were collected in Ridgewood. Nationally, more than 120 tons of pills were collected during the September program. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.

More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to a survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. Each day, approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. “Simply flushing prescription drugs down the toilet is not a good option for disposal either,” notes Eco-Ed Schwartz, from REAC (Ridgewood’s Environmental Advisory Committee), “as trace amounts of these drugs are making it back to our waterways and drinking water.”

Ridgewood is one of several Bergen County communities that will be participating in the April 30 event. For a complete list of local collection locations, see the DEA website at www.dea.gov. If you have questions about the collection or need additional information, call the Ridgewood Police Department at 201-652-3900.

>Local students’ films selected for Ridgewood festival

>Local students’ films selected for Ridgewood festival
Wednesday, April 20, 2011
BY KAREN KLEIMANN
TOWN JOURNAL

A red carpet event in Ridgewood featuring its first film festival will include two films by local students exploring breast cancer and looking at the inner thoughts of high school students during the day, respectively.

Above, from left, Upper Saddle River residents and brothers Sean and Ryan McIlraith at the Garden State Film Festival, where their film ‘Hallways’ was officially selected. The film is among the more than 40 selected for the first Ridgewood Film Festival, which will be held on April 27 and 28.
The Ridgewood Film Festival, created by the Ridgewood Guild, is the first of its kind in the Village and had more than 60 submissions, which were narrowed down to 41 films, including directors with a few Emmys to their name, amateur filmmakers and high school students hoping to get a break into the industry.

“This festival is going to be wonderful,” Ridgewood Guild chair Tony Damiano said. “We had such an incredible response and we’re still getting submissions, and they come from all over the world.”

A nonsectarian school, The Co-op offers morning and afternoon classes for 2, 3 and 4-year-olds, as well as Kindergarten Enrichment. The seasoned, professional teaching staff guides students toward social, emotional and physical well-being. Children learn and play in an environment ideally suited to their needs as developing individuals. The program encourages independence, self-discipline and a love for school. Setting the school apart from other nursery schools, The Co-op is organized and run by parents, which enables them to actively participate in their child’s early learning experience. Music, physical education, field trips, indoor and outdoor play time and an in-house library are just a few of the experiences to which the children are exposed as supplements to the daily education plans.

>$6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker

>$6 Gas? Could Happen if Dollar Keeps Getting Weaker
Published: Wednesday, 20 Apr 2011
By: Jeff Cox
CNBC.com Staff Write

A dollar plumbing three-year lows is hitting Americans squarely in the gas tank, and one economist thinks it could drive prices as high as $6 a gallon or more by summertime under the right conditions.

With the greenback coming under increased pressure from Federal Reserve policies and investor appetite for more risk, there seems little direction but up for commodity prices, in particular energy and metals.

Weakness in the US currency feeds upward pressure on commodities, which are priced in dollars and thus come at a discount on the foreign markets.

>The fact that a drug house, with drug dealers and a gun is in our neighborhoods is VERY troubling

>The fact that a drug house, with drug dealers and a gun is in our neighborhoods is VERY troubling

Yes, the fact that a drug house, with drug dealers and a gun is in our neighborhoods is VERY troubling.

Law enforcement officers put their lives at risk every day because of this scourge. The presence of a gun puts anyone in that area at risk, a stray bullet is as deadly as any other.

The young adult girls from Ridgewood “were arrested leaving the home earlier and charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Also taken into custody were two juveniles observed making marijuana purchases at the home.”

They were not charged in relation to the gun. The thing that so many people don’t “get” is that by purchasing/using these drugs they are automatically funding people with guns. I hope this a wakeup call to all area parents that even if you “used a little pot in the 80’s”, you should be firm with your children, drug dealers with guns are what they are going to be dealing with, and fund. I hope in the school health programs when they go through the pharmacopeia of drugs, they can now take time to show pictures of a gun also – because it is intimately related to the trade.

I didn”t mean to sound soft on drugs or guns, and I do hope particularly that the 2 young adults and 2 juveniles do eventually get their lives back on track, but as I said “Justice must be served”.

But is there a tear in my eye for them and their families? Yes.

>Is there an illegal drug trade that is flourishing at RHS?

>Is there an illegal drug trade that is flourishing at RHS?

For those of us who in live in Ridgewood and with their eyes open, these arrests should come as no surprise. Yes, the dealers are very dangerous people — they were arrested with a handgun in their possession and have been through the criminal justice system already.

The seemingly innocent parties to this story — the two of age girls and the two minors — are just as culpable; they create the demand that creates the supply. There have been numerous reports for many years about the illegal drug trade that is flourishing at RHS. The transactions are generally small and, in the infinite scheme of things, of little consequence.

However (and this is meant for the parents of these student-dealers who have to know what their children are doing), once your son (or daughter) gets arrested, they will: 1. have a criminal record; 2. will probably have difficulty getting accepted to the college of their choice; 3. never be able to obtain a job in the public sector; 4. begin lifetime associations with those who ultimately will either wind up in jail or the morgue. Yes, alchohol abuse is just as bad, but it will not send you on the downward spiral as dealing, or using drugs,

>Balancing Budgets on Drivers’ Backs

>Balancing Budgets on Drivers’ Backs
By William Lajeunesse

Cities and states across the country are broke. But instead of raising taxes, lawmakers are raising traffic fines.
“This business of using fines and traffic fees as revenue sources is just flat wrong,” said Lew Uhler with the National Tax Limitation Committee. “This is simply a tax by another name.”

Nowhere is that more obvious than Los Angeles, where the city collects $1.5 million a year at a single intersection in the San Fernando Valley from drivers running a red light. Cost per ticket is $476.

>Geese Peace is looking for volunteers

>Geese Peace is looking for volunteers

Help us control the Canada Geese population in our brooks, on our fields and in our walkways.
Ridgewood volunteers are looking for nests of Canada Geese. If any resident sees either a nest, or sees one goose “patrolling” an area, which means there is a nest nearby, please contact Parks and Recreation Department: 201-670-5560 and a trained GeesePeace volunteer and partner will “check it out”. GeesePeace is a nationwide organization of humane control of Canada Geese populations.

For complete information: (www.geesepeace.org)

We have had success at reducing the Canada Geese population; we ask all residents to look around their property, especially if it is near a waterway. This is a sanctioned Village program.

>iPhone is Spy Phone

>iPhone is Spy Phone

iPhone keeps record of everywhere you go

Privacy fears raised as researchers reveal file on iPhone that stores location coordinates and timestamps of owner’s movements

Security researchers have discovered that Apple’s iPhone keeps track of where you go – and saves every detail of it to a secret file on the device which is then copied to the owner’s computer when the two are synchronised.

The file contains the latitude and longitude of the phone’s recorded coordinates along with a timestamp, meaning that anyone who stole the phone or the computer could discover details about the owner’s movements using a simple program.

For some phones, there could be almost a year’s worth of data stored, as the recording of data seems to have started with Apple’s iOS 4 update to the phone’s operating system, released in June 2010.
