JCC Thurnauer School of Music Announces Selected Students For Master Class
The JCC Thurnauer School of Music, recently named a Major Arts Institution by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, is pleased to announce the violin students selected to perform in a master class with New York Philharmonic concertmaster Glenn Dicterow on Sunday, April 10 from 2 to 5 p.m.
The class, open to anyone who would like to attend, will take place in the school’s Eric Brown Theater, located within the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades (411 East Clinton Avenue, Tenafly). The suggested donation to attend the class is $10, payable at the door.
The students (participants and honorable mention), selected by a panel of distinguished musicians and music educators, come from eight of the more than 50 municipalities in New York and New Jersey represented by the Thurnauer student body. Selected student participants are Ari Boutris (New York, N.Y.); Stephanie Xu (Closter, N.J.); Mia Park (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.); Isabel Park (Ridgewood, N.J.); Amanda Chao and Andrew Yohann Kim (Tenafly); and Lucia Nowik (Warren, N.J.). Students chosen for Honorable Mention are Emily Chen and June Lee (Closter); Rachelle Huh (Demarest, N.J.); Dylan Hamme (Leonia, N.J.); and Sanford Whatley (Tenafly).
The master class is part of the music school’s Sylvia & Jacob Handler Master Class Series, and is the third and final class of the 2010-2011 Season. In January, the school welcomed New York Philharmonic cellist Eric Bartlett, and in March Philharmonic pianist (and music school parent) Jonathan Feldman.
The master class will mark Mr. Dicterow’s second appearance with Thurnauer School of Music students this year. On February 9, he performed the “Theme from Schindler’s List” as soloist with the Thurnauer Symphony Orchestra at the music school’s 2011 Gift of Music Gala Benefit Concert at the Bergen Performing Arts Center. The evening, which featured 10 musicians from the Philharmonic including music school parents Sheryl Staples (principal associate concertmaster), Judith LeClair (principal bassoon) and Mr. Feldman, raised nearly $100,000 in support of music education at the school.

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie today fingered Democrats for a jump in the average property tax bill in 2010.
Asked if he takes responsibility for the increase at a press availability today, the governor said “absolutely not.”
The average property tax bill in 2010 was $7,576, a 4.1 percent increase over 2009 and the largest year-over-year increase since 2007. Democrats on Friday, when the state released the numbers, blamed Christie for the spike…
“If they pass all the things that I proposed, then it’s completely my responsibility. If they don’t, then they own it,” Christie said. “You can’t give me part of my solution and then expect me to be responsible if the solution doesn’t work.”
>Teen history buffs face off in tournament Saturday, March 19, 2011 BY JEAN RIMBACH THE RECORD STAFF WRITER
RIDGEWOOD — From Gore Vidal to Barbie, King George III to the Rolling Stones, teenagers from around the Garden State tested their knowledge on an eclectic array of history questions Saturday in an academic competition at Ridgewood High School.

All hands were on buzzers at the inaugural run of the New Jersey History Bee and Bowl, with some 200 students from 22 schools quizzed on topics from George Washington to Washington, D.C.
“Founder David Madden, a Ridgewood high school graduate, described the competition as “more ‘Jeopardy!’ than ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.’ ” He said some 1,000 questions were prepared for the event, ranging from the Stone Age to the Middle East, classic movies to styles of dress.”

>Appointment of Robbert O’Malley to Land use Authority calls in to question Village Managers Judgement
Ridgewood NJ – It’s scary to think that you can be indicted by a federal grand jury for fraud, then be promoted to a civic leadership post. On top of that, Mayor Gabbert aka Ridgewood Village Administrator, is okay with this. Seriously, is this the kind of decision making we want in Ridgewood? Does anyone else in Ridgewood even question these types of actions by the guy tasked to run the day to day operations of Ridgewood. Are there no more ethical boundary lines in this state?
I would hope somebody such as our mayor, or someone from the village council asks Mr Gabbert why he is comfortable supporting a person indicted on 68, yes 68 counts of fraud to a substantial decision making board?
“O’Malley, 47, was indicted in August on 68 counts of fraud and other federal crimes. Prosecutors say O’Malley falsified mortgage applications at his private business, Residential Mortgage Corp. of Ridgewood, and used improvement authority workers to confirm the falsified applications when lenders called.”
