Rep Scott Garrett Statement on Obama’s Unconstitutional Amnesty
Nov 20, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), founder and Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, issued the following statement after President Obama announced that he would violate his oath to uphold the Constitution and grant approximately 5 million illegal immigrants work permits:

“After repeated admissions that the Constitution precludes him from granting amnesty, President Obama has chosen to cast aside his oath to uphold the supreme law of the land and is going to grant amnesty anyway.  The president’s frustration with Congress, as the Washington Post’s editorial board noted, ‘doesn’t grant the president license to tear up the Constitution.’  No provision of the Constitution grants the president the power to change the law simply because the president disagrees with Congress.  This sets a fatal precedent – is there no longer any limit to a president’s power?

“Today, President Obama has also turned his back on American workers and law-abiding immigrants.  At a time when American workers are desperate for jobs, the president has decided to unfairly reward those who have blatantly broken the law with blanket amnesty and work permits, allowing them to directly compete with American workers for jobs that are hard to find already.  I am committed to undoing the damage this unconstitutional action will have on our republic.”

BACKGROUND:  As the New York Times’ Michael Shear pointed out, President Obama has already explained why he cannot do this:

In a Telemundo interview in September 2013, Mr. Obama said he was proud of having protected the “Dreamers” — people who came to the United States illegally as young children — from deportation. But he also said that he could not apply that same action to other groups of people.

“If we start broadening that, then essentially I’ll be ignoring the law in a way that I think would be very difficult to defend legally,” Mr. Obama told Jose Diaz-Balart in the interview. “So that’s not an option.”

During a news conference in Australia, he said that his earlier answers about the limits of his executive authority were prompted by people who asked him whether he could enact, by fiat, a bipartisan immigration bill that had passed the Senate, which would have provided a path to legalization for more of the 11 million unauthorized immigrants here.

“Getting a comprehensive deal of the sort that is in the Senate legislation, for example, does extend beyond my legal authorities,” Mr. Obama said Sunday. “There are certain things I cannot do.”

The president was pressed on that very issue during a Google Hangout in February 2013. An activist asked whether he could do more to keep families from being “broken apart” while Congress remained gridlocked on immigration legislation.

“This is something that I have struggled with throughout my presidency,” Mr. Obama said. “The problem is, is that I’m the president of the United States, I’m not the emperor of the United States. My job is to execute laws that are passed.”

RIDGEWOOD — The village will start the search for a new chief financial officer.

Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said officials have “decided not to renew Steve Sanzari’s contract as CFO.”

However, Sanzari will retain his position as the village’s treasurer, Sonenfeld said.

Ridgewood’s next CFO will also be responsible for overseeing the village’s Parking Authority, Sonenfeld added.

Sanzari will continue to earn a base salary of $110,197.61 as treasurer. He had received a $5,000 stipend as CFO — a post that will end Jan. 1. The village is open to negotiate the salary for the next CFO, Sonenfeld said.

The village manager appointed herself the Parking Authority’s head after first assuming the office last spring.

Le Bon Choix Rotisserie and Cafe : Where chicken rules the roost

By Teresa Politano | The Star-Ledger

The bread is from Balthazar, the chicken is from Goffle Road Poultry Farm in Wyckoff and the most popular topper is a fried egg.

Le Bon Choix is an homage, really, to the chicken, and it represents another unique restaurant addition to the village of Ridgewood, which is rapidly laying claim as one of New Jersey’s most distinctive foodie destinations.

On the menu? Rotisserie chicken, served with corn bread and sides (including butternut squash, potato au gratin, mac and cheese, and collard greens). Plus chicken sandwiches, such as the Lyon, which is chicken topped with white bean purée and
field greens, or the Cote du Rhone, which is rotisserie chicken in an espresso barbecue sauce, with Gruyère and coleslaw.

Or skip the chicken for the gussied-up grilled cheese, with Gruyère, Parmesan and goat cheese. And yes, a burger graces the menu.

It’s a French-inspired restaurant with Southern influences, says owner Ahmed Soliman.

The restaurant’s popularity (expect a line for weekend brunch) rests on its philosophy: Start with great ingredients, keep it simple. That, plus a casual atmosphere and the rooster cookies that are popular with the kids and on Instagram.

Le Bon Choix is also a gluten-free haven, says Soliman, who offers gluten-free bread for sandwiches, gluten-free French toast for brunch and a few homemade gluten-free options for dessert.

It took Soliman two years to secure a space in Ridgewood — it’s tough to get in, but it’s a terrific location for a restaurant.

“Crafts in Ridgewood,” to be held at the Unitarian Society next weekend, shows off a wealth of talent, a creative approach to life and perhaps, even the key to eternal youth. Okay, so not eternal; but who wants that anyway?

Among local artists is Doug Goodell, a photographer of birds and an author of a book about his trips searching for and catching those birds in his lens. Meridith Aderhold is a maker of jewelry.

Peter Goldberg’s skill is to re-purpose glass; he uses melted glass to fashion new objects. Steve Riskind likes to take his camera to industrial sites, capturing them in stark black and white.

Charles Saulenos creates bowls from burls. “Beautiful” says Bernie Spitz.

Bernie Spitz, a potter, started the Craft Show 23 years ago and has been at every one of those shows. He claims happily, “I’m a retired Navy man (three years as a Signalman USS Heron – 2nd class petty officer), I’m 89 and still making pots!”

Spitz, who retired in 1990 from Pfizer, went over to the Wortendyke Studio in Midland Park one day, became fascinated with pottery. “I took an interest in it and found I loved it!” he says. “I took workshops and classes with well known potters. I learned how to throw a pot there and eventually taught there.” He adds, “It’s mostly keeping at it and finding my own voice.” “Finding my own hand,” Marcia, his wife of 62 years, corrects him. .

Flowers and landscapes in fall and spring are featured in watercolorist Vi Shipley’s exhibit at the West Side Presbyterian Church gallery this month.

Landscapes for this show were painted in Bergen and Passaic counties and the flowers plein aire in her garden.

“I’ve hung some of my favorite pieces,” said Shipley. In choosing flowers to paint, she is attracted to good form and shape of the blooms. Her garden is filled with lilies and Rose of Sharon. On display are: “My Garden,” “Spring Iris,” “Orchid,” “Summer Florals,” “Trumpet Lilies,” “Stargazers,” “Peony,” “Day Lily,” “Autumn Bouquet” and “Delphinium.”

Lovely local scenes include: “Willows,” “Heading South,” “Pine Tree at Sunrise,” “Birches,” and “Dogwood in Spring.”

In choosing a scene to paint she explains, “I like water, for the reflection. It makes for a more interesting painting.” She calls watercolor more spontaneous than oils – “I like the color you get with watercolor.”

Ridgewood dad Dave Slomin is an indie rocker

To a cub scout in Pack 44 at Ridge School, Dave Slomin is the leader who introduced him to the pleasure and potential of rocks, as in climbing and hiking; as in adventure. To members of the audience in a New York City club, like Mercury Lounge for instance, Dave Slomin is the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for the indie rock band, Waiting for Henry, who introduced them to Americana/Rock. Same guy. Difference is night and day.

RIDGEWOOD — The village’s Emergency Medical Services division has acquired a new ambulance, officials said.

The ambulance is a 2015 Ford F-450 4WD chassis, and will cost the village $184,266, officials said.

Ridgewood owns three ambulances, including its newest rig.

The village traded in an older ambulance — a 2000 Ford E-450 chassis — as part of its latest purchase.

“Extensive research was performed by our Emergency Services Department to decide upon the type of ambulance that would best suit our needs,” said Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld.

Michael Latour at Latour in Ridgewood on his favorite local restaurant and favorite knives

NOVEMBER 5, 2014    LAST UPDATED: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2014, 1:21 AM
THE RECORD

Michael Latour, 51, was no stranger to high-end cooking even before he opened Latour in Ridgewood in 1998 — the Ramsey resident had cooked at the Jockey Club at the Ritz Carlton, the Four Seasons Hotel, the Doral Park Avenue Hotel (all in New York City) and L’Auberge de France in Wayne before opening his own place. Latour, a French-American restaurant, received three out of four stars from The Record in 2010, when it was last reviewed.

Although he has a degree in culinary arts from Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island, Latour says it was his on-the-job experience that was most valuable — in cooking, he says, everything is based on interpretation, and learning from others is critical to create one’s own style.

Here, Latour talks about convection ovens, his (negative) feelings for tilapia and his favorite local restaurant.

Water meter conversion project in Ridgewood almost complete

The village expects to complete its water meter upgrade program in the next six months.

File Photo
Ridgewood’s conversion to radio water meters, which are believed to result in more accurate billing, should be completed in the next six months.

The water utility has been working for years to convert its 20,000 customers – including ratepayers in the village, Glen Rock, Midland Park and Wyckoff – to radio meters, which officials said would result in more accurate billing for customers.

According to Ridgewood Water, the new meters will make it possible to “quickly and efficiently” collect meter readings without entering the property or connecting to telephone circuits, a process that was causing major swings in usage estimates.

Ridgewood Water has contracted with Lenegan Plumbing and Heating for the conversion.

In July, the Village Council voted to accelerate the program, which Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said would have taken up to three more years to complete.

However, in the process of conversion, some customers received a tidal wave of usage fees in their first billing following the upgrade as previous bills had likely been underestimated..

Sandy Aid should go to Victims and not Special interests

Ridgewood NJ, No opportunity squandered . With help of the local media NJ politicians have waged a carefully orchestrated plot to capture as much cash as possible form the federal government in the form of Hurricane Sandy Aid.  Sandy Aid is viewed as a treasure chest of goodie for politicians to hand out to their favorite sponsors .

Sounding almost jealous on Monday New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said that Gov. Chris Christie might have “prayed” for Superstorm Sandy, because it has provided cover for what Sweeney said are the governor’s failed economic policies.

And after all failed policies over the last 3 decades have left New Jersey with little more than hope for handouts to get this economic basket case of an economy going . The New Jersey legislator with help from their colleagues  in the media recently wasted over 3 months pushing  a bill that would have  forced dogs to wear seat belts while New Jersey suffered the worst recession since the 1930′s.

We are told the New Jersey’s economic growth in 2013 hinges to an unprecedented extent on what the federal government does — or doesn’t — do. It isn’t just a question of whether Congress eventually authorizes the full $60 billion in Hurricane Sandy relief, economists and tax experts agree . (
https://www.northjersey.com/news/Sandy_recovery_is_top_priority_for_Christie.html )

No wounder Governor Christie after what seemed like a romantic walk on the beach with President Obama  has nothing but hostility for house Republicans who had the nerve to assume  that Hurricane Sandy Aid  should actually only go to the victims of the hurricane .

We are told that Sandy recovery is top priority for Christie, once again referring to the “need to get miles of debilitated boardwalk repaired. Thousands of devastated homes and shuttered businesses reopened. Destroyed bridges, highways, pipelines, rail cars and even amusement parks replaced.” (https://www.northjersey.com/news/Sandy_recovery_is_top_priority_for_Christie.html )  I am wondering if Christie can explain why having $154 million in the hurricane-relief fund for Alaskan fisheries? or how $2 million for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC to nake just a few is going to help rebuild the boardwalk in Seaside Heights ?

Why Christie is fighting with Congress and his own party to help pay for it supported by New Jersey ‘s media like the Ledger’s Tom Moran who published a scathing column today on Republican Congressman Scott Garrett, who cast the lone vote in the New Jersey delegation against the fiscal cliff compromise ,that raised taxes on almost everyone in New Jersey .

Congressman Scott Garrett is seen as the prime obstacle for lobbyist want to get there hands on your money. (https://addins.njherald.com/blogs/insidepolitics/2013/01/star-ledger-columnist-hammers-scott-garrett ) .

Moran seems to be in favor of the rumored back room deal between Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn and NJ Legislature Kevin O’Tool  to oust Garrett and bring home the beacon by forcing a primary challenge .

The problem for the pro-lobbyist is that Garrett pushed through fully funding the National Flood Insurance Program which pays homeowner claims that where actually caused by Hurricane Sandy . ( https://theridgewoodblog.net/garrett-takes-the-lead-on-flood-aid-for-sandy-relief/ )

Clearly the victims of Sandy have not gotten their money because the priority has been given to lobbyist who politicians deal with everyday and not to voters who most politicians only deal with once every four years.

Ridgewood adds an extra hour to parking meters

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

Shoppers and diners will now have an extra hour of parking in Ridgewood.

The Village Council voted on Wednesday to convert all of Ridgewood’s two-hour meters to three-hour meters.

Business leaders have advocated for the change, noting that the switch will give customers more time to leisurely shop and dine without worrying about a parking ticket.

Some concerns about the three-hour limit were previously raised by Councilwoman Susan Knudsen, who argued that four hours was more leisurely. The council ultimately settled on three hours, citing varied reasoning, including the fear that four-hour meters would entice part-time workers to use those spots rather than shoppers.

“It’s never going to be perfect,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn said, noting that the meter time could be changed again. “We’ll have to monitor the situation.”

This plan to convert two-hour meters to three-hour meters comes in tandem with a larger discussion about short-term parking solutions. These solutions being discussed would serve as a temporary balm to Ridgewood’s parking woes while the village explores its long-term options, including a proposed county-funded garage (see story on page A1).

RIDGEWOOD — A move to upgrade thousands of water meters throughout the village has been a shock for some business owners and residents who have received larger-than-expected bills.

Some residents have received water bills that are thousands of dollars higher than they’ve been used to paying. A number of businesses have paid hundreds of dollars more for their water.

The bigger bills, officials said, are the result of accurate readings on actual use. In recent years, estimated water and sewer discharge bills were based on predicted or past use.

The village has stepped up efforts the past month to replace all of the water meters in Ridgewood, according to officials.

Meters that were installed several years ago have since become obsolete, requiring installation of so-called radio-read meters.

The updated meters emit low-level radio frequencies, easily detectable using specialized hand-held instruments; such meters eliminate the need for readers to enter homes or businesses.
