Rep. Scott Garrett calls new Hudson River train tunnel vital
OCTOBER 23, 2014, 11:35 PM LAST UPDATED: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2014, 11:42 PM BY HERB JACKSON WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT | THE RECORD
Rep. Scott Garrett said Thursday that a new train tunnel should be built under the Hudson River “sooner rather than later” because the potential closing of one or both of the existing tunnels owned by Amtrak “would be a nightmare.”
But Garrett, in a meeting with the editorial board of The Record, said leaders in New Jersey and New York should reach an agreement first on what share of the cost they would bear if they want Washington to become involved.

* Florida-based Interim
now has 8 N.J. locations
Interim HealthCare Inc., a Florida-based national network of home care, hospice and health staffing franchises, said Tuesday that it added 15 locations across the U.S. in 2014, including one in Ridgewood. It is the company’s first location in Bergen County and is expected to open at the end of this month.
The Ridgewood location is Interim’s eighth in the Garden State. The others are in Union City, Hamilton, South Plainfield, Union, Toms River, Point Pleasant and Voorhees, according to the company’s website.
The Ridgewood location will serve clients in Bergen County. Elise Merhige, president of Interim HealthCare in Ridgewood, said Wednesday there are about five employees at that location. The business plans to bring in more people in the coming weeks and is currently hiring home health aides and companions for seniors, she said.
According to Interim HealthCare President and Chief Executive Officer Kathleen Gilmartin, the company pursued this year’s expansion to meet a growing demand for home health care.
“As baby boomers age and home care is the most affordable option for senior Americans as well as people with conditions requiring ongoing medical care, the demand for quality home health care will only continue to rise,” Gilmartin said in a news release.
Habernickel horse barn renovation scrapped for now – prefab building maybe October 22,2014 Boyd A. Loving 12:45 AM
Ridgewood NJ, Based on the recommendation of Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld, Village Council members have seemingly nixed plans to undertake an expensive renovation of the Irene Habernickel Family Park’s horse barn. The renovation project was being considered to satisfy a need for permanent restrooms and shelter from inclement weather at the expansive park located on Hillcrest Road.
Sonenfeld suggested that a prefabricated restroom may be a less expensive alternative, with preliminary estimates in the $60K – $90K price range. A $60K grant may help offset costs.
Many of you may remember that the restroom project at Vets Field wound up costing taxpayers almost $400K, and those commodes were constructed in an existing building.

The menu: mostly pizza. The setting: tiny. The phone: often ignored. The wait for a table: sometimes an hour.
And no wonder: Ridgewood newcomer S. Egidio is a local novelty, an Italian restaurant run by a newly arrived Italian chef with food that is both authentic and creative.
Its menu is simple: Italian cured meat, imported cheeses, salads, a few appetizers, and Neapolitan pizzas that are blasted for a minute in a 1,000-degree oven until blistered and bubbling. Occasionally, there are pasta specials; sandwiches are served at lunch.

Ridgewood Girls Cross-Country impressive at Shore Coaches Invitational

The Ridgewood News
Each year, for preparation purposes, the Ridgewood High School girls cross-country team enters the Shore Coaches Invitational on the first Saturday in October.
The Maroons’ main goal is to log some miles on the Holmdel Park course that hosts state-championship meets at season’s end. The Invitational also affords them an early opportunity to see where they stack up against statewide competition.
The verdict from Saturday’s Shore championship division race? RHS is in a short stack.
Led by junior Sam Halvorsen and senior Carleen Jeffers, Ridgewood averaged 20:17 per runner and finished second to Red Bank Catholic, 50-71, while holding off Princeton (72 points) and West Windsor-Plainsboro South (73).
“We had a great day,” Maroon coach Jacob Brown commented on his website. He added that “171 schools entered the seven varsity races, and 124 finished with team scores. We were second overall on a time basis.”

Valley Hospital’s suit over rejected expansion plan could prove costly for Ridgewood
OCTOBER 10, 2014 LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2014, 1:21 AM BY MARY JO LAYTON STAFF WRITER THE RECORD
The Valley Hospital’s lawsuit against the Ridgewood Planning Board and Village Council is sparking fears of a costly, protracted legal battle and even some talk of a boycott of the hospital and its physicians.
The hospital, whose proposal to nearly double in size was rejected by the Planning Board in June, has turned to the courts to push the expansion through.
Mayor Paul Aronsohn said the board’s decision should stand. As a member of the Planning Board, he voted against the proposal to change the village master plan to allow the project.
“I fear this lawsuit will not only be divisive, but also expensive,” Aronsohn said Thursday. “By forcing the village to spend scarce tax dollars on a legal defense, this lawsuit runs the risk of undermining important village services and programs.”

Ridgewood NJ, The immediate area surrounding Spring and Van Dien Avenues in Ridgewood was flooded with water on Monday morning (10/06 @ 0945 hours) following an accident in which a HoHoKus driver struck a fire hydrant with his SUV. Ridgewood PD, FD, and EMS units all responded to the scene. The driver was uninjured, but his vehicle was towed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. The broken hydrant triggered a major water main break; personnel from Ridgewood Water and Ridgewood firefighters struggled with a shutoff valve for more than an hour to bring the leak under control. Representatives from PSE&G were called to the scene when firefighters detected a strong smell of natural gas in the area. Four (4) nearby homes were temporarily evacuated while emergency crews checked for any signs of accumulated gas. The intersection of Spring and Van Dien Avenues will remain closed indefinitely while crews repair the leak(s).

RIDGEWOOD — Village officials unveiled several parking proposals they hope will attract visitors to the downtown business district and also ease parking for residents.
One proposal offered at Wednesday’s council meeting would standardize parking hours, fees and durations throughout the village.
“All downtown meters would run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” according to the proposal, altering the current 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. range.
Also, all downtown meters would offer three- or four-hour parking, as opposed to the current limit of two hours.
“All downtown meters will cost 25 cents per half-hour,” the proposal states, adding existing 15-minute parking spaces would remain.
“This will make parking easier and simpler for shoppers and diners, enhancing the overall downtown experience,” according to the plan.
Another proposal seeks to restrict long-term parking passes — currently sold to residents and non-residents on an annual basis — to Ridgewood residents only. At present, about 120 out-of-town commuters pay the same amount as residents for long-term parking passes, Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said. An alternative proposal would have non-residents pay twice as much for the long-term pass.
“There is a parking scarcity in this town,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn said at the council’s meeting Wednesday, adding it has taken out-of-the-box thinking to determine ways of improving it.
The issue of parking in Ridgewood has been front and center in recent weeks at public forums organized by Deputy Mayor Al Pucciarelli. At these gatherings, residents and business owners have keyed in on parking as the village’s biggest hindrance.
Parlance Chamber Concerts brings world-class musicians to Ridgewood

Editor’s Note – Michael Parloff, former longtime first flute at the Metropolitan Opera House, will open his very popular Parlance Chamber Concert Season this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at West Side Presbyterian Church. Here he offers us some background on the music and the musicians.
The concert will feature an extraordinary international ensemble. I am delighted to introduce the Minnesota Orchestra’s celebrated concertmaster, violinist Erin Keefe, and esteemed music director, Finnish clarinetist Osmo Vanska, to our audience. They will be joined by the Swiss-born pianist Gilles Vonsattel, the fiery French violinist Arnaud Sussman, the elegant violist Hsin-Yun Huang, and the Metropolitan Opera’s dashing principal cellist Rafael Figueroa.
These six remarkable artists will collaborate on three of the most beloved masterpieces of the chamber repertoire, Mozart’s E-minor violin sonata, Bartók’s Contrasts for clarinet, violin, and piano, and Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor.

Ridgewood’s Valley Hospital sues over rejection of expansion project
OCTOBER 3, 2014, 11:53 PM LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2014, 11:56 PM BY MARY JO LAYTON STAFF WRITER THE RECORD
The Valley Hospital filed suit Friday against the Ridgewood Planning Board for rejecting its proposal to nearly double in size, arguing the board illegally sided with neighborhood opponents rather than permitting an upgrade for “an inherently beneficial regional hospital.”
For Valley, the lawsuit filed in state Superior Court in Hackensack is an attempt to end a protracted and costly stalemate with the village — its expansion plans have been defeated two times in the last four years.
