THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — Week after week for years, Roger Wiegand would stand at the lectern in Village Hall with arms folded to address the council. But the voice at the podium made his final comments to Ridgewood’s governing body last fall, after which he soon took ill. Wiegand, a lifelong resident, died in April. And since his death, the council has been considering ways to honor him.

Now, along with members of Wiegand’s family, village officials will gather tonight in the council chambers for a brief reception honoring his memory.

The Village Council also plans to name a portion of South Irving Street “Wiegand Way.”

During the event at 5:30, the speaker’s lectern — Wiegand’s platform — will be affixed with a plaque honoring the outspoken resident.

Ridgewood soliciting ideas for redevelopment area

The future of North Walnut Street is in the hands of a developer, but don’t count on getting any clues from a fortune teller about what’s to be built.

“Carnival enterprises, such as palmistry, phrenology, astrology and the like” are just some of the businesses banned from the Central Business District, according to the Request for Proposals and Qualifications (RFP) for the redevelopment of the North Walnut Street area published last month.

Drive-through windows, car sales lots and auto repair shops are also on the “prohibited” list in the 42-page document that will guide the look and substance of the 2.07 acres to be redeveloped.

On Oct. 8, the village will hold a meeting where RFP responders can ask questions or make comments about the document. Plans must be submitted by Dec. 1. By Feb. 4, concepts will be presented to the Village Council, which will choose one, if any, of the firms in March.

The rest of the timeline, like acquiring vacant property and beginning construction, is “to be determined.”

Young artists go to camp in Ridgewood

“It is exciting to see the progress the young students make within one week at art camp,” said instructor Laura Paray.

The oil painting summer session was held at the Ridgewood Art Institute’s East Studio the week of Aug. 18 to 22. This is the third summer that Paray has taught an oil painting summer session at Ridgewood Art Institute. The students paint from still life and from landscapes previously created en plein air.

“There is no better way to learn than from real life set ups, the three dimensional objects are there and the goal is to convey that on a two dimensional surface,” said Paray.

“The landscape sketches help them to see the colors used to create atmosphere in an outdoor scene, and eventually they can attempt to paint outdoors themselves using the information that is given – helping them to translate the complicated outdoors into an understanding of color and value and the reasoning behind the prismatic palette of the Ridgewood Art Institute.”

Paray teaches oil painting for young people on Sundays 12 to 2 p.m. during the year.

‘Micro site’ antennas proposed to close cellphone coverage gaps in Ridgewood

‘Micro site’ antennas proposed to close cellphone coverage gaps in Ridgewood

AUGUST 28, 2014    LAST UPDATED: THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2014, 1:57 PM
BY JODI WEINBERGER

A radio frequency engineer for Verizon Wireless said a gap in data coverage affects more than 4,000 people in the village.

The telecommunications company is asking for a use and height variance from the Zoning Board of Adjustment to build a “micro site” antenna on the top of the steeple at the West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 S. Monroe St., said engineer Glenn Pierson.

The antenna, which is not permitted in a residential zone, would bring the total height of the building to 83 feet where 30 feet is permitted by law. The building is at an existing height of 81 feet.

Pierson said the antenna would provide relief for about 700 people, but if the village approves the plan, Verizon would propose other micro sites to “start chipping away at the coverage gap.”

The 2-foot antenna is being proposed in response to negative reaction from the big “macro site” cell towers seen around the state, Pierson said.

“It’s a start, a first step,” Pierson said. “We want to see how Ridgewood reacts to this type of design versus a 100-foot tower.”

He said the topography of Ridgewood creates a “significant gap” in coverage in the area north of West Ridgewood Avenue on North Monroe Street, Beachwood Road, Monte Vista Avenue, Sheridan Terrace and other roadways. The coverage, however, would not reach West Glen Avenue.

Chef John Benjamin of Park West Tavern in Ridgewood on his favorite kitchen tool and least favorite diner requests

Chef John Benjamin of Park West Tavern in Ridgewood on his favorite kitchen tool and least favorite diner requests

AUGUST 27, 2014    LAST UPDATED: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 2014, 1:21 AM
THE RECORD

After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, John Benjamin worked at some highly venerated restaurants, including Aureole in Manhattan and The French Laundry in California’s Napa Valley. And before he was named executive chef for the Park West Tavern this past December, the soft-spoken 45-year-old Greenwood Lake resident worked as executive chef for eight years at one of New Jersey’s most formal and acclaimed dining establishments, Restaurant Latour at the Crystal Springs Resort in Hardyston. Last month, Park West Tavern received three out of four stars from The Record.

Favorite kitchen tool: Japanese mandolin. It’s good for slicing garlic, potatoes, mushroom, onions very thin. And the Japanese one is plastic, thin and not too expensive – maybe $23. It fits in any kitchen cabinet.

Dish I’m most proud of: Right now we are offering a simple salad of watermelon, heirloom tomatoes and burrata cheese, with a spicy red-wine vinaigrette for $12. I like it ’cause it’s nice and refreshing; it’s light and cool.

What diners don’t know about chefs: The long hours they work —10 in the morning to midnight for me; the dedication we have for the craft we have; the stress.

What irks me most about diners: They want to create their own entrée. Someone will say, “I don’t want the pork in the pappardelle pasta.” But it has pork in it for a reason.

Girls Soccer: Ridgewood does ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in memory of coach Jack Elwood

High school athletes throughout New Jersey are taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. But the cause has a special meaning for Ridgewood.

The Ridgewood High School girls soccer team took the challenge recently in memory of their former coach, Jack Elwood. Elwood, who coached the team for 15 years, died of ALS in 2010. He donated his body to science and took part in a longitudinal study at Columbia University to help find a curse for the disease.

The team challenged the rest of the Big North girls soccer teams to take the challenge, as well as the Ridgewood boys soccer team.

“Jack was one of the most courageous and inspirational people I have ever known. Jack chose to life his life fully,” Ridgewood coach Jeff Yearing said in the video. “Today we’re trying to live up to Jack’s standard and hopefully this helps. …Jack, we remember you. We do this for you, my friend.”

The crowd knew they were Treble when they walked in.

At the finale to the Kasschau Shell’s summer concert series there was a crowd of about 200 people, all waiting to be serenaded by Treble, a cover band comprised mostly of Ridgewood residents.

Even as the audience members basked in the special opportunity to listen to music and, for some, picnic under the stars, the night was especially special for Treble’s five founding members.

And why wouldn’t it be?

They have all spent the past two years making time in their busy work and parenting schedules to take a chance on doing what they love.

“It’s really been very satisfying and fulfilling to rediscover my passion for music and reconnect with five or six other adults that are sort of on the same journey of rediscovery,” said founder Jerry Charles (bass and vocals).

Treble, according to Charles, started through his casual conversations with other Ridgewood school district parents with shared interests, who would play “for fun” at his house.

Ridgewood sets guidelines for valet parking

AUGUST 22, 2014    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2014, 12:31 AM
BY LAURA HERZOG
STAFF WRITER

The Village Council approved two ordinances last week that officials hope will have a positive impact on the Central Business District (CBD) and customer experience.

One ordinance establishes rules for restaurant valet parking. The other is an amendment to an existing ordinance on site plan procedural requirements, which the village manager hopes will speed up the process of building approval for business owners, as well as homeowners, who are doing minor work.

In the case of the valet parking ordinance, the village manager was pushing for a speedy approval; valet parking is already being done in the CBD by Roots Steakhouse. The new high-end eating establishment on Chestnut Street valet parks at some of its other area locations.

The new ordinance, which allows valet parking operators to “utilize the streets and public parking lots of the village… for performance of their services,” lists detailed operating requirements.

Among them, valet parking operators will need to buy an annual permit and show a valid insurance certificate.

Part of the push for the valet parking ordinance is related to the village’s parking woes. The village’s resolution notes that valet parking is being permitted to “help alleviate and minimize parking congestion.”

AUGUST 15, 2014    LAST UPDATED: FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 2014, 12:31 AM

Few believed a pedestrian plaza in Times Square would work, let alone become a permanent fixture in the middle of New York City’s Crossroads of the World. Both happened

In 2008, the American Planning Association bestowed its Great Public Spaces honor to the Church Street Marketplace in Burlington, Vt. There, pedestrians freely walk on store-lined Church Street in an outdoor mall setting.

Newspapers rip Michelle O’s ‘cupcake cops’

Wax Museum Hosts Birthday Party For Barack Obama

Newspapers rip Michelle O’s ‘cupcake cops’
August 18, 2014
Kyle Olson

PITTSBURGH – There’s been little support for Michelle Obama’s regulations targeting school snacks, except from bobble-headed bureaucrats. Now the media is turning against them, too.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review opines in an editorial titled ‘Cupcake cops’:

Arrogant federal overreach dips to a new low with rules that threaten a time-honored tradition — school bake sales that provide sweet treats for students and ease taxpayer burdens by helping to pay for sports, cheerleading, band and other activities.

“Such micromanagement of community life is in keeping with the ‘government knows best’ agenda behind federal diktats on toilets’ water consumption and what light bulbs can and can’t be sold. Hopefully, bake sales are where Americans will draw a line — by telling government ‘hands off!’ when it comes to cookies and cupcakes that both sweeten and enrich the educational experience,” the paper concludes.
