Ridgewood NJ, Seven athletes from Taekwondo All In, a school in downtown Ridgewood dedicated to teaching the Korean martial art, recently traveled to Oregon to compete in the Pan American Open, a tournament that drew over 1500 participants from more than 30 countries. The All In athletes’ results were striking: Nine Gold medals and three Silver, twelve medals in all. Moreover, every member of the All In team earned at least one gold medal.
The results are especially impressive considering the competitive field present at the Pan American Open. The Tournament is a designated path for athletes to ultimately qualify for the Summer Olympics. Of the participants, only twenty percent received any medal.
The details of the athletes’ outcomes are as follows:
• Brandon Jinu Son – Gold in sparring and Silver in forms. Son continued his undefeated career sparring record.
• Jongyun Tony An – Gold in forms and Silver sparring. An’s demonstrated his prowess in the forms segment.
• Jihoon David Ahn – Gold in both sparring and forms. This was Ahn’s first major tournament. He dominated his age group. In sparring, he captured the gold medal with an acrobatic jump back kick.
• Jiho Jason Ahn – Gold in sparring and Silver in forms. Ahn easily defeated his sparring opponents with well-devised strategies.
• Suyeon Louis Kim – Gold medal in forms. Kim demonstrated grace and precision to capture her first gold medal at a major tournament.
• Yeonjae Lee – Gold in forms. This was Yeonjae Lee’s first tournament. He fought through a very competitive group to earn a gold medal.
• Yeongyu Lee – Gold in both sparring and forms. It was also Yeongyu Lee’s first tournament. He came through in the final rounds to outpace his competitors.
Youngmin Kim, the head coach and owner of Taekowndo All In, commented, “I would like to congratulate our team for their stellar results. It is very difficult to perform at the premier level, and this year’s competition was fierce. Our athletes came through adversity with superb energy, discipline and grit.” He also noted, “I want to thank the parents of All In students for entrusting us with their children. It is a true privilege.”
Having successes at tournaments is nothing new for Taekowndo All In. Just a month ago, the All In athletes had a strong showing at a New Jersey statewide tournament, earning 47 medals. Also, earlier this year, they made impressive strides at the U.S. Nationals.
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art with a rich tradition of teaching self defense, mental discipline, and respect. The sport has been a part of the Summer Olympics since 2000. Taekwondo All In, located at 33 Chestnut Street in Ridgewood, was founded in 2012 by Youngmin Kim, a Taekwondo master and former scholarship recipient and professional athlete in the sport. Siobhan Winograd graduated from Lafayette College in 1995 with a degree in Engineering. After graduation, she began working at Tiffany & Co., where she ultimately became Director of Engineering and New Product Development. She stayed at Tiffany & Co. for 9 years, helping to introduce and manufacture some of the company’s most popular and intricate designs and products. While at Tiffany & Co., Siobhan also earned her M.B.A. from Fordham University Business School. Her last day at Tiffany & Co. was March 11, 2004, the day her son, Liam, was born. She has been a stay-at-home mom ever since.
After her daughter, Chloe, was born in 2006, Siobhan began to think about some of the professional aspects of her life that she had left behind, as well as how few opportunities there are in the workplace for women who want to be the primary caregivers for their children, yet still develop their professional lives. That led her to start Womily — a combination of women, work and family. The signature line started with an idea she named “Touch.” It is the translation of a fingerprint into a piece of gold or sterling silver that can be worn as a charm, pendant or cufflink. The name was meant to signify that the fingerprint represents someone who has “touched” your life.
Now in its fifth year, Womily products are available online at www.Womily.com and at select boutiques. www.Womily.com
Ridgewood NJ, Since the Ridgewood blog had come up more than once in the last few civility meetings Mayor Aronsohn and Jan Philips reached out to us for an invite so we updated our Last Will and Testaments and graciously accepted .The meetings of the Civility Round Table are held on Tuesday’s, once a month at 7:30 PM in the Ridgewood Village Hall Senior’s Lounge. Residents are encouraged to attend .
The meeting started promptly at 7:30 and was to my mind well attended given the time of the year . Jan Phelps hosted the meeting , with Mayor Aronsohn and Councilwomen Hauck . Everyone introduced themselves representing various groups and organizations in the Village , from the BOE , the Planing Board , the Ridgewood Library ,several local clergy , the HSA’s , RBSA and may other fine organizations that serve Ridgewood as well as a few residents . The purpose as stated by the Mayor is to create a more civil discourse in the Village .
Civility is about more than just politeness, although politeness is a necessary first step. It is about disagreeing without disrespect, seeking common ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same. Civility is the hard work of staying present even with those with whom we have deep-rooted and fierce disagreements. It is political in the sense that it is a necessary prerequisite for civic action. But it is political, too, in the sense that it is about negotiating interpersonal power such that everyone’s voice is heard, and nobody’s is ignored. https://www.instituteforcivility.org/who-we-are/what-is-civility/
The group seemed to agree that Ridgewood is a town where people like to excel , and that drive and those expectations create a very passionate , as you can see from blog comments and opinionated populace . People care about their community and thats a good thing , but many felt that sometimes we all go a bit to far .
We looked at the causes of incivility , the when and why .Sheila Brogan long time BOE member , felt that todays parents had a lot of additional pressure and worried that in todays world their kids would have a hard time doing as well as they have done . She went on to speak about the changing times and how one could expect to have several careers over a life time ,all this she though made being a parent a lot harder than it was in the past and a lot more pressure .
We managed to go till 8:08 be for someone mentioned the elephant in the room, “I want to talk about the blog”…….
I learned a lot , mostly that I am glad I can sit in my PJ’s drinking coffee writing a blog getting yelled at by anonymous commenters ,and don’t have a tuff job like the RBSA people who are pulled in many directions ,by so many demands all at once .
There were interestingly a surprising large amount of blog enthusiasts there some open and some secret admirers .
While I could see there were some sore spots , like turf fields , PSEG ,sports issues , Valley Hospital , the Village Hall renovation and alas Marty Brooks the daggers were lowered for the night .
While anonymity of blog posters took a hit as expected some pointed out that even on facebook were you know who everyone is the comments can be even nastier . A resident put it down to a type of “keyboard bravado.”

CBD Retail’s new rules for 2015: It’s all about being connected

THE RECORD
* Stores must confront change from tech to real estate
This year, retailers are learning to play by a new set of rules.
Retailers are entering 2015 by confronting the most sweeping changes in the last 100 years. That was the consensus as a record number of retail executives gathered last week in New York City for the 104th meeting of the National Retail Federation.
It’s not just the steep increases in online shopping that they must respond to, but the shifts in how consumers connect with sellers through mobile phones, tablets and Wi-Fi-enabled devices in stores are causing retailers to rethink their business models. Today, building a state-of-the-art mobile application to ease instant transactions via smartphone is seen as a wiser investment than spending millions on a new store.
At the four-day retail convention, five new retail realities emerged from the thousands of hours of panel discussions, keynote addresses and informal meetings on the exhibit floor. Here are the new rules for 2015:
You need fans more than you need customers
It is telling that this year’s retail think-tank began with five sports executives — from the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, and the Women’s Tennis Association, and two presidents of a National Football League team and a German soccer club — talking about the lessons retailers can learn from passionate sports fandom.
Paraag Marathe, president of the San Francisco 49ers football team, told retailers that during a typical game, 50 percent of the crowd is using the team’s mobile app, either making reservations for the stadium’s restaurants, downloading statistics, or buying team shirts and hats. The goal, Marathe said, is creating more fan loyalty and engagement, not selling. “You can’t sell season tickets to a sold-out house,” he said.
The hockey, basketball and women’s tennis associations also are trying to bolster fan engagement by making information and statistics available through mobile apps.
The customer-as-fan theme was repeated in sessions throughout the four days of the convention, with experts saying that in today’s world selling isn’t about getting a random person to stumble on your store and buy something, but about creating brand loyalty that makes shoppers look for you and buy from you, whether it is online, in a store, or on their phone.
In a later session at the convention, James Curleigh, president of the denim retailer Levi Strauss & Co., said that he thinks of his customers as fans and that retailers need to give them a memorable experience that keeps fans coming back. Levi’s decision to put its name on the new stadium in San Francisco, where the 49ers play and where rock concerts are held, is part of its plan to connect with new fans, he said.

January is Mentoring Month!
Become a Mentor and Change a Life
Four years ago, Ben & Jerry’s partnered with TRUE Mentors, Hoboken’s only one on one mentoring program, to support their launch by giving away free ice cream at the launch party. Since then, Ben & Jerry’s partnership with TRUE Mentors has helped 28 children be matched with mentors in 2014, and taught over 300+ children about the value of giving back in their community and generated thousands of smiles since they started in 2011.
With more mentors, that means in our community children will be getting higher grades and be less likely to drop out of school, to do drugs, to consume alcohol or to skip class.
Rotisserie chicken has become something of a food-world darling over the last few years, with renowned chefs like Marcus Samuelsson taking an interest in the once-humble weeknight dinner staple. Some trendy restaurants are even stuffing their birds with foie gras.
The restaurant Le Bon Choix, which means the “the right choice” in French, opts for keeping things simple, and affordable. Regretfully, the service is not as streamlined.
The 1,100-square-foot restaurant, which opened last April, is situated among a string of other businesses along the car-heavy Godwin Avenue in downtown Ridgewood. The décor is charming, featuring dark wood floors and furniture. The rotisserie oven, containing five skewers, is viewable from the dining room and can hold up to 30 birds as they rotate to a golden finish. The tables, 16 in all (19 on the weekends), are set with rolls of paper towels in lieu of napkins. Two overhead fans evoke a French bistro ambience.
The diverse background music, ranging from the Beatles to heavy metal, ensures that the room always feels lively even when it’s not full of the families with children who tend to be the most frequent diners. Children even get a complimentary gluten-free sugar cookie to decorate with colorful sprinkles as soon as they sit down (the cookies are then whisked away to the oven during the meal and are presented afterward as desserts). And while there is an especially friendly staff, there are some lapses in the dining.

No Ridgewood restaurant screams luxury like the six-month-old Roots Steakhouse.
First, a valet parked my car, a relief on a busy Saturday night. A hostess escorted me into the clubby dining room, which featured dark wood paneling, a stunning engraved ceiling and charming prints of vintage fashions. All around me, well-dressed customers dined on gleaming seafood platters, brawny steaks and towering desserts.
And once my meal began, it was clear that Roots has much to offer, including some excellent red meat and a first-class crabcake. But while Roots has some steaks that are prime and some steaks that are dry-aged, it offers none that are both, which may turn off many steak purists.
