NJ Senator Durr: Attributing the Deaths of Whales Disoriented by Wind Survey Work to Ship Strikes Is Disingenuous

Glassborro NJ, Senator Ed Durr issued the following response after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) determined that the deaths of two humpback whales were caused by vessel strikes off the coast of New York and New Jersey.

Union Beach NJ,  Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger and Assemblywoman Victoria Flynn have introduced new legislation (A5566) which seeks to regulate the use of acoustic sonar surveying and subsequently pause current testing while a new permitting structure is developed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) which would offer greater protection of marine life off the Jersey Shore.

Another Dead Whale Beached on the Jersey Shore

Manasquan NJ, another dead whale washed up off the shore of Manasquan, making the incident at least the ninth whale found dead on New York and New Jersey beaches .The Marine Mammal Stranding Center team is on the scene to try to determine what type of whale it was and what caused it to die. Around 20 whales have been found dead in the last few months along the entire East Coast. It has become an environmental concern.
