Starbucks’ ‘Brand Perception’ Takes A Massive Hit After Announcing Plans To Hire 10,000 Refugees

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz

About a month ago, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz decided to ‘take a stand’ in defiance of Trump’s immigration executive order and penned a message to the world vowing, among other things, to hire 10,000 refugees over the next 5 years and “build bridges, not walls, with Mexico”.  Here are some excerpts from the politically charged message drafted by Schultz with “deep concern and a heavy heart”:

I write to you today with deep concern, a heavy heart and a resolute promise. Let me begin with the news that is immediately in front of us: we have all been witness to the confusion, surprise and opposition to the Executive Order that President Trump issued on Friday, effectively banning people from several predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States, including refugees fleeing wars. I can assure you that our Partner Resources team has been in direct contact with the partners who are impacted by this immigration ban, and we are doing everything possible to support and help them to navigate through this confusing period.

Hiring Refugees: We have a long history of hiring young people looking for opportunities and a pathway to a new life around the world. This is why we are doubling down on this commitment by working with our equity market employees as well as joint venture and licensed market partners in a concerted effort to welcome and seek opportunities for those fleeing war, violence, persecution and discrimination.  There are more than 65 million citizens of the world recognized as refugees by the United Nations, and we are developing plans to hire 10,000 of them over five years in the 75 countries around the world where Starbucks does business.

Building Bridges, Not Walls, With Mexico: We have been open for business in Mexico since 2002, and have since opened almost 600 stores in 60 cities across the country, which together employ over 7,000 Mexican partners who proudly wear the green apron. Coffee is what unites our common heritage, and as I told Alberto Torrado, the leader of our partnership with Alsea in Mexico, we stand ready to help and support our Mexican customers, partners and their families as they navigate what impact proposed trade sanctions, immigration restrictions and taxes might have on their business and their trust of Americans.

Unfortunately, Schultz quickly found out the hard way that while most adult-aged Americans can agree that they like coffee, roughly 50% disagree with his leftist political opinions.  Which, according to Yahoo Finance, has sent the company’s “brand perception” into a downward spiral since January 29th.

Starbucks drops Christmas Imagery from Holiday Cups

Ridgewood NJ, Some Christian groups are attacking Starbucks for the minimal design on this year’s red-and-green holiday cups.
It seems that images of snowflakes, Christmas tree ornaments and other seasonal adornments seen in previous years have all been removed.

While a Starbucks designer told FOX News the company “wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories.”
But some Christians are accusing the company of being scrooges who “hate Jesus.”

This has gone as far as to have a former Arizona pastor Joshua Feuerstein said “Starbucks REMOVED CHRISTMAS from their cups because they hate Jesus,” in a Facebook video post that’s been watched over 12 million times and shared by more than 400,000 people. Feuerstein is urging Christians to tell baristas their name is “Merry Christmas” so that they’ll be “pranked” into writing the message on the cup.

So what do you think is it a design element or does Starbucks really ,”hate Jesus”? Or simply Political Correctness gone awry.

Why Is There No Starbucks Coffee House in Selma?

March 19, 2015 – 1:57 PM

Starbucks executive Corey duBrowa recently deleted his twitter account, after what he said were abusive comments as a result of his push for a campaign in which his baristas were to engage with customers about race relations.

“I was personally attacked through my Twitter account around midnight last night and the tweets represented a distraction from the respectful conversation we are trying to start around Race Together,” duBrowa said. “I’ll be back on Twitter soon.”

But the whole point of the conversations he promoted, was to get people talking about what is uncomfortable, and controversial.  It seems childish to delete his own twitter account over it.

A story from fastcocreate.com showed just what happens when you walk into a Starbucks wanting to engage in a discussion on race.  Pretty much nothing.  The baristas are young kids, just trying to do their job and get through the day, and are kind of embarrassed to even bring it up.  I kind of feel sorry for them.

Reader says perhaps Starbucks is succeeded with initiating productive dialogue by the people rather than the media

Reader says  perhaps Starbucks is succeeded with initiating productive dialogue by the people rather than the media

Here’s some fuel for the fire. Does anyone else notice that there is rarely any media coverage about discrimination of any other group that even comes close to the hype provided for the race-baiters that soak up the camera and $$$ today? Pick any “oppressed” group. I’m no historian, but did any of these groups destroy, on a continuous basis, their own communities with riots, fire and other illegal activities? And at the same time have their own media darlings who benefitted as a result. It appears that the groups who experienced such a plight improved themselves and their peers, or are in the process of this. There are already laws on the books. At what point is society no longer to blame and personal responsibility becomes necessary?? This is a genuine question, so looking forward to informative responses rather than personal attacks. I don’t like Starbucks coffee either, but perhaps it succeeded with initiating productive dialogue by the people rather than the media.

Howard Schultz, boss of Starbucks, told baristas to write ‘RaceTogether’ on cups in an effort to stimulate debate about racism
Twitter users quickly branded the campaign ‘patronizing’ and ‘cringe-inducing’, and subjected executives to a wave of mockery
One user pointed out that no black people featured in publicity photographs for the campaign

Twitter has ruthlessly mocked Starbucks campaign for the company’s new anti-racism campaign in which baristas talk to customers about race issues while serving their coffee.

One user tweeted, ‘I don’t have time to explain 400 years of oppression to you & still make my train’, while another pointed out, ‘y’all realize there are no coloured hands in the press photos right’.

A third speculated, ‘maybe Starbucks actually wanted to get people of all races & ethnicities to join hands and make fun’.

Strip mall with Starbucks rising on Route 17 in Ridgewood

THE RECORD

A strip mall that will house a Starbucks café and seven other retail and restaurant tenants is taking shape on Route 17 in Ridgewood, one of the first ground-up, new construction, retail centers in recent memory.

The project is rising on a former vacant plot near the intersection of southbound Route 17 and Linwood Avenue. The owner of the land, Malvern Burroughs, has been trying to develop the property since the 1980s, and received approval for the 15,000-square-foot retail center in November 2013.

The structure is expected to be completed in late spring, with store openings in the fall, said Laurence Liebowitz of Landmark Real Estate, which is leasing the center.

Installation of the brick-and-limestone façade of the building is expected to begin Jan. 15, Liebowitz said.

While there have been numerous redevelopments of retail properties on Route 17 over the past decade, a brand-new retail center on formerly vacant land is uncommon. Burroughs had proposed other uses for the land, including townhouse apartments and an office building, but could not win approval for those projects from the Ridgewood Planning Board.

Ridgewood NJ, A smoky fire in an underground electric vault on East Ridgewood Avenue near Starbucks resulted in the closure of East Ridgewood Avenue between Walnut Street and Cottage Place on Thursday night.  PSE&G personnel arrived shortly after 10:30 PM to facilitate repairs.

Ridgewood PD and FD responded.  No power outages were reported in the area, but Starbucks was evacuated and closed early due to smoke entering their basement through an underground conduit.
