Ridgewood NJ, the full moon, known as the Hunter’s Moon, coinciding with a supermoon for an extra bright and beautiful display in the night sky. According to NASA, the moon will reach its peak fullness on this  morning, October 17, 2024, at 7:26 a.m. EDT. However, you’ll be able to enjoy its glow for several days, from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.

On Wednesday, October 16, just before the moon rises at 8:48 p.m. EDT, it will reach its closest point to Earth, a moment known as perigee. This combination of a full moon and perigee creates a supermoon, which appears 14% brighter than your average full moon.

What Is a Supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when a full moon happens at the same time as the moon’s closest approach to Earth. The result? A slightly larger, significantly brighter moon that can be 14% brighter than usual, making it a striking sight in the night sky. The next supermoon after this one is set to peak on November 15, 2024.

What Is the Hunter’s Moon?

The Hunter’s Moon is the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon (the full moon closest to the autumn equinox). Historically, the Hunter’s Moon was named because its bright light helped hunters track animals preparing for winter. It rises at nearly the same time for several consecutive nights, providing extra light during the early evening—a tradition that dates back to the days when farmers and hunters relied on the moon’s glow to finish their work after dark.

With the leaves falling and fields clearing, this full moon is a signal of the changing season, and it’s the perfect time to enjoy some autumn stargazing. Whether you’re a seasoned astronomer or just someone who enjoys gazing at the night sky, this week’s Hunter’s Moon supermoon promises to be a breathtaking sight.

  1. Wonderful photo. The jimmy-capped phallic obelisk contrasted with the lunar feminine moon. *chef’s kiss*
