Off-Duty Ridgefield Firefighter Hailed as a Hero After Life-Saving Rescue

Ridgefield NJ, a Bergen County firefighter is being celebrated for his quick-thinking and heroic actions after helping save the life of a man involved in a serious car crash in Ridgefield last week.

Firefighter’s Brave Actions at the Scene of the Crash

Lt. Matthew Bonaguaro of the Ridgefield Fire Department was on his way home from work around 3:40 p.m. last Wednesday when he encountered the two-car collision on Grand Avenue. Without hesitation, he rushed to assist Ridgefield Police Officer Faith Karabiyik in removing an unresponsive man from one of the vehicles.

Realizing the man had no pulse, Bonaguaro quickly retrieved an automated external defibrillator (AED) and other medical supplies from the police patrol vehicle. He then helped Officer Karabiyik perform CPR, keeping the man alive until additional emergency responders arrived.

Recognized for His Heroism

Battalion Chief Scott Russo praised Bonaguaro in a formal letter, stating that his bravery and dedication reflect the highest values of the Ridgefield Fire Department. Russo has even recommended that Bonaguaro receive a lifesaving citation for his critical role in saving the man’s life.

“Matthew Bonaguaro is one of the most dedicated responders we have, and he truly cares for those in need,” Russo said. “This incident proves his unwavering commitment to our community.”
