Wyckoff NJ, unlike Ridgewood which voted to give up its right to vote on school budgets , parents have become increasingly angry over public education – on issues ranging from lockdowns to “woke” indoctrination and falling test scores – school board elections have become a focus of discontent and incumbents are increasingly retiring under pressure or losing re-election.

In 2018, 61% of school board seats were filled by incumbents. Last year, that number fell to 51%, and it dropped lower this year and Bergen County was no different.

Voters elected Republican-supported parents’ rights slates to the regional high school and grade school board seats in Tuesday’s race. Thomas Bogdansky and Doreen Mariani were elected to Wyckoff seats on the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School Board of Education, which also serves students from Franklin Lakes and Oakland.

At the grade school board level in Wyckoff , incumbent Louis Cicerchia was reelected with newcomers Juan Molina Jr. and James Schappert on a “Reading, Writing and Arithmetic” slate. Incumbents Daniel McHugh and Timothy Murphy did not seek new terms. The group ran on three areas of focus: educational excellence, fiscal health, and to “protect and preserve the rights of parents and guardians to make choices for their child’s best interests.”

The seats were vacated by board President John Carolan and trustee Robert Fortunato, who did not run for new terms. In Franklin Lakes The wife and husband team of Kim and Joel Ansh won seats on the high school board of education and borough Council on Tuesday with an unorthodox joint campaign promoting parents’ rights.
