Ridgewood NJ, President-elect Donald Trump has taken his battle against “Fake News” to court, filing a lawsuit against the Des Moines Register and pollster J. Ann Selzer on Monday. The lawsuit alleges the publication of a misleading poll just before Election Day, which showed Vice President Kamala Harris leading Trump in Iowa by 3 percentage points. Trump went on to win Iowa by a significant margin of 14 percentage points, securing a second term in the White House.

Trump Accuses Pollsters of Deception

The lawsuit, filed in Polk County, Iowa, accuses the Des Moines Register and Selzer of violating Iowa’s consumer fraud laws by allegedly engaging in deceptive practices.

“Selzer’s polling ‘miss’ was not an astonishing coincidence — it was intentional,” the complaint states.

The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount in damages and requests a court order to:

  1. Prevent the release of further “deceptive polls.”
  2. Force the pollster to disclose all data and methodologies used in the November survey.

Trump: Polls Were Election Interference

At a press conference on Monday, Trump previewed the lawsuit, calling the poll a case of “fraud and election interference.”

“For too long, left-wing pollsters have attempted to influence electoral outcomes through manipulated polls that have unacceptable error rates and are not grounded in widely accepted polling methodologies,” the lawsuit argues.

The lawsuit names several defendants, including:

  • J. Ann Selzer and her polling company.
  • The Des Moines Register.
  • Gannett, the Register’s parent company.

Selzer declined to comment, while a Gannett spokesperson, Lark-Marie Anton, defended the poll, stating:

“We have acknowledged that the Selzer/Des Moines Register pre-election poll did not reflect the ultimate margin of President Trump’s Election Day victory in Iowa. We released the poll’s full demographics, crosstabs, weighted and unweighted data, and a technical explanation from Ann Selzer. We stand by our reporting on the matter and believe this lawsuit is without merit.”

Trump’s Legal Crusade Against the Media

This lawsuit adds to Trump’s escalating legal battles with major media outlets. The president-elect has previously filed lawsuits against:

  • ABC
  • CBS
  • Journalist Bob Woodward
  • The Pulitzer Prize Board

Trump also highlighted ABC News’s $15 million settlement in a defamation case he brought earlier this year as a win against biased reporting.

The Impact of Selzer’s Polling

The Selzer poll, released just days before the election, had been closely followed due to the pollster’s strong reputation. Trump’s lawsuit alleges that the poll was a deliberate attempt to sway public opinion:

“While Selzer is not the only pollster to engage in this corrupt practice, she had a huge platform and following, and thus, a significant and impactful opportunity to deceive voters,” the lawsuit states.

Trump’s Iowa Victory and Next Steps

Trump’s decisive win in Iowa, despite the poll’s predictions, underscores the stakes of the lawsuit. The president-elect is demanding accountability for what he calls “manipulated polls” and sees the legal fight as part of his broader mission to challenge media bias.

As the case unfolds, both sides are gearing up for a contentious legal battle. With Trump’s continued focus on media integrity and electoral transparency, this lawsuit is likely to spark national debate about the role of polling in shaping public perception.

  1. Hillary didn’t sue the pollsters when they said she was ahead and Trump wound up winning instead. Let’s stop the lawsuits already. There are more important things to deal with in this country.

    2. Not only that, but the Kamala camp’s internal polls showed that she was actually being crushed in the polls, and if her camp had that info, so too did Trump’s. So, yeah, the whole thing is stupid.

      1. so you agree the fake poll was election interference

        1. What polls for the public aren’t fake? Didn’t you know that Ray’s Pizza is world famous?

Election promises made and not kept are forms of election interference. Donations in exchange for influence (whether by corporations, individuals, or foreign governments) are election interference. What isn’t election interference? One man’s election interference is another’s perception management.

  2. That’s great…
