Reader says ,”Property taxes in Ridgewood are out of control”

“Property taxes in Ridgewood are out of control. See the late model tinted window SUVs and private firing range (for a force that has never discharged a weapon) fur the Ridgewood Police Department, or the three full-time professional firefighters redundantly stationed 24/7 at Engine 311 on West Glen when the main firehouse is less than a mile away. Don’t even get started on the teachers who scream ”impasse” the second the BOE proposes reducing their platinum healthcare benefits…”

  1. 2/3 of property taxes go to the Board of Ed .

  2. The library and Board of Education will be our undoing. The debt that they will incur is irresponsible. It is not clear that anyone in power stands for fiscal responsibility.

The developers want a new library, Performing Arts Center and more parking garages. It makes their rentals more appealing and will attract the NYC and Hoboken renters.

The residents will be paying for everything.

  3. Where are you getting your data?!?!?

Ridgewood taxes are *approximately* at the median value of Bergen county property taxes.

If Ridgewood taxes are “out of control”, then so, too, are those of half the towns in Bergen County (a point I wouldn’t argue, by the way).

  4. How about the the Parking Garage and the other Performing Arts Center at the High School?

  5. all a case of seizure of other peoples Money

    Boomers will sell and leave\

  7. What do you mean sell and leave?
That process is in full swing and will only accelerate come spring. I along with several of my neighbors have a sign in the ground and can’t wait to leave the corruption, incompetence and malfeasance that is Ridgewood today. To all the suckers hanging around…good luck with the Hotel going up at the bus station.

  8. What a bunch of misguided muppets in Trenton… the thoroughly discredited “Millionaire’s tax” is back on the table…. all to pay for platinum healthcare and excessive pension benefits for teachers, police & fire… which will end up bankrupting the state and many municipalities anyway, because they are a Ponzi scheme whereby retirees are drawing pensions for more years than they actually worked. NJ continues to spiral to insolvency.

  9. Janes nailed it. Housing prices are flat to down over the past five years in Bergen, and yet all of the public sector unions the Village and BOE contract with are locked in to CBAs that guarantee wage increases above the rate of inflation, plus excessive healthcare and pension benefits.

These need to be diminished. It’s a Ponzi scheme.

No one deserves a full pension and platinum healthcare benefits for more years than they served, the math doesn’t work.

  10. Tax lady is right, property taxes across Bergen County are unsustainable when property prices are flat to down. It’s the dirty secret the locust realtors don’t tell you.

  11. The state of NJ has high property taxes due to the unions of public sector workers.
The majority of taxes in Ridgewood are due to the bloated board of Ed budget.
Public safety (police and fire) and municipal services are well within reason.
The idiots who have run this town in past administrations thought firing the dog catcher and school janitors, and out-sourcing those positions was going to save us money.
Want to save money? Increase class sizes, and you need fewer over-compensated teachers. When i went to the ridgewood schools from the late 1960’s thru late 1970s we have much larger classes… and much smarter students!
The only other way to keep taxes down is to encourage those without children to STAY PUT and subsidize those who have children in the schools. Historically there has always been a ‘turnover’ of residents, but the last 20 years I have seen more of our ‘temporary residents’ bail out when the last of the offspring graduates RHS…then beat feet back to NYC saddling the rest of us with the tax increases from their ‘yes votes’ on the school budgets.

  12. Do you think it’s bad now wait another 3 to 5 years. You’re going to be eating macaroni and cheese and bologna sandwiches. Forget about going out to dinner. OK on Saturday night you can have peanut butter and jelly.
