Ridgewood NJ, this may come as a surprise to some residents given the Schedler Park Property is targeted for clear cutting , but according to the Mayor in 2024, the Village Council is launching an exciting initiative to restore and expand our tree canopy. As part of this program, we will plant 215 new trees and introduce 90 saplings through our Adopt-A-Sapling program. This effort is a direct response to the devastation caused by extreme weather and pest infestations, such as the Emerald Ash Borer, which have severely impacted our tree population.
Why Trees Matter
Trees do more than just enhance the beauty and provide shade in our community; they are an essential part of our infrastructure, just like roads and sidewalks. Here are a few reasons why this initiative is so important:
- Air Quality: Trees help to clean the air by filtering out pollutants, improving the overall health of our community.
- Flood Control: In a flood-prone area like ours, trees play a vital role in managing excess water. Their roots absorb water during rainy days, helping to reduce the risk of flooding.
- Aesthetic & Comfort: Beyond their practical benefits, trees provide a perfect spot for relaxation. Picture yourself sitting under a beautiful tree, enjoying the shade while reading a good book on a sunny day!
Join the Movement
We encourage everyone in the Village to support this tree-planting initiative. Together, we can work to rebuild a thriving, healthy tree canopy that will benefit future generations.

Just makes you wonder.
Vagianos is such a two face POS. he has to clear cut Schedler and put down plastic grass to pay back the sports people who support him financially. And then he grandstands about the new saplings which are 12-24 inches high.
they want to cut down almost 300 trees from what I have heard. The village already removed a few acres of trees over there and I saw on Facebook the other day that Heather Mailander and probably that rogue ass Chris Rutihauser told the village to dump some snow and salt from Graydon Pool over onto the historic land at Schedler many years ago and some guy also noted that they used to dump it into the Hohokus brook too what is happening to this place. Then they stock the brooks with fish that people eat. how is no one suing this place yet?
I am all for rebuilding the canopy however I do not understand why new trees have been planted directly under power lines. Not sure how many years it will take for this to become an issue. In some cases, the side of the street with the power lines have the planted trees, and the side of the street without the power lines have no trees. Who is making these decisions? It is still early in their growth, can these trees be moved? That might save big issues in the future.
In an urban environment like Ridgewood, trees do little or nothing to mitigate “flood control.” These cut-and-paste parts of the article do nothing for your credibility. The same is true for removing branches from brooks to help with flood control. Yes, they are unsightly and should be cleaned up, but the flooding we experience is not a result of unsightly branches in the brooks.
