Jersey City NJ, a fire that started in a commercial area on Tuesday sparked several brush fires nearby. The blaze impacted the evening rush hour commute. The fire started Tuesday afternoon at Reliable Paper Recycling, located at 1 Caven Point Ave. It is considered one of the largest paper recycling plants in the tri-state area. The fire sent thick, black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles. Large flames were also seen coming off the blocks of recycled paper.
Over 20 Jersey City fire companies were on the scene in an industrial section of town, pouring thousands of gallons of water on massive bales of paper. Approximately 65 people work at the paper recycling plant and several of them attempted to put the fire out when it was first noticed at round 2:30 p.m.
New Jersey Transit says that the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail is suspended in both directions between Liberty State Park and 45th Street Station. Jersey City officials say that the fire is also impacting the New Jersey Turnpike near Garfield and Bayview avenues. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
