Ridgewood NJ, according to Village Mayor Paul Vagianos the Town Garage property which “has been sitting dormant – and not very attractive – in our beloved downtown since about 2007. This past October the Village took ownership of the property, and a couple of weeks ago the building was demolished. We’ve begun remediation of the site – at the expense of the prior owner – which will be followed by two years of required environmental testing.”

If you think you smelled gas you are not alone, since work has begun and numerous calls of people smelling gas, over the past few days to the Ridgewood Fire Department.  Employee parking section of the Walnut Street lot is totally closed off.  All old tanks are being removed.  This is a 2 year remediation project as per Village Manager Keith Kazmark. Word is there are 7 , yes seven tanks under the Town Garage and adjacent properties, however we are unsure as to the reliability of the number .

  2. No kidding, you smell gas. You’re gonna smell gas for a long time. I told you that Franklin Avenue from Broad Street to Maple Avenue is full of petroleum. That’s why they call that gasoline alley the whole road underneath is contaminated.

    1. You’re correct. Every corner had a gas station when I grew up here. A spill at one property creates a plume on another.

  3. another village boondogle….

  4. I wouldn’t light up any cigars around there.

  5. Excuse me thumbs down are you a fool, what is wrong with you? Obviously, you don’t know the history of that block. Now I have to tell you to spin your thumb around, spit on it and slide it up your ass. You go back from the 20s to the 90s Nothing but repair shops, gas stations, car dealers and at all those locations 99% of them were leaking so some kind of petroleum into the ground. That’s why they’re not in business anymore. Think about all the gas stations that we used to have in Ridgewood what’s left one up by the cemetery, I’ve been involved with construction on that block for a long time so don’t tell me.

    1. I bought gas at the gas station on Franklin Ave. across from Stop & Shop last week. But I agree that there used to be more–including a Shell station and a Mobil station on the west side. Now one is a bank and the other is a strip mall.

  6. There was between nine from Maple Avenue to Broad Street, that’s gone back to at least the 40s. combination of gas stations, repair car dealers

  7. I don’t know what it is with some of these people that put thumbs down, obviously you don’t know your history

  8. If you look back how many gas stations closed up just in Ridgewood, Midlandpark, and Hohokus in the past 20 years remember in Hohokus they used to have four gas stations now they have none, they were all leaking into the water system

  9. Let’s see what the total amount is going to be, I’m sure it’s gonna be big money

    1. Don’t worry! Evan says we can just bond it.

  10. I believe that the previous owner is on the hook for the cleanup. Can’t we all agree that cleaning this hot mess up is a good thing if it doesn’t cost the taxpayers anything?

    1. Common sense statement, and no bitching. Nice post.
