Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Crew brought home a silver medal and two other boats finished in the top 10 on Sunday at the 54th annual Head of the Schuylkill Regatta (HOSR) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Run on a 3,800-meter course that twists and turns under four bridges, this year’s Head of the Schuylkill featured more than 8,500 rowers of all ages from 282 clubs across the United States, Canada, and four other countries. Ridgewood sent 26 athletes to compete in 12 boats.

“The Head of the Schuylkill has grown into an incredibly large and highly competitive event. Almost every race here features a deep field of dozens of the best rowers in North America,” said Ridgewood Crew Head Coach Boris Roque-Alvarez. “So our team’s results here this year are quite impressive.”

He also highlighted the team’s two best finishes of the day — in the Mens Varsity and Junior Varsity Quad races — as very strong performances. “Those eight boys have had an extra challenge, training to race in two different events throughout the fall. So, for them to do as well as they did in the eight-man race last week at the Head of the Charles and then here today in the quads shows the depth of their commitment and perseverance.”

Among those eight rowers Roque-Alvarez singled out, the four-man boat of freshman Graham Richardson and juniors Michael Shkop, Matt Moomjy, and Uhmjoo Han brought home Ridgewood’s lone medal of the day, a silver in the Mens High School JV Quad event (12:40.176). Their second-place finish came against a field of 31 other boats, which included two other Ridgewood entries.

At last year’s Head of the Schuylkill, then-eighth grader Richardson also scored the team’s only podium finish of the day, a gold medal in the Mens High School Frosh/Novice Singles event.

In the varsity event of the Mens High School Quad race, the boat of senior Lucas Evers, juniors Will Nasr and Sam Scharfenberg, and sophomore Tristan Riedel came in fifth out of 39 entries in a highly competitive race (12:26.112). Less than two-and-a-half seconds separated the third, fourth, and fifth-place boats. Sunday’s finish also marked a five-place improvement in this same race from 2023, when Ridgewood came in tenth.

Ridgewood scored its other top 10 finish on the day in the Mens High School JV Quad race. The all-junior boat of Paul Hallowell, Daniel Hept, Oliver Ilin-Schneider, and James Ryan finished in 10th place (13:25.502). With their performance, Ridgewood placed two boats in the top 10, which was only bested by a pair of boats from Germantown Friends School that came in fourth and seventh in the race.

Other notable performances on the day for Ridgewood included a 12th-place finish in the Mens High School Varsity Doubles race by senior Will Caroll and junior Luciano Saladino (14:11.672). That race featured 53 boats in total. Sophomore Atticus Smith also scored a top-half finish in the Mens High School JV Singles race, finishing 17th in a field of 37 (16:11.981).
