Ridgewood NJ, Some educators leave a lasting mark on a school building, but Basil Pizzuto left one on an entire generation.

In a deeply moving and permanent tribute to a man whose influence stretched far beyond the confines of a classroom, Ridgewood High School (RHS) officially announced the renaming of Heermance Place to Pizzuto Way. The emotional dedication ceremony took place alongside the school’s vibrant annual Celebration of the Arts, drawing community members, educators, and former students together to honor a local legend.

What is the “Pizzuto Way”?

Following the dedication, members of the Ridgewood community took to social media to reflect on what living and teaching the “Pizzuto Way” truly means.

“An excellent reminder to do things ‘Pizzuto’s way,’ such as always asking ourselves, ‘is this what’s best for kids?’ before making important educational or policy decisions… We also need to remember the importance of connecting, understanding, and knowing each student and their own unique stories, challenges, gifts, and needs.” — Katie Kashmanian, Facebook

“Basil continues to have such a profound effect on our District and everything he did. I love this dedication to him. His focus was always on what is best for the students!” — Carolyn Holt, Facebook

A Life Defined by Service, Education, and Community

Basil Pizzuto passed away suddenly at the age of 49 at Valley Hospital, leaving behind his wife of over two decades, Adriana, and their two sons, Owen and Aiden. A proud graduate of Montclair State University with a degree in Math Education, Basil also earned two Master’s degrees in Educational Technology and Educational Leadership.

His 24-year career at Ridgewood High School was nothing short of extraordinary:

  • Leadership Roles: Hired as a math teacher in 1997, he rose through the ranks to serve as Lead Grade Administrator, Interim Co-Principal, and Assistant Principal of Administration and Student Services.

  • The Heart and Soul of RHS: Described by colleagues as the epicenter of the school, Basil was the ultimate go-to person. He argued ceaselessly for a mission-driven, student-centered approach to education.

  • Global Impact: Combining his love for young people and travel, Basil personally led numerous educational trips to overseas destinations, including Germany, Italy, Iceland, Greece, and Eastern Europe.

A Dedicated Volunteer Firefighter

Beyond his immense impact inside the school district, Basil dedicated 32 years of his life to public safety as a volunteer firefighter for the Saddle Brook Fire Department. Starting his journey as a junior firefighter at just 16 years old, he climbed the ranks to become an engineer, lieutenant, captain, and Assistant Chaplain.

A Passion for Music

Music was a cornerstone of Basil’s soul. A talented pianist and organist from a young age, he was hired in 1992 as the full-time organist for St. Philip the Apostle Church. His musical tastes were beautifully eclectic—ranging from classical masters like Bach to iconic rock and alternative bands like The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, and The Cure.

A Legacy That Will Live On Forever

Though his time on earth was cut tragically short, Basil lived his life to its absolute absolute fullest. He once famously remarked, “Well, I’ve had a good run.” In just under 50 years, Basil lived, loved, and served more than most do in a century.

In lieu of flowers, the Pizzuto family asks that community members honor Basil’s legacy of love and radical generosity by making a donation to their favorite charity.
