Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Police Department has issued a scam alert after reports of criminals impersonating police officers to target residents and former residents. These scammers are using deceptive tactics to trick individuals into providing money or sensitive information.

How the Scam Works

Scammers are calling individuals, pretending to be Ridgewood Police officers. They use phone number masking to make it appear as though the call is coming from the police department.

Protect Yourself

Here are some key points to keep in mind to avoid falling victim:

  • Verify the Call: If someone claiming to be an officer contacts you, hang up and call the Ridgewood Police Department’s main phone number to confirm the legitimacy of the call.
  • Beware of Payment Requests: Police departments and courts never collect bail money via cryptocurrency or gift cards. These are clear signs of a scam.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you receive such a call, alert the Ridgewood Police Department immediately.

Community Appreciation

The Ridgewood Police Department thanks residents for bringing these fraudulent calls to their attention. Your vigilance helps keep the community safe.

Stay Safe

  1. Three calls yesterday and the caller ID was SPOOFED pretending to be Chase bank
Hang up and call the # on your credit card bill or bank statement

  2. I once received a call that the Caller I.D. screen identified as the Midland Park Police Department. (I live in Ridgewood.) I ignored it. No message was left. I did not call the MP police to check because it was clearly spam.

It was a long time ago, before “spoofing” was so common.
