Ridgewood NJ, The history of street sweeping machines dates back to the 19th century when the need for cleaner streets in urban areas became apparent.
Prior to the invention of mechanized sweepers, streets were cleaned manually using brooms and shovels, which was labor-intensive and inefficient. The introduction of street sweeping machines revolutionized the process, making it faster, more effective, and less reliant on human labor.
Ridgewood used to be known for it ultra clean Central business district ,in recent years that is no longer the case . Overflowing garbage cans and dirty streets are now the new norm .
One of the earliest mechanical street sweepers was patented by C.S. Bishop in 1849 in the United States. This early sweeper was horse-drawn and featured rotating brushes to sweep debris into a collection bin. Over the years, various improvements were made to street sweeping machines, including the addition of motorized engines, larger collection bins, and more sophisticated sweeping mechanisms.
According to many posters they did a better job over 100 years ago and its past time to take back clean streets instead of wasting money on sill over priced garbage cans .
Today, street sweeping machines come in a variety of designs and configurations to suit different needs and environments. Some are mounted on trucks for easy maneuverability on city streets, while others are larger vehicles designed for sweeping highways and industrial areas. Modern street sweepers often feature advanced technologies such as vacuum systems, water jets, and air filtration systems to improve efficiency and environmental sustainability.
The value of street sweeping machines lies in their ability to maintain clean and safe public spaces. Regular street sweeping helps remove debris, litter, and pollutants from roads and sidewalks, reducing the risk of accidents, improving air quality, and preventing pollution of waterways. Street sweeping also helps prevent the buildup of debris that can clog storm drains and contribute to flooding during heavy rain events.
In addition to their practical benefits, street sweeping machines also play a symbolic role in promoting civic pride and community well-being. Clean streets and public spaces create a positive impression on residents and visitors alike, fostering a sense of pride in the local community and enhancing quality of life.
Overall, street sweeping machines have a long history of contributing to cleaner, safer, and more attractive urban environments, and their value in maintaining public health and infrastructure continues to be recognized today.

Ridgewood doesn’t want to spend on cleaning, just on sports and Healthbarn.
Too busy squirting water on garbage trucks to run the street sweeper.
I don’t know what the hell was going on, the CBD never look like this years ago. It’s filthy they should be sweeping seven days a week. There’s no excuse, with all the restaurants open seven days a week it needs to be done just like the garbage cans. Not sure was in charge but we feel as a store owner the manager needs to get involved something going on.
I love it. It will smell like NYC soon and will bring all the amazing memories to all of us who got bored with the monotony of a quiet and clean suburb. Rats should also be populating soon. The young libs who are moving in daily are feeling right at home.
Rich n stoopid!!!
Cleaning the artificial turf fields is the priority.
Homeless are already making themselves comfortable
So very true that’s all you worry about is their fields being cleaned up, but the CBD is filthy, look at all the corners of the parking lots , behind buildings alleyways how come the border Health is not inspecting this. The village has enough money to pay overtime to have the sweepers sweep on weekends throughout the summer to control litter, if not, we’re gonna have her rats run all over the place again there’s no excuse they have money from the Snow budget to move over to clean communities to sweep. stop the bullshit. The village has become into a little city, so no excuse that sweepers don’t run seven days a week. All the towns sweep on weekends. I’m sure there’s someone that would work the overtime and who picks up that animals why are they laying around so long. in the past, the foreman of the Dpw used to go out and pick up animals, don’t we have a foreman riding around to pick up truck anymore. What the hell is going on who is in charge? Who is making these decisions because they’re not working. The village manager needs to get involved immediately and what the hell is going on I think he’s being fed a bull shit story.
by someone . Who is informing the village manager now.
Ridgewood is becoming a Liberal Utopia … aka a Dump.
The sweeper crew is not performing well.
Historically the sweeper has made a rare appearance on my street, usually on the same day as the lazy neighbors put their recycling in the street (vs where it belongs on the curb).
Logic would dictate that scheduling a sweep on a day with obstacles is foolish… or write summons to those who put their containers in the street
The sweeper cannot even come down our street there are so many potholes. Huge ones. It is awful living in Ridgewood now. Downtown is dirty, priorities of this mayor and council are backward. They have money sitting in buckets for non essential items like another field, couple of million, but yet nothing else will get done. Disgusting. This plus the parking makes Ridgewood undesirable for many people who would have wanted to come to town.
Under the trestle is full debris along the curb line . Leaves
Just can’t understand why these sweepers are not out there’s no snow, mild winter, and the roads of this still filthy. it doesn’t make sense unless they are broken down. There’s no excuse sweeper. Should be out seven days a week. I cannot believe that. The mayor Council are not doing anything about this situation. Where is the village manager? The road should be spotless, no ice, no snow, they should be filling potholes sweeping they’re just not performing
They can’t even afford to buy machines. Ridgewood is leasing them!!
First it was the lack of leaf collection, now no one’s streets are getting sweeped. Where is Keith Kazmark???
