Ridgewood NJ, an agenda item scheduled for discussion during the Ridgewood Village Council’s March 22nd Work Session is possible official Council support of the NJ Green Amendment bill. The agenda item was reportedly placed at the request of Deputy Mayor Pamela Perron, who may lead tonight’s discussion.

As proposed the New Jersey environmental rights amendment (Green Amendment) would read as follows:

  1. Every person has a right to a clean and healthy environment, including pure water, clean air, and ecologically healthy habitats, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic qualities of the environment. The State shall not infringe upon these rights, by action or inaction.
  1. The State’s public natural resources, among them its waters, air, flora, fauna, climate, and public lands, are the common property of all the people, including both present and future generations. The State shall serve as trustee of these resources, and shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all people.
  1. This paragraph and the rights stated herein are (1) self-executing, and (2) shall be in addition to any rights conferred by the public trust doctrine or common law.

The Ridgewood Blog is puzzled as to how the “nortmal” Ridgewood Village Council’s desire to remove a canopy of mature shade trees and subsequently install artificial turf in an area populated with private wells, is in sync with what the Green Amendment is all about.

Somewhat hypocritical, wouldn’t you say? Everyone on our staff certainly thinks so.

  1. Perron is the biggest hypocrite in the bunch of them. She talks the talk, but doesn’t walk the walk.

  5. North Hillside’s canopy setting has been cut without notice or justification to its residents. And now our overseers want to preach to us the values of a green initiative. I don’t trust them and neither should you.

    1. What is the “north hillside canopy”? the town cut the trees on the street?

  6. The heads of the sports groups are supposedly circulating an email asking their members to come out in force at tonight‘s meeting, and to bring along their children dressed in sports uniforms.

  7. Perron is being strung up about this at the meeting. Watching now on TV

    1. She’s an idiot. She thinks the public will believe anything she says. In actuality, we don’t believe anything she says!

  9. I don’t know what this council is going to do, if anything, they should do come furlough days. They have no money for emergency. Very dangerous operating like that.

  10. Pam is quickly becoming the laughing stock of the Village Council, much to the delight of Siobhan, who previously held the title of Official Social Media Punching Bag. I can’t believe our illustrious Deputy Mayor had the audacity to say that because the Green Amendment doesn’t specifically prohibit a governmental entity from installing artificial turf, there’s nothing wrong with the Village doing it. Typical lawyer speak – “because it doesn’t spell out exactly what we can’t do, even if it breaks the spirit of the law, we’re going to do it, and laugh in the faces of those opposed while we do it.” What a hypocrite! I should have listened to Bell Biv DeVoe before I voted for her – “Never trust a big butt with a smile.”

  11. The way they kept feinting at the meeting was absurd and appalling. Sorry, you can’t have it both ways. Lorraine made this point more than once, as did residents.

  12. So, can we use the “Green Amendment” to shut down Low Income Housing development?
