Ridgewood NJ, Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said the council was given packets about the 2015 Schedler grant, which includes information from the October and November meetings, updated and complete grant application and responses from the county.

The village submitted a request for a $59,200 grant for Memorial Park and Van Neste Square, which would be used to replace brick pavers with decorative concrete sidewalk, remove aerial electric fixtures with underground electric, install new fencing, among other ideas. Sonenfeld said a finalized plan will be made public closer to the Sept. 14 public meeting.

Is there no tradition left in Ridgewood. When will it stop?

Now they want to remove the decorative brick many of which have names of family  (Grandparents, parents children and in memorial of deceased family members any yes and maybe beloved pets) Why?  Because we can apply for a grant?  At last night meeting the VM said we would relocate them.  Where?  I know that the VM stated that a plan will be made public at the Sept. 14 meeting but will this be another case that it a done deal before the public has a chance to voice the opinion.  They want to use concrete.  We all know what happens to concrete that is put down around trees. Just look at the CBD sidewalk cracks not to mention that digging around the trees may kill them. Try going to the engineering dept to get a permit for a brick patio. They will tell you that anything over 12 x 12 feet will need a seepage pit.  More digging.  So will we hear next that the monument need to be moved? Just upgrade the electric put in a new fence and reset the brick and leave them alone.

  1. Those vanity bricks are not meant to be in place forever. Those paying for bricks should realize that they are used to offset remodeling expenses in the park. They are not a permanent installation.

You can offer to give them back to the people who paid for them. Think twice about this method of fundraising.

  2. Is everything in this town controversial? People are complaining about every move that the village makes. Moving the podium used for comments at council meetings to the side of the room. – horrors!

And turning in neighbors for sidewalk bumps and lawn watering. Some do not want dogs (cats, rabbits, deer?) urinating on the grass in front of their homes. I think they would prefer doggie diapers!

Why is everyone so mad at everyone else? What has happened to us?

  3. Once ahead barreling ahead without thinking. Like the idiotic Garber Square debacle.

  4. No respect for tradition. None. Sickening.

  5. The park is fine. Met is beautiful. LeVe it alone. Fix Kings Pond instead.

  6. When was it last renovated? How many year ago were these pavers installed? There must be a minimum life for the pavers, are we up / over that minimum life span for the pavers?

  7. Follow the money – check who gets the contracts. I bet the same company that removes snow here will get the contract for cement work. What a great combination – snow removal and masonry?

  8. Whats the total surface area that will be replaced with concrete? If it’s less than 5900 sq feet, then follow the money.

  9. The library is looking to renovate – again. Expect them to expand their wall of fame too.

Creat an online plaque. It the problem that we love the look of the pavers with names carved in, or is it that people paid $100 and thought that their names would be enshrined forever? They are not service veterans.

  10. Follow the money – all such contracts from the engineering department go to one company in Westwood and one company in Hawthorne.

  11. Check page 4 of this document. The company which is most likely going to get this bid AGAIN, had earlier proposed to demolish a 2 car garage for 9500 – EXCLUDING dumpster cost. Dumpster is extra for 37,400.

Most people in Ridgewood have gone through renovation and have seen how long does it take to demolish.

  12. OP – The Engineering Department does NOT issue permits . . . the Buildings Department does. Get if correct if you are going to whine.

  13. 10:05am . You don’t know your facts.

  14. Let’s entomb the entire CBD in a block of amber. Then nothing will ever be maintained or changed. It will be perfectly preserved for scientists to study what caused a great community to bicker itself out of existence.

    1. once again destroying the Village is not progress

  15. 10:02 am thanks for the link. Wow 1100 per dumpster?? I just checked with my neighbor, who was his own GC for their project. He paid 675 per 20 yard dumpster and they could keep it for as long as they want.
In this case, these 37 dumpsters will be used in a short time, no wait period. Village should be getting better than 675?
Also the tree company will probably sell the mulch and firewood, do they really charge 1100 per dumpster?

  16. Fixing things that need fixing is a great idea. This park however looks beautiful. Paver bricks might have a limited life span, but based on the appearance of these bricks they still have plenty of life. Why change them out for ugly concrete “decorative” paver blocks? How ridiculous.

  17. 10:28 – fix the things that need fixing. Don’t waste taxpayer money on demolishing perfectly nice things to make something else. So ridiculous. This is not like a living room that you feel like redecorating. This is a park with many commemorative markers. The fact that YOU don’t know any of thes people commemorated on them does not make them meaningless. You are an a-hole.

  18. Great, so this $60,000 grant will only cost the taxpayer a 1/2 million!

  19. Wrong 10:05 the engineering department must sign off on the permit because of the Permeable Surface taken up by the pavers . Been there done that.

  20. I can see that a lot of poster are transplants from NY NY.

  21. 10:27 – I sure do. Engineering Department may do reviews but the Building Department issues permits. Sorry.

  22. 12:41 is a NY hater..LOL takes a village dude..did you farm here as a youngUn?.

  23. The bricks are not some beautiful artifact from our history. They are about 10 years old. There must have been something else installed before that.

When we make renovations on our homes we are not destroying, we are improving. On the other hand, I do not need taxpayer money to make improvements to my home.

  24. Yes 6:10 there was something there before the bricks. Macadam and it looked like hell.

  25. Glad to hear that 6:11 because I wouldn’t want my tax money going to improve your home. That is mighty kind of you to use your own money

  26. Just 10 yrs old? Follow the money.

  27. 6:11 – ten years old. Let’s see, the park was renovated in 1995. So,the pavers are ten years old. Oh, I get it, this posting is from Gwenn Hauck.
