Rutherford NJ, a Bergen County man, already serving time for impersonating law enforcement, was convicted this week for assaulting a homeless man in Newark nearly five years ago.
Conviction and Charges
Frederick Parisi, 57, of Rutherford, was found guilty by an Essex County jury on nine counts, including aggravated assault, impersonating a police officer, and endangering an injured victim, according to the county prosecutor’s office.
“Justice must be accessible to all, especially those from marginalized communities who have too often been denied it,” said Assistant Prosecutor Shelby Day, who handled the case alongside Gianna Sanguinetti.
Details of the 2020 Incident
The attack occurred on March 13, 2020, when Parisi—then a security guard at the Family Dollar store on Clinton Avenue in Newark—chased a homeless man suspected of shoplifting in a police-style vehicle. According to authorities, he then struck the man, Hector Rodriguez, with the car before pepper spraying him, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
Previous Conviction and Upcoming Sentencing
At the time of his arrest, Parisi was in possession of two fake law enforcement identification cards, one falsely stating he was a Passaic police officer and another claiming a national concealed carry permit.
Parisi is already serving a 16-year sentence in Georgia for similar offenses, including impersonating a law enforcement officer and illegal firearm possession as a convicted felon. He was extradited to New Jersey to stand trial.
With this latest conviction, Parisi faces up to 10 more years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for April.
