Reader Comments : “IRS apologizes for targeting tea party groups”

It is telling that the IRS thoughtlessly let the cat out of the bag that they used words like “tea party” and “patriot” in the titles of organizations as triggers for increased scrutiny (read: audit) when determining whether they merit tax-exempt status.  More than likely 90-95% of IRS staffers already personally thoughtlessly assume that tea party/patriot organizations are inherently political.

Ardent progressives/liberals have been hard at work in this country politicizing everything they can get their grubby little mitts on.  Once they are successful in politicizing a subject, they can begin to dominate it under the umbrella of their political perspective, because most people in polite conversation shy away from politically sensitive subjects.

Tea Party/Patriot organizations are not truly political in nature, much to the chagrin of dedicated progressives and modern liberals.  They believe in preserving and strengthening the principles upon which this country was founded.  Such principles should be, and thankfully still are, above mere ‘politics’.

One reason why the Ridgewood Fourth of July parade organizers do not and should not have a problem with individuals who are members of Tea Party organizations marching under their own banner in the parade is that they are true civic organizations that do not support particular candidates or parties.  Another reason is that the annual Ridgewood Fourth of July Parade exists for essentially the same reason that Tea Party/Patriot organizations do:  To foster greater respect for the founding principles and documents (e.g., Declaration of Independence, Constitution) of this country!

Seeking Residents to Volunteer for Financial Advisory Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment

SEEKING RIDGEWOOD RESIDENTS TO VOLUNTEER TO SERVE ON THE COMMUNITY CENTER ADVISORY BOARD,

FINANCIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE AND ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT

The Village Council is looking for residents who are interested in volunteering to serve on the Community Center Advisory Board, Financial Advisory Committee, and the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

The Community Center Advisory Board develops policies and procedures for the operation of the Community Center facility and assists in the fulfillment of the County Municipal Alliance Grant requirements. Membership includes: Senior Citizen residents; adult residents with children in the school system; and adult residents with no children in the school system.

The Financial Advisory Committee assists in the review and understanding of the financial considerations necessary to the operation of the Village and the Village’s preparation of the Annual and Capital Budgets; provides review, advice and recommendations to the Village Council on Village financial and budgetary matters; and prepares an annual report for the Village Council to assist the Councilmembers in their budget preparation. Members will preferably have strong finance, accounting, government and/or business backgrounds.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment hears variance applications and appeals from rulings and determinations arising from the enforcement of Village zoning ordinances.

All interested residents should fill out a Citizen Volunteer Leadership form (found on the Village website), and send it along with a cover letter indicating on which board(s) the resident wishes to serve, and a biography or resume to:

IRS Inquisition Update: IRS Targets some Jewish groups for political reasons

Along with targeting tea-party groups, the IRS may also have given extra-special attention to the tax-exempt status of some Jewish groups for political reasons.

From the Jewish Press:

The passionately pro-Israel organization Z STREET filed a lawsuit against the IRS, claiming it had been told by an IRS agent that because the organization was “connected to Israel,” its application for tax-exempt status would receive additional scrutiny.  This admission was made in response to a query about the lengthy reveiw of Z STREET’s tax exempt status application.

In addition, the IRS agent told a Z STREET representative that the applications of some of those Israel-related organizations have been assigned to “a special unit in the D.C. office to determine whether the organization’s activities contradict the Administration’s public policies.” . .

Mother’s Day Essay Contest Winner From Carousel Cakes

Carousel Cakes is a family owned business, located in Nanuet, NY, founded in 1965 by Martin Lefkowitz, selling over 40 different varieties of cakes. Their Red Velvet Cupcake was named one of Oprah’s Favorite Things in “O” Magazine. This family bakery did it again when Oprah chose their new Blue Velvet Cake to be on her December 2012 “O” List.

This year. Carousel Cakes ran an essay contest called the “Cake for my Wonderful Mother Contest”. They asked entrants to write an essay about how their mother inspired them.

This was a theme that we saw running through all of these essays. It was very difficult to choose a winner. Some of us were in tears as we read through them. We ended up giving a little something to everyone who entered.”

Ridgewood NJ, New Jersey Executive Order No. 131 — Ordering all State buildings to fly flags at half-staff on Friday, May 10, 2013 to honor the service and sacrifice of United States Marine Staff Sergeant Eric Christian, who grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York and Ramsey, New Jersey, and graduated from Ramsey High School, where he held several records in football. Staff Sergeant Christian tragically lost his life while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Whistle blown on Benghazi

Government whistle-blowers on Wednesday choked back tears as they offered stark criticism of the administration’s handling of the terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

One witness faulted the State Department’s review of the attack — saying it appeared aimed at protecting higher-ranking officials.

A second witness said United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice’s remarks blaming the attack on an anti-Islam film were shocking and offended the Libyan government.

Former Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory Hicks told lawmakers on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee that the film was unrelated to the attack. He said the comments frustrated Libyan officials, causing them to purposefully block for 17 days the FBI from entering the country to investigate the attack.

“I was stunned, my jaw dropped and I was embarrassed,” Hicks said of Rice’s remarks.

Cyberattacks a growing irritant in US-China ties

BEIJING  — Signs are growing that the sustained surge in cyberattacks emanating from China is imperiling its relations with the U.S., lending urgency to fledgling efforts by both governments to engage on the issue.

The Pentagon this week said China appeared to be cyberspying against the U.S. government, the first time it has made such an assertion in its annual report on Chinese military power. A bill introduced in the Senate on Tuesday would require the president to block imports of products using stolen U.S. technology or made by companies implicated in computer theft.

Washington’s sudden focus on Chinese hacking comes after rising complaints from U.S. businesses about theft of trade secrets. Amid growing evidence that the People’s Liberation Army and other state-backed groups are behind the infiltrations, Beijing’s statements that the cyberhacking allegations are groundless — repeated anew Wednesday by the Chinese Defense Ministry — are being broadly dismissed.
