State Senator Michael Testa says Increase in Shore Wages Will Directly Impact Local Property Taxes

Trenton NJ, State Senator Michael L. Testa, Jr. expressed concern about the increase in the state’s minimum wage that went into effect on January 1.

The hourly rate will increase to $11 per hour from the current $10, and seasonal workers and employees at businesses with less than six workers will see their pay bump from $8.35 to $10.30.

“This increase comes at a significant risk,” cautioned Testa (R-01). “Higher business expenses will result in higher prices for consumers, but the news can be even worse for employees. Mandatory hikes to minimum wage have been linked to reduced hours and job opportunities for low-skilled workers. The people who least can afford it will be hurt the most.

NJ Tax Preparer Admits Conspiring To Commit Tax Fraud Thru False Filing of 1099’s

NEWARK NJ, An Essex County, New Jersey, tax preparer today admitted her role in conspiring to defraud the IRS and filing false personal tax returns for a New Jersey business owner and two other individuals, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Zenobia Williams, 52, of Maplewood, New Jersey, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Kevin McNulty in Newark federal court to one count of conspiring to defraud the IRS by reporting false business expenses on the business owner’s tax return to fraudulently reduce his tax liability and by reporting those sham expenses as income on two other individuals’ tax returns to obtain unwarranted refunds for them.

Ridgewood Residents Collect Food for St. Paul’s, Paterson Food Pantry

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood residents collected extra holiday edibles (wrapped~unopened and not requiring refrigeration) that you might not want – fruitcake, specialty crackers, candies, cookies, nuts, trail mix – please consider giving it to the St. Paul’s, Paterson Food Pantry. The clients there would love to have some specialty treats to go along with the pasta, rice, and canned foods that are the mainstays of their diets. I know this is the time of year when we are all overstuffed, when the New Year’s Resolutions are getting ready to kick in, and when many of us have some such treats that are likely not to be consumed.

The food was delivered to We brought all of yesterday’s donations to the  St. Paul’s Paterson Food Pantry .Mr. Vito Bari, branch manager of the Blue Foundry Bank at 55 North Broad Street, presented a $1500 donation from the bank to the St. Paul’s Paterson Food Pantry. The Pantry Manager, Kimberly Arias, was overwhelmed. This very generous contribution will go a long way toward helping keep the shelves stocked at the Pantry, which is just minutes from Ridgewood.

Twitter Threat Has Edgewater Man Facing Serious Jail Time

Edgewater NJ, the US Department of Homeland Security arrested an Edgewater man they said threatened to kill Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in social media posts. Carlos Alejandro Tariche, 22, was charged on December 20 with one count of interstate communications containing threats to injure. Court documents stated that Tariche posted, “We need to kill all ICE agents,” to one of his Twitter accounts on December 11. He is also accused of questioning why mass shootings do not occur at ICE buildings and quoting a phrase regarding murdering people popularized by a recently released film. Investigators located Tariche by examining his social media accounts to determine where he was logging in. He faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Ridgewood NJ, Along with hitting the gym more often and starting a diet, quitting smoking tops many New Year’s resolution lists. There are 873,600 smokers in New Jersey and more than 63% tried to quit last year. New ads from e-cigarettes companies would have those smokers falsely believe that switching to vaping is quitting smoking. The American Lung Association is reminding Pennsylvanians that the Food and Drug Administration has not found any e-cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit.

Glen Rock NJ, The DPW will begin curbside Christmas tree pickup on Thursday, January 2, 2020. Residents asked to place their evergreen trees ONLY at curbside for daily pickups, until the deadline of January 17th, 2020. Please do not place trees in plastic bags, and make sure there are no foreign objects on the trees such as lighting, garland, decorations, etc. If you have any additional decorating items such as wreaths, garland, etc., which have wiring &/or metal fasteners, please place those items in ordinary household trash for regularly scheduled north/east & south/west collections.

Single Family Home Sustains Significant Damage in Glen Rock Fire

Glen Rock NJ, A defective/overheated bathroom exhaust fan was reportedly the cause of a multiple alarm house fire on Oxford Place in Glen Rock, Friday morning, 12/27. Glen Rock Fire Department was assisted in extinguishing the conflagration by fire personnel from numerous neighboring municipalities. At least one (1) firefighter was reported to have been injured fighting the blaze. The single family home sustained extensive fire, smoke, and water damage. Ridgewood Fire Department  “A” Shift responded mutual aid to Glen Rock for the working attic fire. Glen Rock Police and Ridgewood Police also assisted .

New Jersey Resident Sentenced For Threatening To Murder A United States Congressman And His Staff

Millville NJ,  A New Jersey resident was sentenced yesterday to 87 months in prison for threatening to murder former U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo and members of the congressman’s staff, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced.

Joseph Brodie, 40, of Millville, New Jersey, was previously convicted in Camden federal court on two counts of making threats to officials, officers and employees of the United States – specifically, for a telephone threat to murder LoBiondo’s chief of staff and an email threat to murder LoBiondo, his chief of staff, his veterans affairs liaison, and all of the other staff of the Mays Landing office. During the sentencing hearing yesterday, the Court determined that over the course of the prosecution, Brodie had obstructed justice and that there also was evidence to show he had intended to carry out his threats.
