Paramus Police : Seat Belt Enforcement and Education Campaign to be Conducted Locally as Part of Nationwide Click It or Ticket Mobilization May 21 – June 3, 2018

Paramus NJ, Law enforcement officers from the Paramus Police Department will join with police from around the country in cracking down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national “Click it or Ticket” campaign.
Beginning May 21 and running through June 3, the annual “Click It or Ticket” national mobilization utilizes high visibility seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, in combination with local and national publicity efforts, to reiterate the life-saving value of seat belts.

“Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,” said Gary Poedubicky, Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “In 2016, it is estimated that more than 14,500 lives were saved nationally by the proper use of seat belts.”

Poedubicky added that a key focus of this year’s campaign is to promote seat belt usage by adults in all seating positions in the vehicle, both front AND rear seats. The front seat belt usage rate in New Jersey currently stands at 94.07%. However, adults riding in rear seats are buckling up at a significantly lower rate, only 48% in the most recent survey. “For whatever reason there seems to be a disconnect with people feeling they don’t need to buckle up when riding as a passenger in rear seats, and this is a concern,” he said.

During the 2017 “Click it or Ticket” campaign, 350 New Jersey police agencies participated in the two-week initiative. As a result of the effort, law enforcement officers issued 17,792 seat belt citations, 6,363 speeding summonses and made 976 impaired driving arrests.

MONROE TOWNSHIP NJ, in an interesting turn of events Senate President Steve Sweeney today told business leaders that major changes in New Jersey’s fiscal policy and government structure are needed to make the state competitive and affordable, and vowed that the Legislature’s leadership will have the political will to make the necessary changes.

Seems that years of running the state into the ground has taken its tool ,“We cannot tax our way out of this fiscal crisis,” Senator Sweeney (D-Gloucester) said at a New Jersey Business and Industry Association forum. “The problems we face – from pensions to school funding, from health care costs to property taxes – are deep-rooted and complex, and the solutions are politically difficult. But I promise you that we will have the political will on a bipartisan basis to make the changes we need to make New Jersey competitive and affordable.”

Senator Sweeney praised the ongoing efforts of the economists, academics and tax policy experts serving on the Economic and Fiscal Policy Working Group he convened under the bipartisan leadership of Senate Budget Chair Paul Sarlo (D-Bergen), Senator Steve Oroho (R-Sussex) and Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) to find solutions to the state’s long-term fiscal crisis. Assembly Budget Chair Eliana Pintor-Marin (D-Essex) and Senators Anthony Bucco Sr. (R-Morris) and Dawn Addiego (R-Burlington) are also serving on the panel.

“This initiative grew out of our concern over the impact of the federal tax law, which unfairly targets high-cost states like New Jersey by virtually eliminating the personal income tax deduction for state and local income, property and sales taxes,” said Senator Sweeney. “We are doing everything we can to reduce the impact, including developing legislation to enable S corporations, LLCs and partnerships to pay the state income tax liabilities of their owners and partners. These businesses will be able to deduct $35 billion in taxes as a result of our work.

“But we realize that it isn’t enough to just respond to the federal tax law. We have to do more – a lot more. Our panel will be coming out with a series of recommendations that will bolster our underfunded pension systems, control health care costs, hold down property taxes and ensure that government services are delivered with efficiency and cost-effectiveness at the level of government that makes the most sense.”

Senator Sweeney said the panel is undertaking a long-overdue examination of the adequacy, fairness and competitiveness of New Jersey’s state and local tax structure, and benchmarking New Jersey tax levels against other states.
“We are committed to making New Jersey competitive and affordable in order to attract jobs and businesses, bolster housing values and make our state a desirable location for millennials to create start-ups, for young families to choose to raise their children, and for senior citizens to retire.”

Westwood Swears in New Jersey’s Youngest Council Member

Westwood NJ,  Westwood’s newest council member Alyssa Kaye Dawson, at 24 is New Jersey’s youngest councilwoman . Alyssa Dawson, a former staffer to LG Kim Guadagno was sworn-in tonight to a council seat in Westwood to succeed retiring Councilman Peter Grefrath a 23 year veteran to the Borough of Westwood . Dawson had announced her candidacy to run for Council in November alongside incumbent Ray Arroyo last month.

Former Westwood council members, Ingrid Quinn, Cindy Waneck, Jay Sciara and Bill Phayre came to the meeting to say thank you along with former LG Kim Guadagno and assemblywomen Holly Schepisi.

Ho Ho kus NJ, According to the  Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department , at approximately 16:52 hours Department 7 responded to a residence on Bernard Place for a fallen tree onto a house and vehicle with an occupant trapped inside the vehicle. Arriving units advised live wires were involved and reported access problems to the trapped occupant. PSE&G was dispatched before rescue operations could begin. Once power was secured to the area companies extricated the occupant who was transferred to the care of EMS with non-life threatening injuries. The home involved suffered extensive structural damage. Ridgewood NJ, The Village of Ridgewood Health Department would like to remind residents that 2018 dog license renewals are due during the month of June. A $20 late fee will be charged for all renewals received after June 30, 2018.
The Ridgewood FREE dog rabies clinic and micro chipping event will be held on Wednesday, May 16 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Graydon Pool Parking Lot on Northern Parkway.
The health department will be sending renewals notices via email. If you do not have an email address please call our office and request a renewal to be mailed to you. Renewal applications may also be obtained by visiting our website at www.ridgewoodnj.net or coming in person to the Ridgewood Health Department, 131 North Maple Ave. The office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. Please call 201 670-5500 ext. 502 with questions.
New Jersey law requires owners of all dogs seven months of age or older to be registered with the town where they live. In order for the license to be issued, the owner must present proof that a licensed veterinarian has vaccinated the dog against rabies and that the duration of immunity from that vaccination does not expire before May 1, 2019. To receive the discount for a spayed or neutered pet, proof must also be provided.

Ridgewood NJ, The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors last night appointed William Viqueira as the agency’s new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Treasurer and Jacqueline Stamford as the Deputy Treasurer. Viqueira’s appointment will be effective as of Monday, May 14, 2018. Stamford assumes Deputy Treasurer duties immediately.

“During Bill’s two decades in corporate finance, he has worked as an investment banker, CFO, business owner and head of mergers and acquisitions,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Kevin Corbett. “With his experience and commitment to public service, Bill will be a great addition to the leadership of the nation’s largest statewide public transportation system. Jacqueline, meanwhile, is a consummate professional who has spent two decades managing cash and banking activities for NJ TRANSIT. I look forward to working closely with Bill and Jackie to develop and improve our customer-focused business processes.”

William Viqueira has more than twenty years of experience in corporate finance, including ten years as an investment banker with Merrill Lynch and seven years with Lucent Technologies, where he served as Treasurer and head of Mergers & Acquisitions. Viqueira previously held the position of Chief Financial Officer at both venture-backed and NYSE-listed companies, and was Senior Vice-President for Finance and Development at Monster Worldwide. In addition, he owned and established his own franchise restaurant.

Viqueira, who holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Economics from The Johns Hopkins University, has served on numerous advisory boards and public committees.

A second-generation Cuban-American, Viqueira grew up in Union City, New Jersey; he currently resides in Maplewood.

Jacqueline Stamford is a Certified Treasury Professional with 25 years of experience in treasury, cash management, investment management, banking and budgeting. She began her career at NJ TRANSIT in 1995 as a Senior Financial Analyst working her way up to Manager of Investments & Analysis, Director of Treasury Operations & Investment Analysis and Acting Senior Director of Corporate Cash Management.

Stamford, who also has experience in the banking industry, has actively managed NJ TRANSIT’s cash and banking activities for 22 years. Most recently, she has worked with internal and external partners to manage the agency’s cash flow and collaborate with financial partners to identify efficiencies and savings while ensuring the financial assets of NJ TRANSIT are safeguarded.

Stamford is a graduate of Rutgers Graduate School of Management where she received a Masters’ of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance; she earned a Bachelors’ degree in Economics from Hofstra University.

NJ TRANSIT’s current Interim Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, Michael Lihvarcik, is retiring at the end of May.

The Village of Ridgewood Will Start Offering Free Public WiFi Around the Village

Ridgewood NJ, Through the collaboration of the Parks Recreation & Conservation Board (PRCB) and the Villge of Ridgewood IT Department, the Village will start offering free WiFi at certain public locations. It will be first rolled out at Graydon Pool and The Stable in early June. The Village is currently working on other locations including Van Neste Square Memorial Park which is located in the heart of our Central Business District.

Whether you are a novice gardener or have years of experience, you’ll enjoy these unique public and private gardens in Ridgewood and the historic Cheelcroft section of Ho-Ho-Kus. Not to be missed – the historic James Rose House and Garden. Constructed in 1953 on an area half the size of a tennis court, Rose described his home as a “tiny village;” a composite of three buildings for himself, his mother and his sister. Here Rose created a unique work of art fusing modern sculpture, architecture and landscape into a single unified place for living. Before his death in 1991, Rose planned the establishment of The James Rose Center for Landscape Architectural Research and Design – a living demonstration of his approach to design as a never-ending process of change and development. The Center now serves as the headquarters of a non-profit educational foundation. The entry fee is being generously waived by the Center for our ticket holders.

Tickets are now on sale at Backyard Living, Bookends and Mango Jam in Ridgewood. Maps are included on the ticket. All tickets must be picked up at the Ridgewood Public Library on Saturday, June 2nd from 10am to 1pm OR Sunday, June 3rd from 9am to 3pm.

NJ Division of Elections Reminds Citizens of Upcoming May 15 Deadline to Register to Vote for the June 5 Primary Election

Ridgewood NJ,  The New Jersey Division of Elections wishes to remind citizens of the upcoming deadline to register to vote for the upcoming primary election ahead of the June 5 primary election.

The deadline to register to vote in the June 5 primary election is Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Applications are available at county and municipal offices as well as online at the Division of Elections website: nj.gov/state/elections.

The voter registration applications downloaded from the website must be mailed to the County Commissioner of Registration/Superintendent of Elections in the resident’s home county or to the Division of Elections, as an original signature is required. Applications submitted by mail must be postmarked by May 15.

To register to vote in New Jersey you must be: a United States citizen, at least 17 years old, and understand that you may not vote until reaching the age of 18, a resident of the county for 30 days before the election and you are not currently serving a sentence, probation or parole because of a felony conviction.

New Jersey’s primary election law allows unaffiliated voters to select a party when voting in the Primary Election. However, voters registered as Democrats can only vote in the Democratic primary and voters registered as Republicans can only vote in the Republican primary.

Cardinale Bill Calling for Congressional Assistance in Funding Positive Train Control Systems Moves Forward

Ridgewood NJ, The Senate Transportation Committee passed legislation sponsored by Senator Gerry Cardinale (R-39) which encourages the federal government to assist with implementing Positive Train Control (PTC) technology on New Jersey railways.

“By repeatedly underfunding large scale train safety projects, Congress is placing the lives of New Jerseyans at risk,” Cardinale said. “With technological advances that remove human error, such as positive train control, we are able to safeguard passengers and our communities from future train derailments and crashes.”

Positive Train Control (PTC) is a safety system designed to automatically stop a train. It has the ability to prevent accidents like collisions and derailments by slowing the train without input from an engineer on board, removing the possible human error.

On average, 2 million passengers are transported by NJ Transit’s train and light rail systems each week.

Cardinale’s legislation, SJR-12, urges the federal government to take decisive and swift measures to assist with the implementation of positive train control technology on New Jersey railways.

Additionally, the bill requests, if necessary, to extend the deadline for the installation of positive train control technology.

As of December 31, 2017, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) noted in a letter to NJ Transit that the FRA was concerned that NJ Transit would not meet the December 31, 2018 deadline. NJ Transit has only installed required hardware on 35 of the 440 locomotives in the NJ Transit fleet and had only trained 143 of 1,100 employees on the new system.

“We pay a high price by failing to implement this lifesaving train technology, as we saw with the crash in Hoboken,” Cardinale added. “Today, we continue our efforts to encourage Congress to deliver the necessary funding to provide the safest ride possible for our commuters. ”

The legislation now heads to the full Senate for a vote.
