July 4th in Ridgewood is a very special day that our entire area looks forward to all year. This
year’s theme is “Celebrate the Constitution.” The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration
Committee is an all-volunteer community group that coordinates the day’s events and does not
receive direct funding from the Village of Ridgewood.

We are actively preparing for what we know will be a spectacular celebration, and it is vital that
we have community support. Please consider helping to “Support the Tradition”. Because of
generous support from the community, we have one of the best small town Independence Day
celebrations.

While the Parade is free, Fireworks Tickets are required for entrance to Veterans Field.
Donations for Fireworks Tickets are one of the Celebration’s largest sources of income.
Ticket sales cover the evening entertainment which begins at 6:00pm, the fireworks at
dark, as well as the bands in the parade, additional security and traffic control. Come
early and enjoy some great entertainment.

For many years the cost of our tickets remained the same while our costs increased.
This year we have increased our ticket prices. It was a decision that the Committee did
reluctantly in the face of rising costs. To keep the ticket prices as reasonable as possible
for attendees, while covering costs, pre-sales of tickets are being made available through a
wide range of local businesses.

Tickets to the Evening Entertainment and Fireworks will be on sale June 1 at the
locations below. Buy your tickets in advance for $8.00 and save over 50% off the
gate price of $15.00.

Veterans Field. Approach Veterans Field on Linwood Avenue from the east. Turn left onto
Northern Parkway. Turn right into the parking lot. There are 20 spaces available on a first-
come, first-serve basis. A police officer will be posted there to direct you. Those who park in the
handicap spaces will not have access to their cars during the fireworks due to the location of the

The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration began in 1910 when the local papers, the civic
section of the Woman’s Club and the Ridgewood Fire Department joined forces to create
a “safe and sane” holiday with an emphasis on Patriotism. It has grown into one of the largest
celebrations in the New York City area and has been featured on CNN and Good Morning
America as well as local New York stations. The celebration was once again named Best Parade
and Fireworks by the readers of 201 Magazine.

Tax-exempt hospitals (each a “hospital” and, collectively, “hospitals”), and their affiliated tax-exempt faculty or physician practices if applicable, may face concern about retaining their tax-exempt status in the face of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Actand other changes to tax-exemption requirements. This article provides background, considerations and recommendations for a hospital to consider in maintaining its tax-exempt status, including the following core suggestions:

Take steps to develop a rebuttable presumption that all compensation relationships are reasonable;
Follow the tax-exemption requirements imposed by PPACA, now codified at Section 501(r) of the Internal Revenue Code (discussed in Section 2 below);

Provide, document and review the charitable benefits and charity care the hospital provides to the community on an annual basis;

Publicize the hospital’s willingness to accept Medicare and Medicaid patients and its services available to indigent patients;

and Ensure that any money allocated for community benefit purposes is utilized for activities that actually provide a community benefit, such as research or education of health professionals. The hospital should likely, however, do more than simply allocate certain funds to assure that it can defend that it properly serves community purposes.

Hospitals, as a starting point to assess community benefit, should be aware that case law, particularly state case law, suggests that if the value of charitable services provided each year is 1 percent or less of gross revenues, then the amount of community benefit is not adequate. [1] Under federal law, no specific percentage has been mandated. An IRS study recently found that of the hospitals it surveyed, on average, approximately 9 percent of revenue was spent on community benefit. Twenty percent of hospitals surveyed reported total community benefit spending of less than 2 percent of revenue. In addition, nearly 60 percent of the hospitals surveyed provided less than or equal to 5 percent of revenue on uncompensated care. Similarly, a 2006 Congressional Budget Office report found that non-profit hospitals devoted approximately 5 percent of total revenues to uncompensated care. Thus, it appears that dedicating 3-7 percent of revenue on a variety of community benefit and charity care activities is likely adequate.

Ridgewood NJ -Overcast sky’s did not keep the crowds away from the Spring Ridgewood Sidewalk sale  and the Earth Day celebration in Van Neste Square . Parking was scarce for the first time in ages whiles shoppers lined the streets looking for deals . Shoppers spilled over  from East. Ridgewood Ave. and Oak Street to most of the central business district or downtown Ridgewood .

Some new stores and resaturates look to be making a go at it while some old favorites remain steadfast. It does seem the Village is about to be over run by Sushi places with empty stores boasting to become  next home of a Sushi this or Sushi that.

The Ridgewood Police Department keep a careful eye on pedestrian crossing and most drives seemed to be taking time and laying off their cell phones and lipstick. Dare we say the revival of the down town shopping district maybe well on its way of coarse only time will tell whether the crowds were buyers or lookers .

Community activists in St. Louis became concerned a couple of years ago that local banks weren’t offering credit to the city’s poor and African American residents. So they formed a group called the St. Louis Equal Housing and Community Reinvestment Alliance and began writing complaint letters to federal regulators.

Apparently, someone in Washington took notice. The Federal Reserve has cited one of the group’s targets, Midwest BankCentre, a small bank that has been operating in St. Louis’s predominantly white, middle-class suburbs for over a century, for failing to issue home mortgages or open branches in disadvantaged areas. Although executives at the bank say they don’t discriminate, Midwest BankCentre’s latest annual report says it is in the process of negotiating a settlement with the U.S. Justice Dept. over its lending practices.

The program supports all the major district initiatives including: Handwriting Without Tears, Envision Math and Words Their Way. Classes meet twice per week. There is no co-op requirement for parents who enroll children in Kindergarten Enrichment.

A nonsectarian school, The Co-op offers morning and afternoon classes for 2, 3 and 4-year-olds, as well as Kindergarten Enrichment. The seasoned, professional teaching staff guides students toward social, emotional and physical well-being. Children learn and play in an environment ideally suited to their needs as developing individuals. The program encourages independence, self-discipline and a love for school. Setting the school apart from other nursery schools, The Co-op is organized and run by parents, which enables them to actively participate in their child’s early learning experience. Music, physical education, field trips, indoor and outdoor play time and an in-house library are just a few of the experiences to which the children are exposed as supplements to the daily education plans.

There are one or two teachers in every school who should be teaching somewhere else. That is not the biggest problem facing the Ridgewood Schools.

The problem in this town is that administration is not accountable. They come up with programs and ideas that don’t always work. It takes them years to respond to their mistakes. Remember “writing to read”? Connected math will eventally be replaced with a better program, but it will be too late for many of the kids to catch up to where they should be. It is educational malpractice.

There was an article in the Ridgewood News about BF placing a suggested time limit on homework. That is not the solution. The problem is that kids leave class not understanding the work. In a normal math program they would have a text book to refer back to. Connected math does not have a text book and kids are left to Google their homework questions. The program is confusing and there is no book. That is the problem. Stressed out kids spending a lot of time trying to figure out the homework is just a symptom. I know of 6 kids in my daughter’s class who have gotten tutors this year(What would the number be if all of the parents had been asked about this?). This is an outrage! It is time to face up to the real problems in our math program. How many years does it take for the school to reevaluate and make the necessary changes??
