Ridgewood NJ, the Village of Ridgewood is once again promoting Slow Mow May .The goal of Slow Mow May is to embrace a two-week mowing regime (and forego chemicals for the entire month), which supports the greatest abundance of bees by creating habitat and food sources for early-season pollinators. It’s a small but important step toward making our yards more natural, environmentally friendly and healthier for people, pets and pollinators.

The benefits of reducing the frequency that lawns are mowed include:

  • Increased habitat for pollinators and wildlife
  • Cutting down on pollution and reducing CO2 emissions
  • Making yards safer for children and pets by reducing the amount of harsh chemicals (pesticides and herbicides) used on our lawns
  • Promoting sustainable landscapes for healthier neighborhoods
  • Creating a safe environment for learning and observation
  • Showing solidarity that you care about our environment and our Village

Interested in participating in Slow Mow May Ridgewood? All you need to do is sign up here and watch your lawn become an optimum environment for pollinators.

There is some downside to Slow Mow May.

While Slow Mow May aims to promote environmentally friendly practices and support pollinators like bees, there are potential disadvantages to adopting this approach:

  1. Aesthetic Concerns: Some homeowners may prioritize a neat and well-manicured lawn over the natural look encouraged by Slow Mow May. Allowing grass to grow longer and potentially become unkempt may not align with their aesthetic preferences.
  2. Increased Pest Habitat: Longer grass can provide habitat for pests such as ticks and mosquitoes, which may pose health risks to humans and pets. This can be a concern, especially in areas where these pests are prevalent.
  3. Weed Growth: Allowing grass to grow longer may also create opportunities for weed growth. Weeds can compete with grass for resources and detract from the overall appearance of the lawn.
  4. Property Value: A lawn that appears overgrown or unkempt may lower the curb appeal and potentially the property value of a home, particularly in neighborhoods where well-maintained lawns are the norm.
  5. Local Regulations: Some municipalities have regulations or homeowner association rules that mandate lawn maintenance standards. Participating in Slow Mow May could potentially lead to violations or fines if these standards are not met.
  6. Allergy Concerns: Longer grass can produce more pollen, which may exacerbate allergies for some individuals.
  7. Potential Spread of Disease: Depending on local conditions, longer grass may be more susceptible to fungal diseases, which can spread and damage the lawn.

While Slow Mow May has its advantages in promoting biodiversity and reducing chemical use, homeowners should consider these potential disadvantages and assess whether this approach aligns with their preferences, local regulations, and practical considerations for lawn care.

  1. Thanks for making it a bette place for us ticks. We will show our gratitude with Lyme diseases babesiosis, tularemia , Rocky Mountain spotted fever and others . If anyone had a brain they would know that pollination is from bees that like flowers, not overgrown lawns that look unkept. Whoever came up with this dumb idea should do some research. MRLLS is accurate

    1. We have enough bees?!?!

Can an apiologist confirm, please, that Ridgewood is suffering from a surfeit of BEES????

  4. I’m cutting every 4 days.

  5. And yet I bet many of those screeching over PFAS and cancer-causing artificial turf don’t think twice about slathering their own precious lawns in pesticides.

    1. Please take a break from your typing to go have a nice tall glass of municpal PFAS water and invite PFAS Paulie over too. Makes great lemonade or iced tea!

      1. I hope PFAS Paulie is at least paying market rate rent for all the space he takes up in your head.

  6. This BS comes from the same people who support turf. Majority of them have major logic issues and love to be fed any type of propaganda.

  9. It’s all bullshit. They probably don’t want us to cut so they have less yard waste to pick up. Screw that I’m cutting weed whacking edging trimming pick up my yard waste

  10. Wait – we’ve gone from “No Mo May” to “Slow Mow May”? Sounds like the local progressives are hedging.

    1. Don’t throw me in that briar patch!

  11. When you let the grass grow long, there are many animals that are hiding in the tall grass. Baby deer wait for the momma deer to come back to get them while they are out getting food for the babies. Then someone goes and weed whacks and whammo. Bunnies and other animals too. I can’t believe people in this town can advocate for this and talk to their kids about great this is for the environment and them push turf on those same children all the while knowing that it is toxic for humans AND the environment/climate. Organic gardening is real just like eating organic food is an option for people, they just need to get educated. Plastic grass is wrong and should be banned.

    1. Post of the day!

  13. Yes, get out there and mow, you bourgeois rotters. Your illusion of control must be maintained at all costs; the phenomenal conspicuous waste of resources just to maintain a bland and unproductive patch of Barbie Dream House turf that’s much nicer than your schmuck neighbor’s.

  14. There’s a lot of yard waste out there in my neighborhood, all my neighbors are cutting cleaning up around the house get out there and clean up your property.

  15. What hypocrisy! “No Mo May” to “Slow Mow May” but every other month let’s clear cut Schedler and continue to serve the public with the highest toxic water in the country. How about NO MO BS?!!!!
