Major Drug Bust on NJ Turnpike
According to the Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, officers were tipped off that Edwin Vargas was allegedly transporting a large quantity of narcotics into Hamilton Township near the Woodrow Wilson Service Area. Acting on this information, authorities launched a surveillance operation and later conducted a traffic stop on Tuesday, February 11, at 11:30 a.m.
K-9 Unit Uncovers Hidden Drugs
During the stop, a K-9 unit named Indy alerted officers to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle’s center console. A subsequent search uncovered a hydraulic trap containing approximately one kilogram of suspected heroin—a haul valued at $32,000 on the street.
Suspect Facing Multiple Charges
Following the discovery, Vargas was detained and charged with multiple first-degree narcotics offenses. Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey confirmed the arrest and emphasized the importance of law enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
