Newark NJ, on Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initiated an investigation into whether Boeing failed to ensure its aircraft adhered to safety regulations, following the recent midair blowout of a panel on one of its planes. The FAA formally notified Boeing of the investigation, expressing concern that the incident should not have occurred and emphasizing the need to prevent its recurrence.
Last Friday, an Alaska Airlines flight encountered an “explosive decompression” when a fuselage panel on the Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft detached shortly after departing from Portland, Oregon. This incident prompted the FAA to temporarily ground approximately 171 Boeing 737 Max 9 models operated by U.S. airlines. Alaska Airlines, responding to safety inspection delays, announced the cancellation of all flights with the Boeing 737 Max 9 through Saturday.
Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun acknowledged the “mistake” and emphasized transparency in addressing the issue, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also investigating, exploring the possibility of missing bolts that were intended to secure the panel. Jennifer Homendy, chair of the NTSB, noted a prior warning light for a pressurization problem on the affected plane during three previous flights.
