Ridgewood NJ, what once stood as a lush, thriving ecosystem in Ridgewood’s Schedler Park has been reduced to a barren, fragmented landscape. A green canopy that once offered shade, purified the air, and supported wildlife has been destroyed—intentionally—by our local government. What’s left is not just a park stripped of its natural beauty but also a dumping ground for contaminated soil.

This devastation extends beyond the physical loss; it reflects a troubling disregard for environmental stewardship and the long-term benefits of preserving nature.

This Isn’t About a Ball Field

At its core, this is not a debate about recreational facilities or development—it’s about protecting our community’s green spaces. These vital areas provide more than aesthetic value; they preserve biodiversity, combat climate change, and contribute to a healthier environment for all residents.

The destruction of Schedler Park symbolizes a broader trend of recklessness, one that prioritizes short-term convenience over the enduring benefits of environmental responsibility.

Why It Matters

Our green spaces are invaluable. They act as sanctuaries for wildlife, mitigate climate impacts, and offer mental and physical health benefits to the community. Protecting them is not a luxury but a necessity for future generations in Ridgewood.

  1. At its core it is NIMBY cloaked in environmental policy. A very small but vocal group of residents will have access to the recreational facilities of the town but not in their neighborhood.

I lived near an elementary school in town and it was wonderful for my growing family to be able to walk to school, sports and have fields to play on. Recreational Isolation is not healthy.

  2. Why is the petition asking for [ (i) a full assessment of the impact that would result from any changes to the plan; and (ii) a fact-based analysis of the comprehensive impact on the Village and the State of New Jersey made by the development of the Schedler property ] instead of demanding that the plan be scrapped? They could abide by the petition and still go through with plans.

  3. sell it

  4. An apartment complex overseeing the beautiful RT17 river would be best fit for the space. Thats what happens when you vote 70% for leftist morons.

  5. wait wait wait, i thought they were complaining about an existing turf field. Are they really trying to do this there at this park? Thats messed up makes no sense to have a turf field so close to 17 and from that picture from 2007, that park looked very healthy. Now its messed up. I always wondered what was goin over there it looked different from when I was younger. What was the purpose? To dump contaminated soil there? Wow, destroying our ecosystem. I don not support this, no way! Lets take back the park and open it back up to the deer and wildlife! Lets take our land back from these crooked people.

  6. Come on people- it’s a piece of land that borders Rt.17…this is not Yellowstone. Either put a turf field on it or build low income housing and get the state of our backs. Your pick.

To talk about “thriving ecosystems” on Rt. 17 is kind of comical.

    1. You’re right. Trees, deer, and hawks are stupid. We don’t need green space.

And that’s why Ridgewood looks more and more like a cheezy Jersey joke town with each passing year.

But don’t despair: by the time the NJ DEP is done bankrupting the Village on remediation for Schedler and Habernickel, to say nothing of the other eco “surprises” soon to emerge, this council will be a distant memory, PFAS Paulie will be selling gyros in Florida, and the 2018 plan will be restored when all is said and done.

      1. And that cheap Jersey joke will keep staring back at you in the mirror. If Ridgewood looks like a joke, that has more to do with the clowns who live in it, rather than any lack of trees.

  7. And what is the mayor council and manager doing regarding possible health risk too the employees who worked at that location. Still nothing, did the attorney tell them to keep a tight lip. It sure seems that way, we don’t know as of yesterday the DEP has all the names of employees who worked at that location. Yes, the private investigator that’s working for the attorney has a list of names. It’s a real shame that the village is not doing their part.
    The mayor
    The ex-mayor
    The council
    X Council members
    The manager
    The ex manager
    The health department
    The DEP
The contractor working for the village
    The union
And a few employees, this is the list they should be ashamed of themselves for not doing their job.
Is it interesting that everything that I mentioned has came true.

  8. And what about the director of engineering he should’ve known that soil wasn’t tested. How does this individual still have his job. He must have a lot of car fun to say on the village, talk about blackmail just amazing. He should lose his engineering license.

  9. Excuse me thumbs down you must be a management or political figure which is it.
If you had any kind of couth, you would reach out to me and have a conversation you know where this is.
    Don’t you .

  10. These comments and blog posts aren’t helping. Vagianos was reelected despite all the education through blog and Facebook. He controls the village now with his four puppet council members, puppet village manager and shall I say the spineless village clerk and attorney.

    1. Who cares. He is still a piece of garbage and many people know he has zero skills required to run a village let a lone make a dried meat sandwich. Obviously failing at both. Resoidents are still prepared to fight this ridiculous plan and you just never know where it will end up.

      1. Any news on the Schedler State Historical Signage being vandalized and ripped down over the weekend?

Word is an investigation is under way.

Given the millions of dollars already spent, and the millions of dollars still to follow, the town has to have cameras installed.

        Right?
