Ridgewood NJ, wondering what is happening in Ukraine? Or why? Anastasia Bard, a Ukrainian-American Ridgewood resident with 20 years’ experience as an investigative journalist, answers questions about the current conflict, describes life under military siege for Ukrainian civilians, and explores possible reasons why two countries with so much in common could be at war. Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest country by area in Europe after Russia, which it borders to the east and north-east. Ukraine also shares borders with Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the west; Romania and Moldova to the south; and has a coastline along the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. In July 1990 a declaration of sovereignty was passed by the Ukrainian parliament, and in August 1991 Ukraine was declared to be independent of the Soviet Union. Leonid Kravchuk became the first president of Ukraine in December 1991.
