West Milford NJ, the Jennings Creek wildfire continues to blaze through rugged terrain in Passaic County, NJ, and into Orange County, NY, as firefighters work tirelessly to contain the flames. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has teamed up with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation Division of Forest Protection and Fire Management in a unified command to manage the complex wildfire, which has now scorched over 5,000 acres.

Today, crews faced significant challenges with winds reaching up to 35 mph, making containment efforts difficult. Despite these harsh conditions, fire crews managed to expand containment across the fire zone.

The National Weather Service says there is an increased risk of fire spread will develop on Wednesday. North winds will be around 10 mph with gusts in the morning 15 to 20 mph, and diminishing and ending during the afternoon. Along with dry fuels and low relative humidity values around 25 percent will support the spread of any fires that ignite.

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco acknowledged the hard work of fire crews from Bergen County who “fought well into the night” before receiving backup from mutual aid teams from Essex and Hudson counties. Tedesco urged residents to “keep our firefighters and all emergency responders in your thoughts and prayers as they work to fight this fire, save lives, and mitigate damage.”

Fire crews from Hackensack, Englewood, Maywood, Rochelle Park, and River Edge are currently on the scene, working in challenging 6-8 hour shifts due to extremely dry conditions. Additional resources from New York State are also being assembled to tackle the wildfire on the New York side of Greenwood Lake in Orange County.

Officials stress the importance of public caution in affected areas as crews continue their effort to contain the blaze and protect communities in the path of the fire. Check back for updates as firefighters progress in their efforts to manage the Jennings Creek wildfire.
