The state’s largest teachers union endorsed Democrat Barbara Buono for governor after a 15-member screening committee met with her and Governor Christie this weekend, the New Jersey Education Association announced Saturday.
Buono, a state senator first elected in 2001 and the presumptive Democratic nominee for governor in 2013, was selected unanimously by the union’s 135-member operating committee.
The 195,000-member union has been engaged in headline-making battles with Christie over his attempts to reform tenure and rein salaries and school budgets.
“Unfortunately, over the past three years, teachers and school employees have seen their budgets slashed, their colleagues laid off, their class sizes increased, and their programs cut. It’s time for new leadership,” said Barbara Keshishian, president of the NJEA. “Barbara Buono has supported public education for her entire career in the legislature.”

The New Pope: Gorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires Francis Ventures Out of Vatican on First Day as Pope
By Jeffrey Donovan – Mar 14, 2013 10:51 AM ET
Pope Francis ventured outside the Vatican’s walls to pray at a Roman basilica and pay his hotel bill the day after becoming the first Roman Catholic leader to hail from outside Europe in more than 1,200 years.
Gorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires, offered prayers to Mary, the mother of Jesus, during a morning visit to St. Mary Major in Rome’s historic center. The church must offer “mercy, mercy, mercy” for the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, he told priests at the basilica, Father Ludovico Melo said in a Sky TG24 interview.
On his return to the Vatican, Francis stopped off at the clerical residence where he’d stayed during the conclave to pick up his bags, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said at a press briefing. “He then paid his bill to set a good example” at the lodgings on Rome’s Via della Scrofa, he said.
Francis’s election, a surprise choice that reflects the church’s shifting demographics, comes as the Vatican struggles to emerge from an era of scandal and intrigue. Bergoglio’s seen as a Roman outsider after a papal vote depicted by analysts as a struggle between mostly Italian cardinals seeking to preserve the status quo of the Vatican government known as the Curia and others looking to shake it up amid reports of mismanagement and alleged corruption.

Reader says The Ridgewood Projects are an absolutely stupid idea
The Ridgewood Projects are an absolutely stupid idea. Its imperative that people voice their displeasure now. If we don’t, we risk the future of our schools, our safe community, the value of our houses and way of life. Get out Tuesday, or don’t complain in the future about class sizes at your school, traffic on the roads or any of the other associated problems.
Moreover, if folks don’t get out Tuesday to show their displeasure, Mayor Tweedledee is going to assume he has the green light to do what ever he likes. I voted for the guy, because I thought he was earnest and well-meaning. Boy, was I stupid. He clearly has pipe dreams that go far beyond helping or even considering what is right for Ridgewood and his neighbors. But his further political career is going to be stymied, even with the money contractors, developers and hospitals may be willing to contribute in the future, if its clear his own people don’t like what he’s doing.
It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. He is believed to have died on March 17, around 460 A.D. Although his father was a Christian deacon, it has been suggested that he probably took on the role because of tax incentives and there is no evidence that Patrick came from a particularly religious family. At the age of 16, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. (There is some dispute over where this captivity took place. Although many believe he was taken to live in Mount Slemish in County Antrim, it is more likely that he was held in County Mayo near Killala.) During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. (It is also believed that Patrick first began to dream of converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity.)
St. Patrick: Guided By Visions
After more than six years as a prisoner, Patrick escaped. According to his writing, a voice—which he believed to be God’s—spoke to him in a dream, telling him it was time to leave Ireland.
To do so, Patrick walked nearly 200 miles from County Mayo, where it is believed he was held, to the Irish coast. After escaping to Britain, Patrick reported that he experienced a second revelation—an angel in a dream tells him to return to Ireland as a missionary. Soon after, Patrick began religious training, a course of study that lasted more than 15 years. After his ordination as a priest, he was sent to Ireland with a dual mission: to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and to begin to convert the Irish. (Interestingly, this mission contradicts the widely held notion that Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland.)
St. Patrick: Bonfires and Crosses
Familiar with the Irish language and culture, Patrick chose to incorporate traditional ritual into his lessons of Christianity instead of attempting to eradicate native Irish beliefs. For instance, he used bonfires to celebrate Easter since the Irish were used to honoring their gods with fire. He also superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross to create what is now called a Celtic cross, so that veneration of the symbol would seem more natural to the Irish. Although there were a small number of Christians on the island when Patrick arrived, most Irish practiced a nature-based pagan religion. The Irish culture centered around a rich tradition of oral legend and myth. When this is considered, it is no surprise that the story of Patrick’s life became exaggerated over the centuries—spinning exciting tales to remember history has always been a part of the Irish way of life.
The Ridgewood Police Department is urging the public to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day ,responsibly and never drive drunk.
Here are some safety tips from the NHTSA:
■Designate your sober driver or have an alternate transportation plan before the party begins.
■If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend, or family member to come ……and get you; or just stay where you are and don’t drive until you are sober.
■Never let a friend drive drunk. Arrange a safe way for them to get home.
■Don’t ride in a vehicle with a driver who is intoxicated.
■Always buckle up. It’s still your best defense against drunk drivers.
If you are hosting a party:
■Make sure all of your guests designate their sober drivers in advance, or help arrange alternate transportation.
■Serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages at the party.
■Stop serving alcohol a few hours before the end of the party and begin serving coffee and dessert.
■Keep the phone number of local cab companies on hand, and take the keys away from anyone who is thinking of driving drunk and get them a cab ride home.
■Remember, you can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you served ends up in a drunk-driving crash.
■If an underage person drinks and drives, parents may be held liable for any damage, injury or death caused by the underage driver.
■Likewise, parents or other adults who provide alcohol to, or host a party where alcohol is available to, those under age 21 could face jail time.
Menendez’s 2010 travel was not so hectic, records show

WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT
The Record
Bob Menendez has blamed a busy travel schedule for the two-year gap from the time he took flights to the Dominican Republic on the private plane of his friend and top campaign contributor to when he disclosed the trips and then paid for them.
A review of travel records provided by his office does show Menendez was a frequent traveler in 2010, taking 54 trips by air and 22 rides on Amtrak.
But 61 of them were between Washington and New Jersey, the kind of long-distance commuting, funded by the government, that nearly every member of the state’s delegation makes.
That leaves just 15 other trips Menendez took to raise money for himself or fellow senators. One of those trips was over three days in May that included flights on the private plane of campaign contributor Salomon Melgen. A campaign committee controlled by Menendez reimbursed the cost of those flights in 2010.
But Menendez did not disclose two later trips that year on that same private plane owned by Melgen.
Ridgewood School officials take softer approach in Ridgewood sexting case

By now, this school-day story is familiar: a nude picture of a teenager that, in a moment of indiscretion, is sent to a friend and becomes infamous after it is distributed electronically.
And then it becomes the focus of a criminal investigation.
But as recent events in Ridgewood have illustrated, school officials’ and law-enforcement agencies’ approach to the increasingly common practice known as sexting, and its unintended consequences, has changed dramatically since the word first entered the American lexicon six years ago.
When Ridgewood officials learned that nude pictures of two girls were circulating among students, they announced that anyone with photos on their electronic devices had until Monday, a so-called amnesty period, to delete them or face criminal charges.
It’s a softer touch than one applied in 2010 in Clifton – to take one example – when a female student was charged with distribution of child pornography because she posted nude photos of herself on MySpace for her boyfriend to see. That charge meant she could face 17 years in prison and the requirement to register as a sex offender. It was later downgraded, and the girl received probation.
