The heart of Ridgewood is getting a new landmark.

Some educators leave a mark on a school building; Basil Pizzuto left one on an entire generation. In a permanent tribute to a man whose influence stretched far beyond the classroom, Ridgewood High School (RHS) has announced the official renaming of Heermance Place to Pizzuto Way.

The dedication ceremony is set for Thursday, June 5, 2026, at 2:30 p.m., coinciding with the school’s vibrant annual Celebration of the Arts.

A Legacy of Heart and Soul

Basil Pizzuto wasn’t just an administrator; he was the pulse of RHS for 24 years. Serving as a dedicated math teacher, Lead Grade Advisor, and Assistant Principal, he invested his “heart and soul” into every student and staff member he encountered.

His sudden passing on November 23, 2022, just one day before his 50th birthday, left a profound void in the community. From his role at RHS to his service as a Saddle Brook Volunteer Firefighter and his leadership in the St. Philip’s Music Ministry, Basil’s life was defined by service, music, and mentorship.

Why “Pizzuto Way” Matters

Renaming a street is a rare honor, but for those who knew “Baz,” it feels only right. This change ensures that future generations of Maroons will walk the same path he did, reminded of a leader who led with kindness, humor, and unwavering support.

  1. Does the Ridgewood Board of Education have the authority to “officially“ rename a public street?

    1. with Ridgewood’s School budget , the kids should be paving streets during summer break

    2. Pretty sure the village turned over the road to the board of ed so the high school could restrict parking there to school employees.
