Ridgewood NJ, The exact origin of critical injuries sustained by an individual who was found lying on the street in front of 15 West Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, remained under investigation by Ridgewood PD and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office hours after the victim was found at 7:20 PM on Monday, 09/24. The individual, said to be a male, was rushed by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson.
West Ridgewood Avenue between Garber/Wilsey Square and South Monroe Street was closed for hours while investigators took photographs and interviewed bystanders. The owners of vehicles parked on the street nearby the incident location were not permitted to remove them until investigators finished gathering photographic and physical evidence. Initial reports were that the individual may have been the victim of a hit and run accident, but Ridgewood Police Chief Jacqueline Luthcke, who was at the scene, would not confirm that hypothesis. Ridgewood Emergency Services provided scene lighting and traffic control assistance during the street closure. Ridgewood Fire Department and Ridgewood EMS responded to aid the victim.
So sad please keep us posted
The victim passed away in the hospital later that night
it’s dark at night folks& that intersection up there with multiple dangers from all 4 sides adding in a train station
lot entry & exit and many pedestrians rushing about..They should restrict no right on red coming up from the low underpass routes towards the square aside the large apartment building on the right. The whole train station area needs a renewed and deeper traffic review with pedestrians safety being the focus.
How fast must the driver have been going …?
I stay the heck away from the CBD. Too many people jaywalking and then RPD pulls you over for not stopping.
Moving dangerous violation hurts your pocketbook too
Insurance wise . They should focus on speeders , texting and dangerous driving near schools hospitals and Cbiz district . Someone paid with their life this week .stakes are high
So sad to hear that it was Ed Rao of Weichert that passed away.
Just want to point out that the much hated (on this blog) and recently partially undone reconfiguring of this area (you guys call it the bike lane to nowhere) was done specifically to slow down motor vehicles on both sides of the train station and make the area safer for pedestrians.
Your right Len Diamond and maybe you should point out that this council is spending three hundred thousand dollars to make more parking for the train station further adding to the traffic in that area
Why is Jeffrey Voigt talking about this in the newspaper? Is he the Mayor? Is he the chief of police?
For those of Us Taxpayers who use or are there every work day in that RIDGEWOOD station Parking Lot
dropping or picking up train Passengers especially in Fall /Winter seasons ,it is maxed out especially as trains discharge and the driver scramble to be able to leave quickly including riders running to their cars…Its a zoo free for all…it is maxed out capacity and
safety wise ,,drivers backing out of spaces in the Dark racing to exit the station ,,idling
while waiting to exit the station into the bottleneck exit while passenger pedestrians
are trying to safely leave the station ..all at the same time.We don’t need more compact
cars up there to add to the danger..it smells like a money grab and chance to spend over 300,000K for added compact cars at the station while we are on the hook for a raised garage to the tune of 12 Million dollars being erected on the northbound side of the station where NYC arriving trains arrive . Think safety and congestion in the dark and snowy seasons .Leave the station alone or modify the idling policy for uber and commercial vehicles .This could save a life especially in the Dark morning and evening
seasons .
We don’t need more cars period. Or quite frankly we don’t need to be Hackensack or summit. The high density housing and the garage are only going to add to this. Ridgewood streets are not wide enough and R idgewood is just not big enough to have all this happening. And at once.
Adios Ridgewood. It is getting too dangerous to live here
This is very sad. I’ve noticed that many pedestrians crossing the streets in Ridgewood never look and are not cautious when crossing the streets! The law is for all vehicles to stop at cross walks but that’s not always the case ! Pedestrians have to be aware of there surrounding and not just assume everyone will stop. I pray for the families loss.

I will say I did visit this location on the evening of 9/26//18 at 7:30PM. I noticed how extremely dark it was in front of Puzos Pizza (where Ed Rao was crossing from). While talking with others in the area it was pointed out to me that the streetlight directly in front of Weichert Realtors was not working, it was even darker on that side of the street! Indeed the streetlight (directly above where Ed Rao was struck) was not working on the night I was there.
Pedestrian flag buckets in district was tried 3 to 4 years back and abandoned due to various issues and
vandalism etc . In seattle and dark northern cities they try to use every tool including flag buckets to cross people and town visitors during the dark evenings and winters.
I remember seeing young children with parents waving the orange flags as part of their use in the RIDGEWOOD district
when the past experiment was underway . ITS REALLY DARK and rain layers on the increased danger ..drivers just can’t see as well when weather is clear .
