New Jersey has many positive attributes. We added almost 60,000 jobs in 2016, the state’s largest gain since 2000, according to the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. We have among the best K-12 public education systems in the nation and a highly skilled workforce including the highest concentration of scientists and engineers in the world — more than 225,000 statewide.
New Jersey also has a strong transportation network. We are home to the Port of New York and New Jersey, the third largest seaport in North America and the largest and busiest maritime cargo center on the East Coast. And we are among the national leaders in logistics and distribution. New Jersey is also a great recreation state with more than 130 miles of shoreline, beautiful parks, and mountains.
Despite these great assets, New Jersey remains a significant outlier, both nationally and regionally when comparing competitiveness and affordability including our state’s high cost of living and its heavy tax burden. New Jersey’s border states, Pennsylvania and New York, continue to be the No. 1 and No. 2 outmigration states for New Jersey residents and are challenging our competitiveness.
To reverse this trend we must examine our policies on taxation, revenue generation, and spending, and we must do so through the filter of competitiveness and affordability.
It’s no secret that young adults today are experiencing milestones — purchasing a home, getting married, having a child — later in life compared to previous generations.
But a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau digs even deeper and finds a statistic that’s hard to ignore: A quarter of 25-to-34-year-olds still living at home are considered “idle” — meaning they have no job or schooling to attend.
More than 2 million older millennials fall in this category nationwide, according to the report. The majority are men and most are aged 25 to 29. About half are white.
“In 2005, the majority of young adults lived independently in their own household, which was the predominant living arrangement in 35 states. A decade later, by 2015, the number of states where the majority of young people lived independently fell to just six,” the report said.
In New Jersey, most young people are not living independently.

A lawsuit between a conservative group and the Jersey City teachers union will proceed after a judge denied the union’s bid to dismiss the suit on Friday.
The legal spat focuses on “release time,” a provision in the union’s contract with the public-school district that allows two top union officials to devote all of their time to union activities while getting paid by the district.
Judge Barry Sarkisian dismissed the Jersey City Education Association’s efforts to derail the lawsuit during a roughly 30-minute hearing on Friday morning.
JCEA President Ron Greco declined to comment. Greco is one of the two officials permitted to work full time for the union. The JCEA has argued that freeing Greco of his teaching duties allows him to resolve “potentially disruptive disputes” between the 28,000-student district and its staff.

Special thanks to Commander Bob Paoli and all of our Veterans, the Ridgewood High School Band and Jeff Haas, Sally Ann Tumas Skoric, Sophia Sheehy, Father Ron and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Ridgewood Police, Fire and EMT and, most especially, ALL those honored and remembered on Memorial Day. Below is the full text of my speech from today – speaking from the heart I may have missed a few lines!

-Each day leaving my house, or when returning home, I see the flag of the United States of America, the American flag, OUR flag proudly flying from a pole attached to my front porch. There have been times when I thought I might like to change out the flag to a seasonal design to greet spring or summer, welcome fall, wish a merry Christmas or maybe acknowledge a birthday. I never have. You see, OUR flag is the most beautiful flag I’ve ever seen. Mine is faded and needs to be replaced. Even faded it’s the most beautiful flag in the world.
-Arriving at Village Hall I see the flag flying out front greeting visitors; the Prisoner of War – Missing in Action sharing the halyard, resting just below. At Memorial Park is the American flag with the Honor and Remember flag, once again sharing the halyard just below, following her every move.
-Sometimes our flag whips and flies wildly with a wicked gust. Sometimes she flies firm and sturdy with a steady wind. Sometimes gently waving on a soft and tender breeze. Sometimes, when the air is still, she rests peacefully…..tranquil, waiting for the next wind to raise her up in magnificent glory. Perhaps, on this rainy day, she simply weeps for the blood of fallen heroes spent protecting our freedoms.
-There are those times, too many times, when the flag is found bringing home the brave in a flag draped casket.
Proudly, yet tenderly and reverently, covering one of our soldiers on a last journey home to loved ones and a grateful nation. Removed and folded thirteen times – each fold with meaning and spiritual significance. Beginning with the first as a symbol of life – ending with the last, a reminder to all that In God We Trust. Another fallen hero is laid to rest.
-Who were these heroes? Our fallen heroes honored here today on Memorial Day? They were men and women, tall and short, big and small, young and old, of all colors, race, ethnicity, religion, faith, culture, orientation, from all walks of life, from every part of our nation and from all around the world, speaking many languages, with differing levels of education from every conceivable background. They were from cities and towns, mountains and farmland. Look around – our fallen heroes reflect all of us.
-Forever missed and loved by family and friends, loved and honored by a nation. Remembered here today for their sacrifice to our country and for protecting that glorious flag, a beacon of hope around the world and all it represents: freedom, liberty and human rights. Proudly waving in the wind saluting our bravest. Saluting our fallen heroes.
As New Jersey schools draw up their annual budgets, some are finding that revenues aren’t enough to support all their needs. As a result, a few are contemplating or have approved laying off teachers and other staff for the 2017-2018 school year.
Here are the districts who are facing those cuts, listed by those who are planning to lay off the fewest staff members to the districts that are facing the most severe cuts.
Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police, Fire, and EMS responded to a two (2) vehicle collision at the intersection of Grove Street and South Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood shortly after 7:00 AM on Monday Memorial day , 05/29. Firefighters attended to a minor crash related fluid spill while EMTs evaluated the driver of the 4-door Honda Accord involved in the crash; the victim refused to be transported to a hospital. A flatbed tow truck removed both wrecks from the scene. No word as to whether any summonses were issued in connection with the incident.
Let’s not blame four great elected officials for the folly and bull of Jeff Voigt. The article doesn’t make sense and Vogt does seem paranoid. If the Mayor filed an opra for doublin emails then why would she suddenly have to work in concert with anyone to file an opra. Doesn’t make sense to me. Is the mayor limited to only one Opra in a year? Why would Vogt feel intimidated because of emails on a public server? He is supposed to be doing village business. Does this mean he’s doing village business with Alfred Dublin or the record? Ifso, exactly what village business is he doing with them? It sounds like Vogt is trying to suppress public records or maybe he’s just a fool. In either case he’s not serving Ridgewood residents. If voigt has a lgbt brother why didn’t he say so in a public meeting? Instead he writes in a letter to editor?

Thanks to Dublin I’ll be saving more than $300 year by canceling my subscription to the Record. His two oped pieces are offensive and obviously distorted. As a longtime resident of Ridgewood I’ve been following village council for many years. It’s clear that Jeff Voigt is grandstanding. If he were really interested in the Village he would have sat with other council and discussed instead of spoon-feeding Doblin such drivel.
Doblin commenting on the pride flag shows how little he knows about the facts. Then I’d like to know exactly what is “the plight of the LGBT community in Ridgewood.” He goes onto to say “at a public meeting the mayor and two other council members showed reluctance to fly the gay pride flag in ridgewood, that’s what happened in the public meeting, the part the public sees.” Watching from home that’s not what I saw or heard. I thought the discussion was where to have the flag and the request to put on the flag pole at village hall. I heard Councilwoman Walsh say the gay pride flag should not be on the pole with the American flag and she offer to put the flag inside village hall. Doblins comment about what happened in the public meeting, ” the part the public sees” is funny coming from the editor of a newspaper. it’s all supposed to be seen by the public and the only person who seems to be hiding anything is councilman Voigt.
As we enter the warmer weather, we all look forward to being outdoors more often and tending to our lawns and gardens. A postcard will be sent to all Ridgewood Water customers in Ridgewood, which will summarize the new permanent water regulations, for conservation purposes. I encourage you to use the postcard as a reminder of the new regulations, by putting it in a place where it can easily be referenced. The new regulations are summarized below:
Two-day per week irrigation is permanent year round, including private wells:
Odd numbered addresses on Tuesday & Saturday
Even numbered addresses on Wednesday & Sunday
Restrict irrigation hours to limit water evaporation:
No irrigation between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
Automatic system use permitted only between 3:00 a.m. & 7:00 a.m.
Watering exemptions are offered for the use of smart controllers (must seek approval from Ridgewood Water Administration in Village Hall).
All automatic irrigation systems shall be equipped with an operational automatic rain sensor.
Approved uses of water, at any time, include:
pool filling
power washing
cleaning gutters
recreational use of sprinklers for children
hand-washing of vehicles
Please conserve water during these approved activities to the greatest extent possible.

Ridgewood NJ, Doblin doubles down on attacks and character assassinations of Ridgewood Mayor Susan Kundsen . Alfred P. Doblin is the editorial page editor of The Bergen Record. In his latest column he once again praises Councilmen Voigt and goes on the offensive against the Mayor. Doblin continues to cling to the silly fallacy his editorial led to the flying of the rainbow ie gay pride flag at Ridgewood’s Van Nest square .
In his last piece Doblin took sides against Village voters and taxpayer with the full support of the former and failed politician Mayor Paul Aronsohn . In his latest peice “Doblin: In Ridgewood, speech is free, but not always easy” https://www.northjersey.com/story/opinion/columnists/alfred-doblin/2017/05/28/doblin-ridgewood-speech-free-but-not-always-pleasant/349657001/ Doblin continues to endorse the grotesque and disrespectful behavior of both the Aronsohn regime and Councilmen Voigt . Perhaps he has a women’s issue or perhaps he is in league with politicians and developers looking to urbanize Bergen County . What ever the case once again it bears repeating ; Residents and taxpayers have every right to OPRA politicians emails period and it both offensive and dishonest to suggest otherwise .
We are still waiting to see the photo ops from Mr Doblin visiting Mosques , posting the rainbow flag at their door steps or his editorials looking to limit radical Islam from gaining entrance to the country ,given their known proclivity for KILLING GAYS. In either case it no surprise to anyone that the Bergen Record would align it self against taxpayers and work in collusion with people looking to undermine the Democratic process. Ridgewood residents may consider boycotting the Bergen Record until the Village get a full apology form Alfred P. Doblin.
