Ridgewood to reconsider financing parking-garage construction on its own

THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — The Village Council may introduce a bond ordinance Wednesday to fund a proposed municipal parking garage without using county money, despite recent approvals from the county.

The move is a sharp departure for the council, the majority of which agreed in January to ask the Bergen County Improvement Authority to bond for the garage’s approximate $12.3 million cost. That vote came after the governing body could not get the required four-vote super-majority necessary to authorize the municipality to bond for the project on its own.

But the idea of locally bonding the costs of the proposed Hudson Street deck was put forward again on Feb. 21 by Mayor Paul Aronsohn in an email to some community members. It’s seen as an attempt to assuage the unsatisfied council minority — as well as residents who’ve started a petition drive to force the funding issue into a public referendum.

“Although I still believe that a partnership with the BCIA would be a good thing for Ridgewood, I want to give my council colleagues another chance to make this happen,” Aronsohn said in the email.

The reintroduced ordinance will be for $11.5 million, a smaller number that reflects the garage’s newly reduced size — instead of 405 spaces, the garage would accommodate 325.

Some on the council initially favored the larger structure, but officials scaled back plans last month after vocal public opposition. Many residents said the building would be too large, protruding into Hudson Street and constricting local traffic.

Glen Rock Residents Get a Chance to Hear Out Ridgewood Water officials

Ridgewood Water Info Session 2/23/16 from Glen Rock TV on Vimeo.

GLEN ROCK, NJ , Glen residents questioned , Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn, and Ridgewood Water officials during special public meeting recently.

The meeting was the second such meeting giving the new Ridgewood water management team a chance to explain the complexities of managing a decentralized water system as opposed to a single source system.

The Village of Ridgewood owns the embattled utility company, which services Wyckoff, Midland Park, and Glen Rock.

A major lawsuit by officials from those municipalities alleges that the utility artificially inflated its costs by commingling Village of Ridgewood expenses with that of the water utility. In a recent press release Wyckoff officials claim the, “massive” 37 percent rate increases approved since 2010 are “unlawful” and “excessive,”

A prominent US senator just threw his support to Donald Trump

sen-jeff-sessions-2012-reuters-640x480

“The events of history have aligned to give the people this fleeting chance to bust up the oligarchy – to take back control from the ‘Masters of the Universe’ return it to the good and decent and patriotic citizens of the United States.” Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama

Colin Campbell

Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama endorsed Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump’s campaign on Sunday.

Trump announced the endorsement alongside Sessions at a massive campaign rally in Madison, Alabama.

“At this time in America’s history, we need to make America great again!” Sessions exclaimed, echoing Trump’s campaign slogan. “I am pleased to endorse Donald Trump for the presidency of the United States.”

Sessions, known for his hard-line stance against illegal immigration, is popular in some conservative circles.

Sen. Ted Cruz, another presidential candidate, frequently invoked Sessions in order to defend his record on immigration. On Sunday, Drudge Report founder Matt Drudge called Sessionsthe “conservative soul” of the US Senate.

Several other notable politicians have also recently thrown their support to Trump, though another GOP candidate, Marco Rubio, has grabbed the lion’s share of recent endorsements from elected officials.

Last Friday, former presidential candidate and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie endorsed Trump. And former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, whose own record on illegal immigration once caused a national firestorm, announced her support for Trump on Saturday.

Tulsi Gabbard, Rising Democratic Star, Endorses Bernie Sanders

Tulsi Gabbard

Representative Tulsi Gabbard, Democrat of Hawaii, resigned as a vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee on Sunday in order to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for president.

The endorsement came a day after Hillary Clinton won the Democratic primary in South Carolina by a huge margin — she captured nearly 74 percent of the vote — in a signal of her support in the South right before several other Southern states vote in Tuesday’s primaries.

Ms. Gabbard explained her decision in a video on YouTube in which she said that, as a military veteran, she wanted the United States to avoid “interventionist wars of regime change.”

New era begins at Palisades Medical Center as part of Hackensack’s network

THE RECORD

Signs with a new name for Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen went up on the waterfront campus Saturday after a judge late Friday approved Hackensack University Health Network’s acquisition of the Hudson County hospital.

HackensackUMC Palisades, as it will now be known, will become a fully owned part of the system that includes the flagship Hackensack University Medical Center, two jointly owned hospitals in Westwood and Montclair, and the affiliated Englewood Hospital Medical Center, when the deal is officially signed on Tuesday.

With its million-dollar views of the Manhattan skyline and access to the growing population of young professionals and affluent retirees along the Hudson River “Gold Coast,” Palisades gives Hackensack a prime opportunity to grow in Hudson County and southern Bergen County. Hackensack also acquires its first nursing home, the 245-bed Harborage, located next door on River Road and owned by Palisades.

The sale also marks a reduction in the number of independent community hospitals, as the consolidation of health-care facilities into larger systems continues in New Jersey and the rest of the country. When the Hackensack health network completes its planned merger with the Jersey Shore’s Meridian Health system, expected later this year, it will encompass 11 hospitals and become the largest health system in the state.

NY Times Bombshell Scoop: Fox News Colluded with Rubio to Give Amnesty to Illegal Alien

marco rubio

by BREITBART NEWS27 Feb 20169,599

Jason Horowitz writes in the New York Times:

A few weeks after Senator Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined a bipartisan push for an immigration overhaul in 2013, he arrived alongside Senator Chuck Schumer at the executive dining room of News Corporation’s Manhattan headquarters for dinner.

Their mission was to persuade Rupert Murdoch, the owner of the media empire, and Roger Ailes, the chairman and chief executive of its Fox News division, to keep the network’s on-air personalities from savaging the legislation and give it a fighting chance at survival.

Mr. Murdoch, an advocate of immigration reform, and Mr. Ailes, his top lieutenant and the most powerful man in conservative television, agreed at the Jan. 17, 2013, meeting to give the senators some breathing room.

But the media executives, highly attuned to the intensifying anger in the Republican grass roots, warned that the senators also needed to make their case to Rush Limbaugh, the king of conservative talk radio, who held enormous sway with the party’s largely anti-immigrant base.

The dinner at News Corporation headquarters — which has not been previously reported — and the subsequent outreach to Mr. Limbaugh illustrate the degree to which Mr. Rubio served as the chief envoy to the conservative media for the group supporting the legislation. The bill would have provided a pathway to American citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants along with measures to secure the borders and ensure that foreigners left the United States upon the expiration of their visas.

It is a history that Mr. Rubio is not eager to highlight as he takes on Donald J. Trump, his rival for the Republican presidential nomination, who has made his vow to crack down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his campaign.

Reader Adele Mimnaugh finds Purpose giving back to her Community and helping others

Adele Mimnaugh of Whycoff

February 28,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Wyckoff NJ, Adele Mimnaugh  tells us in her own words how she found he own way to get involved in her local community and help others . Adele is an  Occupational Therapist by trade and loves her work . Not content to stand on the sidelines Adele found a way to contribute in her own unique way. In her own words Adele tells her story:

“I have been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Wyckoff  since the age of four when we moved to town.  I have enjoyed the fellowship over the years as well as my involvement on the mission committee which oversees programs and activities such as local soup kitchens, to planning and hosting Christmas parties for the underprivileged in the area.

I became involved in our Steven ministry program about two years ago. My mother was excited about the program and to start training; I inquired about it and felt it was definitely a calling for me.  I was right !! I have always enjoyed helping others and I’m a big believer in paying it forward. Steven Ministry is a wonderful venue for laypeople trained in the congregation by their Steven leaders, to provide one to one Christ centered care to people who are hurting.  The care receivers can be a member of the church or anyone in need in the community.

As a Stephen Minister I am able to work with anyone ( female ) who is going through a hard time such as death of a loved one, divorce, illness, loss of employment or anyone experiencing turmoil for any reason.I begin my caring relationship as a Stephen Minister when I am matched with someone experiencing a  life crisis.  I meet with the person usually on a weekly basis to listen, Care, encourage and provide emotional and spiritual support as needed. The ministry is highly confidential and no details are ever discussed among the ministry or with anyone for that matter.Trust is a huge component as it is in any relationship.

I have grown as a result of being a Stephen Minister in many ways. Not only do I enjoy my quality and prayerful time with my care receiver but I also enjoy the bimonthly supervision and continuing education meetings with my fellow Stephen ministers.
I am a big believer in being kind.  Kindness is a natural thing and to see a smile on someone’s face can make my day. I feel so very blessed to be a part of my Grace United Methodist Church and Steven ministry family.”

What is Stephen Ministry all about?

The Stephen Series is a program overseen by Stephen Ministries St. Louis; that teaches and enables members of congregations all over the world to care for one another just as Jesus commands us to do. Stephen Ministers go through extensive training in their individual churches to learn how to care for people who are experiencing some type of loss in their lives; i.e. loss of a family member, a job, their dependence, their health, their self esteem, their faith… just to name a few. A Stephen Minister is paired in a relationship with one person and meets with him or her (men with men and women with women) one to one on a weekly basis for an hour or so to ‘walk alongside them,’ offering comfort and encouragement, extending the hand of Jesus. All of this is done without judgment and is completely confidential. Stephen Ministry has been here at Grace since early 2009. To be trained as a Stephen Minister one needs to be a member of GUMC but to receive care, one need not be a member of Grace or of any church. Stephen Ministry is a Christian Caring Ministry but will offer care to anyone, provided that the situation is appropriate. To inquire about receiving care from a Stephen Minister, or to inquire about training to become a Stephen Minister, please e-mail us at [email protected]. A new training class will be offered starting in the fall 2015 and will run for 20 weeks on Monday nights.

Ridgewood Real-estate :The hidden costs of owning a new home

Congratulations, you’re a new homeowner. You’re also a home fixer. The house you thought was in working order at closing may actually need a new water heater, plumbing or roof.

As experienced homeowners know, the costs of ownership don’t end with the down payment and the monthly mortgage. They only begin there. And all of the other aspects of maintaining a home can offer a few surprises.

For instance, when Stacey Sheridan and her husband moved into their first home in Fair Lawn in April 2008, they thought they had a working central air system. “The inspector had told us that it was too cold to check the temperature of the air conditioning unit,” she said, and the sellers had said it worked. “Lo and behold, when the weather got warm, we turned it on, it did not work.”

Ridgewood school chief to advise trustees on best path toward full-day kindergarten

kindergarten-cop-comedy

BY STEVE JANOSKI
STAFF WRITER |
THE RECORD

RIDGEWOOD — The school district’s superintendent will recommend next month whether the Board of Education should look to implement a full-day kindergarten program this fall or wait until 2017-18.

The recommendation, by Daniel Fishbein, will come on the heels of a report given Monday night by a special committee of parents, administrators and other professionals tasked with looking into the program’s feasibility in Ridgewood.

Cheryl Best, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment and the special committee’s head, presented two options: a tax-supported full-day program or an optional tuition-only afternoon service that would complement the district’s existing morning program.

Both would serve to extend the day for Ridgewood’s youngest students, the committee found, and allow more time for studying math, reading and science, as well as a snack/recess break.

But although the district could start a tuition-based program on its own, a tax-supported full-day program would require voter approval because the necessary money is not available in next year’s budget, school board President Sheila Brogan said.

In that case, the board would put a second question on the November ballot asking voters to increase the budget to fund it, she said.

Because the next school year will be well under way by the November election, Best said that any full-day program implemented in the school year starting in the year must be tuition-based. But if the board elected to wait for the 2017-18 school year, she said, it would have the option of posing the second question to the public this fall, and using the tuition-based proposal as a backup plan if it was rejected.

Fishbein said he will make his recommendation at the board’s March 7 meeting. Brogan said she was unsure if the board would make its final decision afterward — any request by trustees for further information could push the vote to March 21.

Ridgewood NJ, with the announcement that the citizens group has gathered enough signatures to force a binding referendum on BCIA funding of the garage . Mayor Paul Aronsohn has already announced his intention to go back to Village financing for the project .
With a council election just around the corner it makes sense to postpone any action on the garage until the next council . Recent verbal and physical attacks on residents have crossed the line and the public no longer feels comfortable with the current council. Lets face it ,the entire project is now suspect and the public has lost all confidence and trust in the current Village Council.
Key information like the Maser report appears to have been withheld from the public and some council members as well as the conclusions in the Walker report seem to have been misinterpreted, with the reality being the garage has little chance of paying for itself. The projects design and financial impact on the village , as well as increases in parking rates appear to be left to chance by the current council majority .
Other projects are waiting in the wings , like the high density housing for the central business district, negotiations with Valley Hospital and the Ridgewood Water suit  all  of which will force major changes to the Village of Ridgewood .
Common sense should prevail and all major decisions about the Village and Village business should be postponed until the new council takes over in June and restores the public’s confidence in the Village council’s ability to represent the residents of Ridgewood .

RIDGEWOOD GRASSROOTS PARKING GARAGE PETITION EXCEEDS SIGNATURE GOAL, SEEKS TO PUT GARAGE FINANCING OPTIONS TO VOTERS

BCIA petition OLMC

Hundreds upon hundreds of Ridgewood taxpayers demand voice on how to fund parking garage.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ Friday afternoon, in a victory for the voice of the taxpayers and responsible public financing, the NO2BCIA [https://no2bcia.com/]citizen group delivered over 1300 signatures, more than enough, to force a binding referendum on a Village ordinance that would have the county rather than the Village bond the proposed Hudson Street parking garage.

The Committee of Petitioners was formed in the aftermath of a failure of the Ridgewood Village Council to achieve the 41 supermajority vote necessary for the Village to bond the project itself, due to lack of critical design renderings requested by Councilmember Susan Knudsen for the community and Council to review and assess, and the lack of a payment plan to present to taxpayers, as requested by Councilman Sedon.

Instead, a simple majority (32) of the Council immediately at the same meeting, introduced Ordinance 3519, an ordinance authorizing the execution and granting of a Lease Purchase Agreement with the Bergen County Improvement Authority.

The petition seeks to protest and repeal Ordinance 3519 until it can be voted on by registered voters of Ridgewood, as a binding referendum question. The Committee of Petitioners seeks to ensure that all aspects of the garage remain securely within the control of the Village.

“This is a huge victory for the residents of Ridgewood who want to have common sense solutions to parking and how it is funded. This petition is not antigarage. In fact, in talking to the many people who signed, many of them voted for a garage on the nonbinding referendum in November. They just want Ridgewood to have full control and flexibility of the pricing structure, especially when it comes to resident and nonresident commuters using the garage.” says Petitioner Lorraine Reynolds. “Now we hope to encourage full Council support for a garage design that meets the wishes of the surrounding community, including shopkeepers, restaurant owners, and most of all, the residents of Ridgewood.”

Petitioner Gail McCarthy adds, “I am very optimistic. ‘Compromise is the best and cheapest lawyer.’ I am pretty sure we would all much rather be spending our time and money shopping in downtown Ridgewood!”

Police have charged 12 women they say work at 11 area massage parlors with prostitution offenses, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Friday in a release.

The arrests followed a week-long undercover investigation and were made at massage parlors in seven municipalities on three separate days, Grewal said. He said that each person arrested worked as a masseuse and is accused of engaging in sex with customers.

Nine of the women are from Queens, N.Y., one is from Maryland and two are from Little Ferry, the acting prosecutor said. The arrests were made at four massage parlors in Edgewater, two in Fairview and one apiece in Wyckoff, Tenafly, River Edge, Little Ferry and South Hackensack.

The two women who reside in Little Ferry are Shunyu Pio Piao, 48, who worked at a spa in Little Ferry, and Mihwa Jang, 41, who worked at one of the Edgewater massage parlors targeted in the investigation, Grewal said, and the Maryland woman, Yougin Cho, 36, was arrested at a spa in South Hackensack.
