THE RECORD

The Iraq war veteran carefully looped a thread around a steel hook secured in a vice to make a fly-fishing lure as his 15-year-old guide, Will Percy, quietly offered words of advice.

It was an exercise in patience that in some way embodies the challenging task that Will, a Wyckoff resident, has embarked upon: bringing fly-fishing into the lives of disabled veterans.

Nearly a year ago, Will saw a promotion for a non-profit fishing group, Project Healing Waters, that teaches fly-fishing skills to disabled veterans. He contacted the New York chapter and asked if he could get involved. A short time later, the call came back, asking if he would guide a disabled veteran on an outing on the Musconetcong River in northwest New Jersey.

That’s when he realized that the peace he always got from fly-fishing might help someone else. It inspired him to found a North Jersey chapter of the group, whose mission began in therapy classes at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 2005. Since then, the program has expanded to 209 locations across the 50 states and in Germany.

The organization assisted 6,572 disabled veterans last year, said Daniel Morgan, the spokesman for Project Healing Waters. The non-profit aims to keep disabled veterans involved in fly-fishing for the long term and will outfit a participant with $500 worth of gear

PSE&G Prepares for Approaching Storm System

pseG_truck2_theridgewoodblog

Extra personnel and equipment at the ready

Ridgewood NJ, Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey’s largest electric and gas utility, is preparing for the approaching storm system that could bring snow, freezing rain and high winds to the company’s service territory. The utility is scheduling additional personnel in the field, fueling trucks and has spare poles and other equipment available.

“While snow and wind normally don’t pose a serious problem, icing on lines and trees can increase the possibility of downed wires and power outages,” said John Latka, senior vice president of electric and gas operations for PSE&G. “Those types of conditions also make it difficult for our crews to get around, and we can’t go up in buckets to make repairs if there are high winds. We will respond to outages and no-heat calls around the clock — as quickly and safely as possible.”

In advance of the storm, PSE&G advises customers to prepare an emergency kit that includes:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Cell phone with chargers

PSE&G urges its customers to be cautious during and after the storm:

  • To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, do not run any gasoline powered engine, including generators and snowblowers, in a garage or any other enclosed space.
  • Downed wires should always be considered “live.” Do not approach or drive over a downed line and do not touch anything that it might be in contact with.

To report downed wires or power outages, call PSE&G’s Customer Service line at 1-800-436-PSEG.  Also, customers can report outages by logging into their PSE&G account online or by texting “OUT” to 4PSEG (47734). The utility’s mobile-friendly website includes an “Outage Map” that is updated every 15 minutes and displays the location and status of power outages in PSE&G’s service area.

SAT Test Center Closings

Information about SAT test center closings for the January SAT administration date will be posted to this page as it becomes available. If a makeup date or alternate test center information has been confirmed, that information will also be included.

SAT Test Center Supervisors are instructed to notify local media outlets when their centers are unable to open due to inclement weather, natural disaster, power failure, or other problems. Please check your local media for test center closings in your area.

If your center is listed as closed:

  • A new center may appear in the listing. In this case, access your online account and print a new, updated ticket with the new center information noted on it. You must bring your updated ticket with you on test day to the reassigned center.
  • If no new center appears, please be patient while we work to arrange a makeup date — you will be contacted as soon as a makeup is scheduled.  Remember: don’t try to test elsewhere on test day — supervisors cannot admit standbys or walk-ins.

Please note: If you had a Waitlist Ticket for a closed center, your original Waitlist request was canceled, and you are not eligible for makeup testing. Please register for the next available date as soon as possible.

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

welcome_to_Ridgewood_theridgewoodblog

Resident,

We, at Village Hall, have been closely monitoring the weather forecasts over the last several days. While not definitive as yet, there does appear to be a growing consensus that we will experience a significant snow event from Saturday morning into Sundaymorning with accumulations between 4-8 inches.  The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch.

It’s been a while since our last snow event, so I wanted to take this opportunity to not just assure you that we are on top of this, but also to provide some information that will help us work together to safely handle this event.

First of all, safety of our residents is the primary concern – so please stay off of the roads and drive only if absolutely necessary; this storm may not just be a snow event – there is a likelihood of high winds so blowing and drifting snow may be an issue.

To stay informed, please check our Village website (www.ridgewoodnj.net), our information phone number 201-444-1776, Channels 34 or 77…….. and if you are not already signed up for Emergency Notifications please do so on our website.

Residents should call 911 only for life threatening emergencies.  Please call our Police Line (201-652-3900) to report downed power lines, trees, etc.  Please call PSE&G directly(800-436-7734) to report loss of power.

Please keep fire hydrants free of debris and do not deposit snow into the streets. Additionally, vehicles should not be parked on the streets as it affects our ability to clear the street of snow.  As a reminder, snow must be cleared off of the sidewalks within 24 hours of the storm’s end.

We are starting our brining operation (liquid solution of water and salt) today and will work through tomorrow to coat all of our streets.  Depending upon the amount and texture of the snow as well as the temperature, brining can be an effective snow accumulation deterrent that also can reduce the amount of salt we apply and the amount of plowing we need to do.

Please be reminded that our snow removal is prioritized according to emergency routes, main roads, hills and Central Business District.  After these areas are cleared, plowing begins on secondary roads.  Please use caution when approaching Village vehicles that are salting and plowing.

Thanks to everyone for their cooperation and stay safe,

Roberta Sonenfeld

The ‘Obama is a Muslim’ conspiracy theory is still reverberating in the Middle East

obama-muslim

By Adam Taylor January 21 at 12:00 AM

When Barack Obama stepped onto the national political stage almost a decade ago, rumors swirled that he was secretly a Muslim. These rumors have frequently been debunked — the U.S. president is a practicing Christian — but they persist nonetheless: In a poll conducted in 2014, 54 percent of Republicans were found to believe that Obama was a Muslim “deep down.”

The endurance of these conspiracy theories can probably be attributed to Obama’s position as the first African American president of the United States — his two terms as president have been wrapped up in issues of race and identity. But it’s also worth noting how these theories have mutated as they traveled abroad, adapting in unexpected ways to fit regional arguments.

One of the most persistent and widespread of these conspiracy theories gets more specific than its American variant: Obama isn’t just a Muslim, this theory goes…. he’s a Shiite Muslim.

This week, as the Obama administration announced that it was lifting sanctions on Iran as a result of a U.S.-led nuclear deal with Tehran reached in July, Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, the head of general security for the emirate of Dubai, suggested that Obama’s “Shiite roots” had helped him get elected in a bid to bring the United States and Iran closer.

“Mission accomplished,” he added

Trump Fear Stalks Davos as Elite Pray for Spring Reality Check

Concerns over protectionism and U.S. reputation bubble up
Ex-White House advisor still thinks Trump will be nominee

If Donald Trump as president of the United States is the ghost that’s stalking Davos, many among the global elite hope he’ll be banished by spring. Others see that as wishful thinking.

“I think the nominees will be Donald Trump for the Republicans and Hillary Clinton” for the Democrats, Donald Baer, a former White House adviser under President Bill Clinton, said at a panel co-hosted by Bloomberg and WPP Plc. “The next year will be a very uncertain, chaotic period.”

The prospect of Trump in the White House is ratcheting up anxiety among the 2,500 business and political leaders gathered at the Swiss ski resort for the annual World Economic Forum. With less than two weeks before voting in primaries gets under way and Trump in the Republican Party lead, those who fear a rise in protectionism and economic mismanagement are speaking out against the billionaire property developer.

The lawyer, Andrew F. Plasse, said Lomando did not jump in front of the train as authorities have said he did, but instead fell from the platform of the 168th Street station of the downtown A train as a result of being “jostled” by people in an “overcrowded” station.

Assemblyman Joe Lagana Takes Aim at Estate and Inheritance Taxes

Ridgewoodrealestate9_theridgewoodblog

Assemblyman Joe Lagana (D-38) is making reform to New Jersey’s inheritance and estate taxes a priority for his second term in office. The Democrat has introduced a bill, A611, that would boost the current threshold for the estate tax from where it currently sits at $675,000 to $1.5 million. His plan also includes limiting the inheritance tax from impacting next-of-kin family members of a deceased person and shifting class c and class d beneficiary classifications. Ridgewood Residents encouraged to attend educational presentation on lead poisoning

MIDLAND PARK SUBURBAN NEWS

MIDLAND PARK — The Board of Health is encouraging residents to attend a presentation on “Understanding Lead Poisoning” being sponsored by the Ridgewood Environmental Advisory Committee in Ridgewood on Jan. 25.

A representative of Ridgewood Water will reportedly be present.

Ridgewood Water issued a notice to customers on Jan. 5 saying its water does not have lead in it, but that some homes in its service territory have pipes from which lead leaches into water in excess of the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL).

Ridgewood Water serves residents in the borough, Wyckoff and Glen Rock as well as the village.

“At each of our last three meetings, the topic of Ridgewood Water has been discussed,” said Laurie DiCorcia, president of the Board of Health. “This forum offers residents an opportunity to become informed and ask questions.”

Council President Nancy Cronk Peet said she was “concerned” about the safety of the water supply and plans to attend the Jan. 25 program.

“The water coming to the borough homes and businesses must be properly monitored by the water company to assure the residents that the leaching of the lead in the older residents’ plumbing is not contaminating the drinking water,” said Peet, a member of the health board “I hope that the community will come out and ask questions about the water quality and services.”

Ridgewood Water business manager Dave Scheibner assured the Ridgewood Village Council on Wednesday, Jan. 13, that its water is safe.

PSE&G Cautions Carbon Monoxide Poisoning More Common in Cold Weather

PSEG Gas leak
file photo by Boyd Loving
January 19,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G), New Jersey’s largest utility, cautions that while carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a year-round threat, it is more common in cold weather when more fuel heating appliances are in use. PSE&G urges customers to take extra preventative measures this winter to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, and maintain a heightened awareness of the symptoms.

CO is odorless, tasteless and can be deadly. Small amounts of CO are in the air whenever fuel such as oil, natural gas, coal or wood is burned.  These amounts are usually not harmful.  However, if a heating system or chimney is not working properly, too much CO can build up in the air and cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

Symptoms of poisoning include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. Symptoms can occur immediately or gradually after long-term exposure. People who are sleeping can die from CO poisoning before ever experiencing any of these warning signs. It affects people of all ages, but infants and children are even more susceptible than adults.

For safety’s sake:

The first line of defense against CO poisoning is to make sure all fuel-burning appliances operate and are maintained properly.  These appliances include furnaces, water heaters, ranges, space heaters, and clothes dryers.  Improperly vented fireplaces and charcoal grills can also give off CO. Never use ovens or clothes dryers to heat the house.
Install carbon monoxide detectors as back-up protection, not as a substitute for proper use and maintenance of the fuel-burning appliances.  CO alarms can provide an early warning to consumers before CO builds up to a dangerous level.  The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends placing a carbon monoxide alarm in every area of your house or business. If just one alarm is installed, it should be placed near the sleeping rooms of the house. Check the batteries regularly.
Do not allow vehicles, lawnmowers, snow blowers or any gasoline powered engine to idle in a garage, basement or any enclosed space.CO can drift into the living space and create a hazardous situation.
Be prepared: In your mobile phone, program the emergency service line of your natural gas provider. PSE&G’s emergency service line is 1-800-880-PSEG (7734).
If you think high levels of CO are in your home or business: Go outside!  If there’s a medical emergency, such as someone falling unconscious, get the person outside to fresh air and call 911. Then call PSE&G’s emergency service line. Wait outside, or go to a neighbor’s home, until help arrives.
