Rise of the Robots Will Eliminate More Than 5 Million Jobs

The Robot from Lost In Space

January 18th 2016
Jill Ward

Over five million jobs will be lost by 2020 as a result of developments in genetics, artificial intelligence, robotics and other technological change, according to World Economic Forum research.

About 7 million jobs will be lost and 2 million gained as a result of technological change in 15 major developed and emerging economies, WEF founder Klaus Schwab and managing board member Richard Samans said in “The Future of Jobs.” The findings are taken from a survey of 15 economies covering about 1.9 billion workers, or about 65 percent of the world’s total workforce.

Urging council to keep trying on garage

To the editor:

I thank the Village Council for the time and effort spent trying to solve the parking issues in Ridgewood, but remain disheartened after the meeting on Jan. 6.

As Councilwoman Knudsen stated, the referendum was a vote for a parking garage on Hudson Street … not IN Hudson Street. Many residents were unaware of the size and scope of what they were being encouraged to vote for in the referendum.

Furthermore, aside from one vague, not widely circulated, and still anonymous flyer, there was very little public opposition. There were no “vote no” flyers all over town or on school property.

Would Mt. Carmel not have fully mobilized before the vote if they had any inkling the impact would be so great? Do you doubt that the 4,000 families of the parish would not have voted down the referendum had they realized there would be a 10-foot narrowing of Hudson and loss of precious on-street parking?

Overwhelmingly the residents who attended the meeting on Jan. 6 agreed to parking — even parking at that imperfect location — but not such a dramatic encroachment into the street, infringement on church life, and congestion to that area of the village in general.

As mentioned numerous times, the town while not legally required to follow its own rules and ordinances, should be expected to do so in all but emergency situations.

The word compromise was often used, but would be more easily achieved if a design was presented that stayed within the footprint of the current Hudson Street lot. Instead all of the options were variations on the same too big for the property design.

Mayor Aronsohn has stressed how important it is to get it right on parking, but isn’t that worth asking the architects to come back with some new ideas that a majority of interested parties can get behind before seeking funding from the county? We have waited decades for a solution and are nearly there, yet suddenly weeks are too long to wait for new drawings?

Lastly, while the financing scheme is not quite buttoned up, there was actually little disagreement around the costs of the garage. How sad then that the majority of council feels the need to seek financing elsewhere and hand the reins over to the county. By doing this, we would incur needless extra financing fees and perhaps ultimately lose some control over the project — design aesthetics, number of spaces dedicated to residents outside of Ridgewood, measures to take if meter revenue is below expectations, etc.

Can this really not be worked out without going that drastic, precedent setting route?

We have agreement on the need for parking, acceptance if not full agreement on location, and agreement on cost. There are a few months left for the council to figure this out together … I urge them to keep trying.

Linda Tripp: ‘Bill Had Affairs with Thousands of Women’

Bill Clinton

by BREITBART NEWS17 Jan 20164,540

In a rare interview, Linda Tripp, a pivotal figure in the Monica Lewinsky scandal, revealed on Sunday it was common knowledge while she worked in the West Wing that Bill Clinton had affairs with “thousands of women.”

Speaking on “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio,” Tripp for the first time divulged that she personally knew another White House staffer aside from Lewinsky who was also having an affair with Clinton. That unnamed staffer was mentioned by Tripp in various depositions but she has not spoken about it publicly.

She charged that Hillary Clinton not only knew about her husband’s exploits, “She made it her personal mission to disseminate information and destroy the women with whom he dallied.”

Tripp says she cringes at the sight of Clinton presenting herself as “a champion of women’s rights worldwide in a global fashion, and yet all of the women she has destroyed over the years to ensure her political viability continues is sickening to me.”

Tripp documented evidence of Lewinsky’s phone calls about her relationship with Bill Clinton and submitted the evidence to independent counsel Kenneth Starr, leading to the public disclosure of the affair. She explained to Klein that she did so because she believed her own life and Lewinsky’s were in danger, saying that Lewinsky was threatening Clinton with outing the relationship.

Tripp also used the interview to criticize what she says is the news media’s unwillingness to investigate the Clintons. She singled out and thanked Matt Drudge of the Drudge Report, declaring that without him “things would have been very, very different.”

How to beat Blue Monday – the most depressing day of the year

Depression

Linda Blair

18 JANUARY 2016 • 6:00AM

It is Blue Monday, supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

It may be useful to know that Blue Monday was in fact created in 2005 by a British holiday company. The idea was derived not from the results of any in-depth research, but instead by using a calculation involving such factors as current weather conditions and debt levels. However, while it had no basis in science, the idea caught on, and now many of us have come to dread it.

‘Why, then, ‘tis none to you, for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.’
Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2

However, you could enjoy it – in different ways perhaps, but just as much as you would enjoy a warm summer’s day. How can that be possible?

First, because you’re in control here. You can choose either to believe that today will be grim and depressing – and that’s what you’ll look out for, so that’s what you’ll find – or you can choose to believe it will be a nice day, in which case you’ll more likely to notice the high points. And although I could offer some psychological research to back up what I am saying, there’s no need. This truth – which is, by the way, the core of most psychological therapies was first given to us not by a psychologist but by a playwright and poet.

In Act 2 of Hamlet, the Prince is talking to his two friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, complaining that for him, Denmark has become a prison. They don’t see it that way at all, and disagree. Hamlet then offers up the cure for his dark mood – although he declines to take it – when he replies: ‘Why, then, ‘tis none to you, for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.’

Juanita Broaddrick Says Bill Clinton Called Her Repeatedly After Alleged Rape

Juanita Broaddrick

by BREITBART NEWS17 Jan 2016467

During a radio interview Sunday, Juanita Broaddrick revealed a shocking new detail about her history with Bill Clinton.

She says that within a few weeks after Clinton allegedly raped her, he started to call her repeatedly with the aim of meeting again.

“I was shocked to say the least that he would have the audacity to call me after what he did to me,” Broaddrick said, speaking on “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio,” the popular Sunday night radio program.

She said that just a few weeks after the 1978 alleged sexual assault, “He called the nursing home that I owned and they patched the call through to my office and I didn’t know that it was him. And he immediately said, ‘Hi, this is Bill Clinton. I was just wondering when you were coming back to Little Rock again.’

“This just caught me so off guard. I had not expected anything like this at all. And I told him I would not be coming back to Little Rock again and definitely would not ever be seeing him again. And I hung up.”

But that wasn’t the end of it. Broaddrick told Klein that Clinton, at the time the attorney general of Arkansas and candidate for governor, called the nursing home where she worked on numerous occasions throughout the next six months.

Town-house plan roils Ho-Ho-Kus

THE RECORD

HO-HO-KUS — The fate of a developer’s proposal to nestle dozens of town houses in a neighborhood of single-family homes may rely on the state’s new process of getting communities to meet affordable-housing obligations.

The plan, put forward by the Upper Saddle River-based Chamberlain Developers, is to build 45 town homes on a 3.66-acre corner lot off West Saddle River Road and Hollywood Avenue. Some of those units would be designated to help the borough meet its court-mandated obligation to promote housing for low- and moderate-income residents.

But opponents say such dense housing would be wholly out of character in an area dominated by sizable single-family homes.

“For almost 100 years, there’s been single-family development on the applicant’s property,” said Ho-Ho-Kus attorney Robert Inglima, representing four neighboring families opposed to the proposal. “So to take that property and transform it into a site for any number of multifamilyhousing units would be a significant departure from the prior zoning pattern … this is an established neighborhood we’re talking about.”

But land is gold in North Jersey, and as more residents — especially young professionals and empty-nesters — seek smaller units closer to mass transit, development firms are reacting, said Bergen Realtor Robert Abbott.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Jan. 18 Marks Federal Holiday Honoring Birthday of Late Civil Rights Leader

72981_807891422137_1864104955_n

Rep. Scott Garrett , “Today we honor the memory and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His inspiring courage and commitment to what is right stands as a testament to the human spirit and its endless desire for freedom, equality, and fairness”  and ” His tireless efforts to secure rights and freedom for all people in the United States are a testament to the power that a single individual can have in the course of history. May we all strive together to protect those same hard-won liberties today.”

The Baptist minister and activist was born in Atlanta on Jan. 15, 1929, and was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The third Monday in January was first celebrated as a national holiday in 1986.

10 Things You May Not Know About Martin Luther King Jr.

APRIL 4, 2013 By Christopher Klein

1. King’s birth name was Michael, not Martin.
The civil rights leader was born Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929. In 1934, however, his father, a pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, traveled to Germany and became inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther. As a result, King Sr. changed his own name as well as that of his 5-year-old son.

2. King entered college at the age of 15.
King was such a gifted student that he skipped grades nine and 12 before enrolling in 1944 at Morehouse College, the alma mater of his father and maternal grandfather. Although he was the son, grandson and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, King did not intend to follow the family vocation until Morehouse president Benjamin E. Mays, a noted theologian, convinced him otherwise. King was ordained before graduating college with a degree in sociology.

3. King received his doctorate in systematic theology.
After earning a divinity degree from Pennsylvania’s Crozer Theological Seminary, King attended graduate school at Boston University, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1955. The title of his dissertation was “A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman.”

4. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech was not his first at the Lincoln Memorial.
Six years before his iconic oration at the March on Washington, King was among the civil rights leaders who spoke in the shadow of the Great Emancipator during the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom on May 17, 1957. Before a crowd estimated at between 15,000 and 30,000, King delivered his first national address on the topic of voting rights. His speech, in which he urged America to “give us the ballot,” drew strong reviews and positioned him at the forefront of the civil rights leadership.

5. King was jailed 29 times.
According to the King Center, the civil rights leader went to jail nearly 30 times. He was arrested for acts of civil disobedience and on trumped-up charges, such as when he was jailed in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1956 for driving 30 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone.

6. King narrowly escaped an assassination attempt a decade before his death.
On September 20, 1958, King was in Harlem signing copies of his new book, “Stride Toward Freedom,” in Blumstein’s department store when he was approached by Izola Ware Curry. The woman asked if he was Martin Luther King Jr. After he said yes, Curry said, “I’ve been looking for you for five years,” and she plunged a seven-inch letter opener into his chest. The tip of the blade came to rest alongside his aorta, and King underwent hours of delicate emergency surgery. Surgeons later told King that just one sneeze could have punctured the aorta and killed him. From his hospital bed where he convalesced for weeks, King issued a statement affirming his nonviolent principles and saying he felt no ill will toward his mentally ill attacker.

7. King’s last public speech foretold his death.
King had come to Memphis in April 1968 to support the strike of the city’s black garbage workers, and in a speech on the night before his assassination, he told an audience at Mason Temple Church: “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now … I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. And I’m happy tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

8. Members of King’s family did not believe James Earl Ray acted alone.
Ray, a career criminal, pled guilty to King’s assassination but later recanted. King’s son Dexter met publicly with Ray in 1997 and argued for the case to be reopened. King’s widow, Coretta, believed the Mafia and local, state and federal government agencies were deeply involved in the murder. She praised the result of a 1999 civil trial in which a Memphis jury decided the assassination was the result of a conspiracy and that Ray was set up to take the blame. A U.S. Department of Justice investigation released in 2000 reported no evidence of a conspiracy.

The Dynamics of Post-O’Toole World in LD40 Come 2017

paul Aronsohn

By Max Pizarro | 01/15/16 8:09am

Peter Murphy, left, with state Senator Kevin O’Toole (R-40).

The departure come the end of 2017 from the state senate of Kevin O’Toole sets up a possible (make that probable) coming battle royale for his 4.

Names that must be considered as O’Toole’s successors include Assemblyman Scott Rumana, Assemblyman Dave Russo, Passaic County Clerk Kristin Corrado, and Wyckoff Mayor Kevin Rooney, among others.

Those are the Republicans, who have the edge in a district heavy with Passaic (pop. 104,000 in the 40th) that also contains a portion of Bergen (pop. 79,000) and towns in Morris (19,000) and Essex (12,400).

It’s a tribute to his force of personality and political gamesmanship that O’Toole made 40 his domain, by the way, despite residing in its otherwise politically irrelevant Essex sliver.

Wayne by rights offers the most (on paper) power base.

Among Democrats, names include Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn and Woodland Park Mayor Keith Kazmark. If Aronsohn and Kazmark both ran, political junkies would be treated to a Passaic v. Bergen bloodbath.

Swim clubs around North Jersey are treading water against a wave of declining membership by reaching out to new members and retooling their programming to appeal to a broader demographic.

Club managers say they’re trying to counter the national trend of waning interest, which they attribute to changing demographics, alternative recreational venues and working parents who lack the time to sit by a pool all summer.

“There’s no question we’re seeing a decline,” said Lauren Syre, manager of the Harrington Park Swim Club, whose membership has dropped over the past decade from 350 families and a long waiting list to 280 families and no waiting list. To attract new members, Harrington Park has added a snack bar and more activities, such as family barbecue night and movie night.

Like other swim clubs, it also has opened membership to a wider audience, including out-of-towners and those who want to come on a part-time basis.

The Stonybrook Swim Club in Hillsdale, Brookside Racquet & Swim Club in Allendale and the Teaneck, River Edge, Alpine, Palisades and Leonia swim clubs and Woodside Swim and Tennis Club in Edison also have implemented promotional ventures such as yoga, adult-only lap lanes, paddle boarding, live band shows, campout parties, ice cream socials and lower membership fees.

Homeland chairman: Lifting sanctions ‘bankrolls’ terrorism

Islamic Jihad philly shooter

By Mike Lillis – 01/17/16 02:06 PM EST

The Republican head of the House Homeland Security Committee is warning that the Obama administration’s decision to lift sanctions as part of the Iran nuclear deal will bankroll terrorism at the expense of the United States and its allies.

Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas) has long hammered the nuclear deal as a misguided agreement with untrustworthy adversaries –– a universal sentiment of congressional Republicans. McCaul amplified those concerns on Sunday following the administration’s announcement that it has lifted financial penalties on Iran surrounding its nuclear program.

“I have said from the start that the Iran deal was little more than a negotiation with terrorists. And now with its implementation, we can see clearly one of the dangers it will bring to the free world,” McCaul said in a statement. “The administration is unfreezing billions of dollars for the Iranian government, which will enhance its bankrolling of terrorism, perpetuate its repression, and fuel its efforts to oppose America and our allies in the region and beyond.”

President Obama on Sunday defended the move to lift sanctions, saying Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal has been “verified,” leading to the need for the United States to make good on its part of the bargain.

“Now that Iran’s actions have been verified, it can begin to receive relief from certain nuclear sanctions and gain access to its own money that had been frozen,” Obama said from the White House.

In the same breath, however, Obama announced that he’s installing new sanctions on Iran in response to a pair of ballistic missile tests conducted by Tehran late last year in defiance of United Nation’s resolutions. The dual moves highlight the sharp distinction the administration is making between Iran’s nuclear program and other actions undertaken by Tehran.

“We remain steadfast in opposing Iran’s destabilizing behavior elsewhere, including its threats against Israel and our Gulf partners, and its support for violent proxies in places like Syria and Yemen,” Obama said. “We still have sanctions on Iran for its violations of human rights, for its support of terrorism, and for its ballistic missile program. And we will continue to enforce these sanctions, vigorously.”

The ballistic missile testing “was a violation of its international obligations,” Obama added. “And as a result, the United States is imposing sanctions on individuals and companies working to advance Iran’s ballistic missile program. And we are going to remain vigilant about it.”

The start of this year has been the worst for financial markets since the onset of the Great Depression, with stock prices slumping around the world amid mounting concern over the situation in China.

A wave of selling has swept the world’s leading financial centres over the past two weeks, with the value of Britain’s leading companies falling by more than £110 billion since the start of the year.he year.

The FTSE 100 index of Britain’s biggest quoted companies fell 114 points, or 2 per cent, to 5,804 yesterday — the lowest close since November 2012. Indices in Europe and America have fared even worse: the Shanghai market was the worst performer, closing down 3.6 per cent, taking its total losses to 18 per cent for 2016. This was prompted by the price of a barrel of Brent crude dipping below the $30 mark, for the third time this week. In America the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 391 points, or 2.4 per cent, at 15,988.

I am disappointed that he chose political expediency, and self-interest ahead of the people’s interest.

I am sure the allure of the power of the Democratic Party in Bergen County is difficult to resist. I am sure Chairman Stellato made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. But there are those of us who believe in fighting for what is right and what we believe in regardless of the outcome.

Sheriff Saudino may want us to believe that his decision is about law enforcement, but we know it’s not. It’s about making a deal to secure his re-election. So let’s not for a moment pretend that this defection today has anything to do with differences with the past administration or the sheriff’s ability to carry out his duties.

It’s about nothing more than political ambition and succumbing to the allure of power and prolonging a political career.

I am prepared to work this year with the citizens of this county who want fair, honest and open government and I look forward to working with the Republican Party’s nominee for sheriff.”

RIDGEWOOD — “Wait ’til next year,” has long been the rallying cry for teams seeking a sign of hope by looking ahead to the future. The Ridgewood High School girls basketball team has taken a reverse approach, drawing its hope by forgetting the past.

Ridgewood senior Jules Rosen (24) and the Maroons have put last year’s disappointing girls basketball season behind them during their 7-2 start.

“We said ‘Last year, put it out of our minds. New team, new year’,” RHS senior captain Katie Bourque said after practice Monday. “We didn’t want our record from last year influencing us.”

The Maroons have shaken off any of the negative feelings from a 5-15 campaign derailed by injuries and inexperience and, at 7-2, are enjoying their best start to a season in more than a decade.

“Starting off high definitely sets the bar and shows each and every one of us what we’re capable of,” said senior guard Jules Rosen, another captain, who missed much of 2014-15 with an ankle injury.

A 56-26 win over Hackensack on Tuesday extended Ridgewood’s winning streak to five heading into Thursday night’s matchup at Northern Valley/Old Tappan (after press deadline). The impressive run also helped the team climb to No. 10 in the most recent Top 25 by The Record.

A village woman tells the stories of the latest athletic phenomenon known as obstacle course racing in her latest book, documenting the role it has played in the lives of its participants.

Gail Kislevitz, a Ridgewood resident and veteran of 26 marathons, has completed her latest book entitled “Get Muddy,” which relates the personal tales of nearly two dozen obstacle course racers from all over the United States and their involvement in the sport.

There are various obstacle course races held all over the country known by names such as Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash and Spartan Race Series. The races have become an exploding trend and a fast-growing sport.

It was also a subject Kislevitz was a bit nervous to tackle in a book since she had never participated in an obstacle course race before. In her previous books, she wrote about topics that were more familiar, such as running marathons and triathlons.

“I had never done one,” said Kislevitz. “But I certainly knew about them and I knew people who had done them.”
