Father James Martin ,Evening meditation: “Lazarus.”

Father James Martin

Evening meditation: “Lazarus.”

As many of you know, David Bowie died last night. What you may not know is that shortly before his death he released a meditation on life, death and, it seems to me, resurrection, in a song (and video) entitled “Lazarus.” Mr. Bowie had been suffering for the past 18 months from cancer, and so when he made this video, released a few days ago, he knew death was imminent.

Most Christians, even many non-Christians, know the story of the Raising of Lazarus as told in the Gospel of John. Mary and Martha, two of Jesus’s close friends, who live in the town of Bethany, near Jerusalem, send word that their brother is ill. But they don’t say “Our brother Lazarus is ill,” or even “Lazarus of Bethany is ill.” Instead they say, “He whom you love is ill.” It’s a sign of the deep affection that Jesus has for the man. Jesus waits several days before traveling to Bethany, where he is confronted by the two sisters who say to him, separately, “If you had been here my brother would not have died.” Jesus then is brought to the tomb, where he weeps openly. Then he stands at the tomb, asks for the stone to be rolled away, and calls out, “Lazarus, come forth!” The dead man emerges, “his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth.” And Jesus says to the crowd, “Untie him, and let him go.”

In his video, David Bowie, who like Lazarus is bandaged, sings, “Look up here, I’m in heaven. I’ve got scars that can’t be seen. I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen. Everybody knows me now.” In the first part of the video, Bowie writhes in his bandages in a hospital bed; in the second part “another” Bowie stands and dances, freed from his bandages, in the same room. At the close of the video he enters into a dark closet.

The video is rich with imagery, and will speak to people in various ways.

For me it’s a complex image of life, death and the afterlife. (As well as sight and blindness: as he lays in bed, his eyes are covered by small metal bolts, which may call to mind stories of Jesus’s healing of the blind.) Much of the video resonated deeply with me. On the one hand, one will indeed enter into God’s presence carrying with us all the “drama” of our lives. One will also be welcomed into the presence of those who know us, and into a place where we will be known fully, by God. And one will be freed of the limitations of physical pain and of the confining “bandages” of our existence.

On the other hand, the “scars,” I believe, will be seen by those in heaven, God included. For nothing is lost to God. We are welcomed, scars and all. Remember that when Jesus returns from the dead he shows his disciples his physical wounds, his scars. The Risen One carries in himself, and on himself, the experiences, visible and invisible, of his humanity.

At the close of the video, Bowie recedes into a dark closet. It’s a reverse image of conclusion of the story of Lazarus, who, in the Gospels emerges from a dark tomb into the light. (Needless to say, it may be a Johannine image, a nod to Bowie’s sexuality, or something else entirely.)

It’s not surprising that someone would struggle with issues of illness, death and the afterlife. Even believers do. And I’m not sure what Bowie’s religious or spiritual beliefs were. But it’s a gift when an artist shares himself or herself with the world in so personal and creative a way, particularly in the midst of the final struggle.

“Oh I’ll be free/Just like that bluebird,” he sings. “Oh I’ll be free/Ain’t that just like me?”

As an artist, David Bowie always confounded expectations. Perhaps, like most of us, he struggled with a God who confounded him near the end. Now may that same God surprise him. With new life.

May he be untied and let go.

U.S. Folk Musician to Win Islamic State Hearts and Minds—with Songs of Peace

Oregon folk singer James Twyman

by DANIEL NUSSBAUM15 Jan 20161,907

A Middle East on fire, as the Islamic State burns and slashes its way toward its goal of a global Caliphate.

A confident president, who believes that armed terrorist fighters “on the backs of pickup trucks” do not represent an existential threat to America.

A divided field of GOP presidential candidates, who debate the best method to confront the threat. Airstrikes. Economic damage. “Boots on the ground.”

The world waits for an answer.

One man has found it.

Oregon folk singer James Twyman plans to travel to Syria next week to confront the mass-murdering terrorist group — with songs of peace.

The Portland native and self-described “Peace Troubadour” will perform a concert at a venue in ISIS-controlled territory in Syria on January 31, according to Fox News. Armed with nothing more than a guitar and a prayer, Twyman believes that focusing on positivity can held put an end to the devastating bloodshed.

“It’s going to be pretty powerful,” the singer told Fox. “When people come together and focus on something in a positive way… there’s scientific evidence that it can change things for the better.”

Twyman reportedly plans to depart for Israel on January 20. From there, he’ll cross over the country’s northern border with Syria, and meet with contacts who are helping to plan the peace concert. Twyman says that Christian, Islamic and Jewish leaders — and more than 2,500 Tibetan monks — will join with him as he sings song infused with the traditional prayers of each of the three religions.

The singer is also simultaneously organizing a worldwide prayer vigil, to be conducted on the day he performs in Syria.

Controversy engulfs Ridgewood church; officials praise deeds; ex-members call it a cult

The World Mission Society Church of God in Ridgewood, New Jersey

THE RECORD

Two years ago, 1,200 young people wearing bright yellow shirts from churches connected to the World Mission Society Church of God in Ridgewood filled an auditorium to receive emergency response training, prompting Bergen County officials to praise their unbridled enthusiasm, which included a rendition of the wave.

“We love you,” they chanted in return.

Former church members say they, too, were overflowing with love when they joined the church, but at some point saw another side to a rapidly growing religion rooted in a belief that a South Korean woman in her 70s is the physical manifestation of God. These ex-members — from New Jersey as well as other parts of the country — offered similar, independent accounts of being lured into the church, slowly at first, without being told all of its beliefs, then frightened into devotion and donating large portions of their savings by talk of the impending end of the world — in 2012.

Some of them, as well as several experts, have gone so far as to call the church a cult.

Leaders of the Ridgewood church, an offshoot of the South Korean World Mission Society Church of God, which boasts more than 2 million followers worldwide, responded to its critics by saying in statements to The Record that the label “cult” is a form of “religious intolerance” used to denigrate groups with “certain views that are contrary to the norm.” They denied preaching that the world would end four years ago.

And in a court filing, they said their “unfamiliar beliefs,” which include devotion to Zahng Gil-Jah, or the Heavenly Mother, left them “vulnerable to persecution as any new religion throughout history.” They called accusations made against them “fabrications.”

Graydon Parking lot with Shuttle Service a Simple Alternative to massive Garage Building

Graydon_Parking_lot_theridgewoodblog
January 17,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, Russ Forenza suggestion at the January 6th meeting to use the Graydon Parking lot , Graydon Pool parking is a tremendous asset that is never used , shuttle buses , would be a simple easy solution . The idea would be to push all the employee parking into the Graydon lot .Yes we know it was tried before and true it failed .But now parking rates are significantly higher and we could allow employees and business owners to park either for Free or at a greatly reduced rate and shoppers could also park there at a reduced rate . Shuttle service would have to run continuously during the day at regular short intervals .
It has been reported on this blog many times over the past 6 years , that often the parking spaces are already full on streets like Oak Street by 8 am in the morning when no businesses are even opened . The  Graydon parking along with a shuttle service would siphon off  many full time employees , encourage them to spend money in town and be far more ecologically friendly than circling the village in cars looking for parking . Non compliant business could be fined ,both the employee for parking in the wrong place  and the business owner .
Perhaps the Graydon lot could be used seasonally like shopping centers that don’t allow employee parking during seasonally peak periods . Garden State Plaza  for instance bars employees from parking in certain areas during the Christmas rush.
Another idea is to also add more bicycle racks in the central business district so the down town would be more bike friendly . Parker’s at Graydon could bike back and forth during warmer weather if they desired and the shuttle should be made “bike friendly”.

Is this how “somebody’s going to pay for this” actually works?

Village Council Meeting

January 17,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ , A resident who recently spoke out at a Village Council meeting in opposition to a plan being promoted by the “Council majority” reported to me that within a few days of making those comments, a Village of Ridgewood employee visited his/her home, conducted an unannounced property maintenance inspection, and issued a summons to the resident.

Wondering if the timing of the inspection was in any way related to the comments he/she made at the recent Village Council meeting, or just a coincidence, the resident informally checked with several other people who had publicly voiced opposition to a “Council majority” plan and found, surprisingly, that a few others had also recently received summonses for property maintenance related issues.

The staff of The Ridgewood Blog wonders how many of you out there received a summons in connection with a property maintenance related issue shortly after speaking at a Village Council meeting?

We’d love to hear from you with as many specifics as you’d care to share.

Village Ignores Rare Bald Eagles and Black Crested Heron sighted on Schedler property

bald eagle

January 17,2016
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, 4 American Bald Eagles and a black crested heron , all on the endangered species list. According to the Conserve Wildlife Foundation Bald Eagles are extremely sensitive to human disturbance. At no time should anyone approach nesting eagles. People who want to observe or photograph eagles and who come too close may actually cause the birds to abandon a nest. In 2014, there were 156 pairs of bald eagles monitored in the state of New Jersey. Apparently the Village of Ridgewood is well aware  https://mods.ridgewoodnj.net/…/2015schedlergrantupdate.pdf if see Page 16 of a document Roberta signed . Unfortunately the page was magically removed from the Village website.

Included with this article is a copy of the original and we posted it for your viewing pleasure .If you scroll down you will see where these birds are listed but they checked N/A disregarding their endangered species classification. n a recent council meeting Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld called them some animals who happened to be running around at that location.

N.J. Rep. Scott Garrett: I have no malice toward gays

scottt_garrett2_theridgewoodblog

By Jonathan D. Salant | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
on January 16, 2016 at 8:05 AM, updated January 16, 2016 at 10:17 AM

WASHINGTON — Under fire for reportedly refusing to contribute to a Republican group because it backed gay candidates, U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett said his opposition to same-sex marriage comes from his faith, and he does not “have malice” toward any group of people.

“My colleagues and my constituents know that I am a devout man of faith, and therefore I support traditional marriage,” Garrett said in a statement released by his campaign late Friday. “Calling me names or implying that I have malice in my heart for any person or group of people is false and completely disingenuous.”

Garrett (R-5th Dist.) has faced sharp criticism for reportedly telling fellow Republican members of the House Financial Services Committee that he was not contributing to the House GOP’s fundraising arm because it backed gay candidates. Garrett has never denied the reports. His statement was the first lengthy response since the controversy erupted last summer.

He and U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-4th Dist.) are among 154 House Republicans — a majority of the conference — who are sponsoring legislation to allow groups and individuals to cite their religious beliefs and deny service to same-sex couples.

U.S. Rep. Scott Garrett’s reported remarks on gays has Democrats looking at winning the congressional district.

“Like all Americans who exercise their right of free speech and religion, I make contributions to people and organizations who share my beliefs on important issues, in this case traditional marriage,” Garrett said. “Since then, I’ve continued my support of the Republican Party and the ideals we represent on behalf of our country and every American.”

Garrett called the criticism an effort by the “Washington establishment” to “distract from my work to revive the economy and hold the government accountable by portraying me as something I’m not.”

He said that several prominent Democrats, President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton and former U.S. Secretary of State Hiilary Clinton, also initially opposed same-sex marriage.

Was Obama “a bigot before he changed his view on traditional marriage in 2012 when it was politically convenient?” Garrett said. “Or Hillary Clinton? Or President Bill Clinton?”

Panic: Clinton Campaign Underestimated Sanders Strengths, Allies Say

Bernie Sanders

By PATRICK HEALYJAN. 16, 2016

Advisers to Hillary Clinton, including former President Bill Clinton, believe that her campaign made serious miscalculations by forgoing early attacks on Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and failing to undercut his archliberal message before it grew into a political movement that has now put him within striking distance of beating Mrs. Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire.

According to Democrats close to the Clintons and involved with her campaign, Mrs. Clinton and the former president are also unnerved by the possibility that Mr. Sanders will foment a large wave of first-time voters and liberals that will derail her in Iowa, not unlike Barack Obama’s success in 2008, which consigned Mrs. Clinton to a third-place finish. They have asked her advisers about the strength of the campaign’s data modeling and turnout assumptions in Iowa, given that her 2008 campaign’s predictions were so inaccurate.

As the Democratic rivals prepare for what is likely to be a contentious televised debate on Sunday night, the Clintons are particularly concerned that her “rational message,” in the words of an aide, is not a fit with a restless Democratic primary electorate. Allies and advisers of the Clintons say Mr. Sanders is clearly connecting with voters through his emotional, inspiring rallying cry that the American economic and political systems are rigged for the wealthy and powerful. By contrast, Mrs. Clinton has beenstressing her electability and questioning the costs of Mr. Sanders’s ideas.

Fair Lawn, N.J. Residents Baffled By Loud Noises In Night

ET

January 15, 2016 11:09 PM

FAIR LAWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Friday night was far from the first nervous one for residents of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, who have been plagued by loud booming sounds for about a week.

As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported, the source of the nuisance is a mystery.

“We were, like, looking at each other like, ‘What was that?’” said Danielle McManus.

It happened twice in the past week to McManus and her family. While inside their home in a usually very quiet Fair Lawn neighborhood, things went bump in the night.

“If we didn’t know any better, it almost sounds like a cannon,” McManus said, “It was so deep and just like, echoey.”

Elsewhere in the neighborhood along the Passaic River, residents say they have heard loud booms as early as 6 p.m. and as late as 2 a.m..

Ridgewood Restaurant Smith Brothers to close in February

Smith brothers
January 15,2016

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Long time Ridgewood Restaurant Smith Brothers is rumored to be closing February 1st. It will become an Italian restaurant.
We are not surprised. As much as we always tried to like the place you never knew what you were going to get when you ordered. We checked and they only got 2 out of 5 stars on Yelp.

Most of the complaints echoed ours over the years were about service and then the food.Sources tell us not 1 employee will be retained, even those working for over 10 years.Seems the new place will be starting fresh.

For many years they were known for live music and hosted countless local bands .

Readers remarked that they felt management was the problem, they treated everyone like crap. Another Reader said , the wife and I had dinner there some years ago near the table by the bar. Owner berated a poor 16 year old busboy right in front of us.
