Tedesco calls for explanation after report details assaults by patients at Bergen Regional

One day after a federal report showed workers at Bergen Regional Medical Center had faced waves of assaults by patients, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco called for the county-owned hospital’s private management company to immediately explain the incidents and present a plan to fix the safety problems.

In a statement released Friday, Tedesco said he’d contacted the hospital and was scheduling a meeting with its management staff.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration findings, released Thursday, detailed cases in which at least eight hospital employees were attacked this year by patients.

As a result of the citations listed in the OSHA report the agency has recommended a $13,600 fine.

Patients had barricaded employees in rooms, punched a lab technician who was trying to draw blood, kicked and bitten a security guard and pushed a nurse to the floor while the nurse intervened during one patient’s attack on another patient, according to the report.

The hospital has been run for the past 15 years by a private management company through a contract with the Bergen County Improvement Authority, according to Tedesco’s release. The company’s contract expires in March 2017.

Tedesco said he was “alarmed” at the OSHA citations of the “private management company for failing to protect the hospital’s employees.”

The pilot who crash-landed a small plane into a Cresskill recreational field desperately searched for a safe place to land, passing by two other fields because they were filled with people before he finally made a dead-engine touchdown behind a local swim club, authorities said.

The pilot, Jack Rosenberg of Spring Valley, N.Y., and Erik Pearson were on a routine patrol for the Coast Guard Auxiliary over the Hudson River when the engine faltered.

When Rosenberg couldn’t make it to Teterboro Airport with his sputtering engine, he tried to make an emergency landing in Tenafly but decided against that because the field was full of people, Cresskill Police Chief Ed Wrixon said.

After finding a Cresskill baseball field occupied, the pilot crashed near Regan Field behind the Cresskill Swim Club late Thursday afternoon just hours before youth sports teams were due to practice.

A founding member of the long-running “James Bond gang” that had been targeting high-end homes in affluent neighborhoods across the tri-state for years has been arrested, prosecutors said Thursday.

Bruce “Cap” Anderson, 48, of Queens, was arrested Tuesday in connection with an ongoing investigation that netted the arrests of several other alleged members of the gang in 2014. Anderson and five other defendants are named in a 24-count indictment tied to the burglary and trafficking of stolen property.

The group of burglars had been operating in New Jersey for years and expanded to Rockland County in 2013, according to police. At one burglary in Orangetown in early January, thieves lifted $30,000 worth of jewelry.

Authorities in New Jersey launched an investigation in 2014 after more than two dozen high-end homes in Bergen, Morris and Somerset counties were burglarized over a period of several months. The burglaries had many similarities and were identical in the manner in which they were carried out.

Ridgewood NJ, Writer/Director Joseph Robert Redl and Executive Producer Nicholas Juzdan have started crowdfunding for their third short film together. They have produced short films like Daniel In The Lion’s Den (2014) and X’s On Trees (2015).

Both are local North Jersey residents Nicholas Juzdan of Woodland Park and Joseph Robert Redl of Ridgewood have teamed up again, producing their third  short film, entitled “Kingwood.” The duo’s first short film, “Xs on Trees,” was screened earlier this year to rave revues.

Synopsis:

When Nick and Jeff’s father pass away, the vices they inherited fuel a story of greed, betrayal, and what it truly means to be on your own.

The film takes place on location at Joseph Robert Redl’s childhood farm house. Joseph likes to incorporate something personal from his life in all his work; and so the farm house was something he wanted to share.

This script is a draw in from the first line to the last and we can’t wait to bring it to the screen.

The Village of Ridgewood’s Green Team Advisory Committee has created a voluntary Green Business Recognition Program to promote green practices and increase the visibility of those entities that have successfully demonstrated a commitment to sustainability.

All privately owned businesses with a physical location within the bounds of the Village of Ridgewood may participate in the Green Business Recognition Program. Participation in this free program is entirely voluntary.Interested parties may download and complete Ridgewood’s Green Business Application and Checklist. The completed checklist and any supplemental application materials should be submitted to the attention of the Green Team electronically ([email protected]). Businesses are encouraged to contact the Green Team for assistance—a team member will be dispatched for an in-person meeting to facilitate the application process.

Businesses that satisfy the requirements for recognition will be designated a Green Business by Ridgewood’s Green Team. A representative from the Green Team will present each recognized business with a certificate suitable for public display. The name of each recognized business will be posted on social media outlets administered by the Green Team as well as other websites as appropriate. Ridgewood farmers’ market helps produce for those in need

For the past 15 years, the Ridgewood Farmers’ Market has returned to the village every Sunday to sell its fresh, locally grown produce to northern New Jersey customers, who happily peruse the various stands to see which products are available each week.

But when the day ends and the unsold fresh fruits and vegetables are left over, where do they end up?

A few years ago, a group of volunteers from Ridgewood’s First Presbyterian Church found an answer for that question.

Mary Shaw, a church member who coordinates the volunteers, got the idea as she passed the Farmers’ Market on the west side of the train station and wondered if the vendors would donate the leftover food.

“I just had this idea one Sunday a few years ago to ask the farmers to consider giving their leftover produce to food pantries,” Shaw said. “They were very willing and happy to do it. These farmers are incredibly generous individuals to share their goods in this way.”

Additionally, another participant in the Farmers’ Market, Baker’s Bounty, a bakery based in Linden, has been donating large bags of various fresh baked breads to the volunteers.

A group of approximately eight volunteers are gathered from a pool of 35 and meet at the Ridgewood train station each Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Sprinklers will be silenced around the village as dry weather has forced Ridgewood Water to initiate severe restrictions on irrigation.

On Friday, residents in Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Ridgewood learned they could face stiff fines should they opt to use anything other than a handheld hose with a spray nozzle to water their lawns.

Ridgewood Water has imposed its most oppressive restrictions, deeming the situation “critical.”

Use of these spray nozzles will be restricted to just two days a week; those with odd numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays and Saturdays with even numbered homes able to irrigate Wednesdays and Sundays.

No irrigation is permitted on Mondays, Thursdays or Fridays until further notice.

According to Ridgewood officials, reserves need to be maintained for household use and for firefighters who’ll need water and enough pressure to fight potential fires.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. job growth slowed in August, but the unemployment rate dropped to a near 7-1/2-year low and wages accelerated, keeping alive prospects of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike later this month.

Nonfarm payrolls increased 173,000 last month after an upwardly revised gain of 245,000 in July, the Labor Department said on Friday. August’s gain was the smallest in five months as the factory sector lost the most jobs since July 2013.

The jobs count, however, may have been tarnished by a statistical fluke that has often led to sharp upward revisions to payroll figures for August after initial weak readings.

Indicating the hiring slowdown was likely not reflective of the economy’s true health, the jobless rate fell two-tenths of a point to 5.1 percent, its lowest level since April 2008.

In addition, payrolls data for June and July were revised to show 44,000 more jobs created than previously reported, bringing the average job gains for the past three months to a solid 221,000. Average hourly earnings increased 8 cents, the biggest rise in seven months and the length of the average workweek also expanded.

Record 94,031,000 Americans Not in Labor Force; Participation Rate Stuck at 38-Year Low for 3rd Straight Month

(CNSNews.com) – A record 94,031,000 Americans were not in the American labor force last month — 261,000 more than July — and the labor force participation rate stayed stuck at 62.6 percent, a 38-year low, for a third straight month in August, the Labor Department reported on Friday, as the nation heads into the Labor Day weekend.

The number of Americans not in the labor force has continued to rise, partly because of retiring baby-boomers and fewer workers entering the workforce.

In August, according to BLS, the nation’s civilian noninstitutional population, consisting of all people 16 or older who were not in the military or an institution, reached 251,096,000. Of those, 157,065,000 participated in the labor force by either holding a job or actively seeking one.

The 157,065,000 who participated in the labor force equaled only 62.6 percent of the 251,096,000 civilian noninstitutional population — the same as it was in July and June. Not since October 1977, when the participation rate dropped to 62.4, has the percentage been this low.

CRESSKILL – A small plane on a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol crash-landed in the borough late Thursday afternoon, leaving two people seriously injured, officials said.

The crash was reported near the Cresskill Swim Club, not far from an athletic field.

The plane was occupied by two people who were on a routine patrol of the Hudson River, a U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman said Thursday. Auxiliary members are volunteers working on behalf of the Coast Guard, the spokeswoman added.

Officials confirmed that two people on the Cessna suffered serious injuries and were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. Further information on their conditions was not immediately released.

Both occupants of the plane were alert and conscious when first responders arrived, according to Bergen County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Anthony Cureton.

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said it received reports that a Cessna 172 aircraft “landed in trees” around 5 p.m. FAA officials did not immediately release details on the crash.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson said the agency would investigate the crash.

2 Vehicles Sent Crashing Into Paramus Wendy’s After Collision

PARAMUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Two vehicles crashed into each other, and then both slammed into a Wendy’s in Paramus, New Jersey late Thursday.

As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported, the very same restaurant was also hit by a car back in June.

Workers late Thursday night were examining a support beam put in place to shore up the damaged restaurant, after the minivan and car crashed into it.

The drivers were both headed east on Route 4 near the Paramus Road exit just before 5 p.m. Thursday – on of them behind the wheel of a car, the other a minivan, Paramus police said.

Witnesses said the driver of the red Toyota Corolla was trying to get into the Wendy’s parking lot when it cut off the minivan, sending them both into the Wendy’s at 190 Highway 4, police told 1010 WINS.

Photos showed both vehicles jumped the curb and the minivan ended up inside the Wendy’s.

Ridgewood Water Stage 4 Water Restrictions Now In force

Dear E-Notice Resident,

Due to the very dry conditions that we have experienced over the last few months, we have deemed it necessary to invoke a Stage 4 irrigation ban. Beginning immediately, there will be no irrigation allowed other than using hand-held spray nozzles – these hand-helds can only be used on Tuesdays and Saturdays for odd-numbered houses and Wednesdays and Sundays for even-numbered houses. No irrigation of any kind is allowed on Mondays, Thursdays or Fridays.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of obeying these restrictions – this is a public safety issue – our firefighters need to have the necessary water and water pressure to be able to fight fires and we also need to maintain reserves for household use.

As you are aware we have ratcheted up enforcement over the last several weeks issuing over 50 summonses and hundreds of warnings. This has had some impact but unfortunately we need to take this further – so, I have taken the additional step of appointing more Village employees who will have the authority to issue summonses in order to achieve a higher rate of compliance.

We will continually monitor our water supply. Hopefully we will not need to also ban hand-held watering but this may still be a possibility…..let’s hope for some rain! For up-to-the-minute restriction status, please visit our website at water.ridgewoodnj.net.

RIDGEWOOD — The opening of the 2015 football season is a week away for Ridgewood High School, and there is still plenty of jockeying for positions as the team prepares to break a five-game losing streak that put a major damper on the 2014 campaign.

Before they get going for real, the Maroons will play a game scrimmage tonight against a Ramapo team that should be a strong test for the defense. The 7 o’clock tilt should facilitate the finalization of starting units over the first three quarters.

A couple of spots opened up due to preseason circumstances. Senior fullback/linebacker Cooper Telesco will be sidelined for the entire season after undergoing surgery for a torn labrum in July. Two-way lineman Terrel Stephen moved to Indiana over the summer, leaving Ridgewood with some gaping holes.

“Any time you lose arguably your two best players it is a big blow,” RHS head coach Chuck Johnson said. “What I’m most pleased about is that this group is not letting that define them. They’ve stepped up to the challenge of carrying on, and they’ve worked very hard to prepare for this season.”
