Ridgewood’s Tyler Clementi Foundation (TCF) Helps Teens Fight Cyberbullying Through Film

Tyler Clementi Foundation

Ridgewood NJ, Since the Tyler Clementi Foundation began a partnership with AT&T a few months ago, they have been able to expand our reach and work to end bullying. TCF collaborated on an extensive poll of New York-area teens and parents to uncover attitudes and behaviors related to cyberbullying. The results were substantial. Nearly half of all teens say they have been bullied online. 8 in 10 know someone who has been the victim of cyberbullying.Read the full results of our poll here!

On May 14th TCF joined AT&T and the All American High School Film Festival in kicking off an exciting opportunity for 100 New York-area student filmmakers, as they compete at the national Teen Film Festival. The teens created films focused on the personal effects of cyberbullying. We are honored to be a partner for this incredible event. The films produced and the relationships built during this weekend will create more compassion and respect at high schools across the New York area.

The videos are a powerful and emotional lens into the experience of being cyber-bullied, by teens and for teens. Check out one of the submissions below:

The Ridgewood Public Library’s 13th annual Reel Voices Film Festival concludes next week with the showing of “In Transit.”

The documentary, which will be shown on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m., offers an in-depth look at the passengers riding Amtrak’s “Empire Builder” train line, the company’s busiest, as it moves about the northwestern United States.

“I like to think of ‘In Transit’ as a documentary portrait of America,” the film’s director Lynn True explained in a recent interview. “Through the stories of passengers aboard trains traversing the country, we’re given unique access into the hearts and minds of everyday people, learning about their histories, hopes and dreams, ultimately giving us an intimate snapshot of our country today.”

While the movie was directed by True, it was actually the idea of famed filmmaker Albert Maysles, who died in March.

A popular annual event for film buffs is set to return to the Ridgewood Public Library starting tonight.

The Reel Voices Film Festival, now in its 13th consecutive year, is scheduled to open at 7:30 p.m.

Roberta Panjwani, the librarian in charge of the event, explained the process she takes when choosing the films. She views around 50 before selecting about five films.

“Each year I attend many documentary screenings at the Tribeca Film Festival” in New York City, Panjwani said, explaining that by doing this, she “can get a good sense of which films are really strong and those that will resonate with our community.”

Panjwani said that she also views films from other parts of the metropolitan area, in addition to obtaining preview copies from films shown around the country and internationally.

“The common thread is that each [film] takes on a humanitarian issue,” she said via email, “whether it be the aspect of the Vietnam War from all perspectives (‘Last Days in Vietnam’), the power of film in saving people from isolation (‘The Wolfpack’), the role of sports in opening up a future to inner-city students (‘In the Game’), or the unique connections made between unlikely strangers on a train (‘In Transit’).”

The event came about after Laura Barney, a member of the Friends of the Ridgewood Library, attended the American Museum of Natural History’s Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival, according to Panjwani.

North Jersey Duo looks to Crowdfunding for their third short film together

September 04,2015

the  staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Writer/Director Joseph Robert Redl and Executive Producer Nicholas Juzdan have started crowdfunding for their third short film together. They have produced short films like Daniel In The Lion’s Den (2014) and X’s On Trees (2015).

Both are local North Jersey residents Nicholas Juzdan of Woodland Park and Joseph Robert Redl of Ridgewood have teamed up again, producing their third  short film, entitled “Kingwood.” The duo’s first short film, “Xs on Trees,” was screened earlier this year to rave revues.

Synopsis:

When Nick and Jeff’s father pass away, the vices they inherited fuel a story of greed, betrayal, and what it truly means to be on your own.

The film takes place on location at Joseph Robert Redl’s childhood farm house. Joseph likes to incorporate something personal from his life in all his work; and so the farm house was something he wanted to share.

This script is a draw in from the first line to the last and we can’t wait to bring it to the screen.

An exclusive screening of the digital series “One and Done” will take place at Bow Tie Cinemas on June 25.

“One and Done” is a comedy about four middle-aged men who reunite their high school basketball team.

“It’s a brand-new series that tells the story of middle-age through comedy on the basketball court,” said executive producer and Ridgewood resident Aaron Letscher. “The format of the show pushes the boundaries of both traditional TV and movies, which will make for a truly unique viewing experience.”

The storyline was inspired by the lives of writers Matt Letscher and Nipper Knapp, who also appear in the series. Both played on basketball leagues while in their 20s.

“Now in their mid-40s, the thought of playing competitive basketball is both exciting and daunting,” Letscher said. “‘One and Done’ really came from their experiences and what happens to both your body and mind once you hit a certain age.”

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS

A touch of Hollywood descended upon the Central Business District this week as the red carpet was rolled out for filmmakers taking part in the Ridgewood Guild’s fifth annual International Film Festival.

This year, the festival is truly an international one with entries accepted from Canada, France, Austria and Iran, some of which will be featured on the additional third night at the Ridgewood Public Library on Friday.

“We’re so proud to be calling ourselves an international film festival this year,” said Ridgewood Guild President Tony Damiano. “We received films from 18 different countries and you’ll see them over the course of this evening and we’ve expanded to a third night on Friday evening.”

With a full roster of student films lined up for opening night, many of the festival’s youngest participants attended on Wednesday evening, excitedly posing for photographs in front of the movie premiere backdrop.

Karlee King, a senior at Paramus High School and a newcomer to the festival world, brought three short experimental films with her that feature the common theme of shooting video at abandoned locations.

PASSAIC VALLEY TODAY

woodland park – Local resident Nicholas Juzdan is producing a short film, along with writer/director Joseph Robert Redl of Ridgewood. Both are students of Montclair State University (MSU). Juzdan, who is also a graduate of Passaic Valley High School Class of 2011, recently received a degree in entertainment marketing business from MSU. Redl is currently a junior, majoring in filmmaking.

“This is my second film,” said Juzdan. “It’s a short film and we’ve been putting our cash and crew together. We’ve been trying to raise money for various things in the budget for stuff like casting, props, sets, which we needed to build all those things ourselves.”

According to Juzdan, the film, named “Xs On Trees,” centers on a character named Duncan, who has just been dumped by his girlfriend. He begins to realize what life is really about and learns these lessons with the help of some new and not so new friends.

“It’s about the whole process of growing up and going through break-ups,” he explained. “Duncan has trouble moving forward after his last relations but with the help of an older guy named ‘Pop,’ he eventually does. Pop teaches Duncan about growing up and eventually moving forward.”

Juzdan added that the project is listed on Indiegogo.com for the production to raise funds to complete the short film.

Ridgewood-based filmmakers appear in New Jersey Film Festival

THE RECORD

FILM

WHAT: New Jersey Film Festival.

WHEN: Sept. 11 to Oct. 16. Programs begin at either 6 or 7 p.m., check listings. “She-Wolf” will be screened at 7 p.m. Oct. 5.

WHERE: Rutgers University (various locations), New Brunswick; 848-932-8482 or njfilmfest.com.

HOW MUCH: $10 general admission.

Ridgewood-based filmmakers Daniel Shapiro and Alex Topaller have made videos for Pharrell Williams and Michael Jackson. They’ve made commercials for Ford, Bloomberg and Beech-Nut.

Now they’re claiming the privilege familiar to all Christmas shoppers who’ve ever bought themselves a little present while in the store for others. “She Wolf,” their first narrative film, is a little something for themselves.

“We do a lot of music videos, we do a lot of commercials, and at some point we wanted to shoot something creative, something for ourselves,” says Shapiro, a Hawthorne resident, whose 18-minute film will be screened as part of the New Jersey Film Festival at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. The festival begins Sept. 11.

The 7 p.m. Oct. 5 screening of “She Wolf” will be at Voorhees Hall No. 105, 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick: one of several locations where more than 30 films — shorts and features, from far-out experimental to near-mainstream — will be screened this fall. Shapiro and Topaller will both be present at the screening to answer questions.
