The Historic Zabriskie-Schedler House is not “a crumbling 200-year-old house”, in fact, the information could not be more inaccurate. There is a structural investigation I would love to give the Record that clearly reaffirms the structural integrity of the 1820’s historic house. We can always find space for a 90′ multi-purpose field in a much better location but the destruction of an Historic house is a final death sentence for the Village and for history.. The Zabriskie-Schedler House has already been included in the Village of Ridgewood Master Plan, under “Historic Preservation Plan Element” the Village’s list of historic sites under the following criteria:
A. Important to the general development of the area and the unique cultural heritage of the community.
B. Significant example of an architectural style or period.
C. Representative example of vernacular architecture of the area.
This information has recently been reaffirmed during the re-examination of the Master Plan.
Funds are needed urgently to stabilize the Historic Zabriskie-Schedler House. Last year, The Ridgewood Historic Commission echoed the concerns of many village residents and submitted a request for a “Certificate of Eligibility”. This request was granted and on May 2, 2014 by the Department of Environmental Protection, Natural and Historic Resources, Historic Preservation Office, Trenton. The letter states, among other historic attributes, that “the Zabriskie-Schedler House is individually eligible for listing in New Jersey and in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C as an example of third period Jersey Dutch framed houses.

A new poll released on Monday shows that support for Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran continues to unravel. According to the poll from Monmouth University, only 41 percent of Democrats believe Congress should approve the president’s nuclear deal with the Iranian regime.
The numbers only get worse among independents and Republicans. Overall, just 27 percent of those polled believe Congress should approve the controversial nuclear deal with Iran. A majority of Republicans (55 percent) and a plurality of independents (33 percent) believe Congress should reject the deal

Why do I write so much about the myth that financial market deregulation caused the financial crisis? Because that false narrative has spread so far and wide. Even some folks who are otherwise friendly to free-markets have bought into it.
So here’s one more shot: financial markets were not deregulated in any meaningful way during the last 100 years.
It is true that federal regulators changed many rules and regulations over the century, but the notion that the new rules amounted to a lack of rules is dead wrong. Federal regulators have increasingly told banks and non-bank financial firms what they can do and how they can do it.
Last week, when discussing this topic, my friend Mark Calabria mentioned some evidence I had missed: Todd Conover’s Congressional testimony in the 1980s.
Conover was the head of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) from 1981 to 1985, and his 1984 testimony (all 655 pages) is available on the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank’s website. The testimony is yet another piece of evidence that banks were not deregulated.
But it also serves as evidence that Dodd-Frank and the new Basel III capital rules’ emphasis on so-called macro-prudential regulation is not as new as regulators would like us to believe.
As they tell the story, the new regulations will make markets safer because now, finally, regulators will focus onsystem-wide safety (a macro-view) as opposed to focusing only on the safety of individual banks.

On Sunday, multiple New York Times bestselling author and syndicated radio host Mark Levin packed Bookends Bookstore in Ridgewood, New Jersey, with fans eager to get a signed copy of his latest book Plunder and Deceit.
The book has received widespread praise for its incisive look at the breakdown of our governmental system as well as the perverse mentality that government dependency has spawned for Americans who would never willingly impoverish their children yet do so in the name of statism.
According to one attendee at the Sunday book signing, Levin signed over 1000 books. Pictures showed large crowds lined up both inside and outside the store. Levin has packed events for the last several weeks—he is scheduled to speak at the Reagan Library on August 16 and, according to sources familiar with the event, the event sold out of all 1,500 tickets within minutes of tickets becoming available.
Fox News host Megyn Kelly is defending her questioning of businessman Donald Trump during the first Republican presidential debate, saying she approached the candidates from multiple angles.
“If you can’t get past me, how are you going to handle Vladimir Putin?” Kelly said with a smile during an interview on Fox News’s “Mediabuzz” aired Sunday.
“We had anticipated that some in the audience might boo us during the middle of our questions,” Kelly said. “They can boo us, and some people are booing us now on Twitter. But that’s all part of it.”
“He felt attacked — it wasn’t an attack, it was a fair question. But I get it. He’s in the arena and so am I,” Kelly said, alluding to asking Trump about previous remarks disparaging women’s appearances.
The interview with Kelly was taped shortly before Trump escalated his feud with the network after the debate, saying on CNN that she had “blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her… wherever.”
Kelly has so far not commented on that remark, which drew widespread condemnation from Trump’s GOP rivals over the weekend. He has since clarified he was going to finish by saying “ears or nose.”
Chinese hackers have infiltrated the private email accounts for “many” top Obama administration officials, NBC News reports.
The espionage scheme stretches back to at least April 2010 and is still ongoing, according to a secret briefing document and a senior official quoted by NBC.
While the Beijing-backed digital spies have not been able to crack government email accounts, private email accounts hosted by companies like Google have been widely compromised.
The senior official told NBC News that “all top national security and trade officials” have been targeted in the email grab.”
“In addition to pilfering potentially useful intelligence information, the hackers apparently also stole email address books to launch targeted cyberattacks on the officials’ contacts,” the official said.
The revelation raises questions about whether former secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private email was among those compromised during this period.
A 20-year-old New Jersey man has been charged on terror-related counts for allegedly trying to help organize a “small army” of ISIS fighters in New York and the Garden State, federal prosecutors said Monday.
Nader Saadeh was taken into custody May 5 while allegedly attempting to travel overseas to join ISIS. He had lived in Rutherford until that point.
Saadeh’s brother, Alaa, along with at least three others in New York and New Jersey, were arrested in recent months in connection with the alleged ISIS cell.
The FBI said Nader Saadeh posted anti-American messages online beginning in 2012 and repeatedly viewed ISIS videos. The agency said he praised the burning alive of a captured Jordanian pilot by ISIS fighters and said that, as well as the murders of several staff members of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris earlier this year were justified.
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Another drone was reported Sunday in the path of several flights at a Tri-State Area airport.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said a drone was found on the final approach path to Runway 4 Right at Newark Liberty International Airport between noon and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
As CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, air traffic control tower audio captured the disturbing incident.
“Attention all aircraft use caution,” an air traffic controller warns. “Drone activity reported left side.”
The drone was spotted by the pilots of four commercial flights, which were between 2,000 and 3,000 feet in the air and between eight and 13 miles from the airport at the time, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The flights were ExpressJet 3267, an Embraer E145; Northwest Airlink 5837, an Embraer E170; United Airlines 107, a Boeing 767; and United Airlines 1210, a Boeing 737, the FAA said.

Man in critical condition after being shot by police in Ferguson

Ferguson (United States) (AFP) – Tensions flared in the US city of Ferguson late Sunday as looters targeted at least one store following a day of somber remembrance to mark the anniversary of the police shooting of an unarmed black teen.
A crowd of about 50 people looted a beauty store in the St. Louis suburb and protesters grew confrontational late in the evening. There was no immediate word of any arrests.
Demonstrators had taken to the streets of Ferguson to mark the anniversary of 18-year-old Michael Brown’s death in a fateful encounter on August 9, 2014 with officer Darren Wilson.
The shooting — and a subsequent decision not to indict Wilson — led to violent unrest and set off nationwide protests and intense scrutiny of heavy-handed police tactics in a series of cases that ended in the deaths of unarmed blacks.
Sunday’s day of remembrance had been peaceful until a handful of protesters grew rowdy later in the evening. A crowd of about 300 people had gathered earlier to mark the anniversary, during which they observed four and a half minutes of silence and released two white doves.

FERGUSON, Mo. — A man was in a critical condition Monday after exchanging gunfire with police during protests marking the one-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar told reporters the suspect is in a critical, unstable condition in a local hospital and undergoing surgery.
Speaking at a new conference, he said the shooting occurred after plainclothes detectives monitored an individual in the crowd who they believed was armed, and who was believed to have three or four armed acquaintances.
The suspect crossed the street and fired on the officers’ vehicle. Police returned fire and the suspect was shot, Belmar said.
Belmar said the shot man was involved in an earlier shooting nearby that involved two groups exchanging gunfire.
“There is a small group of people who are intent on making sure we don’t have peace. That’s unfortunate,” he said. “We can’t afford to have this kind of violence.”
He said there were probably six different shooters involved in the shoot-out that preceded the officer-involved shooting.
The eruption of violence came as tensions between police and protesters mounted during the night after a day of peaceful protests. Before the shots rang out, some protesters began screaming at the line of police. Officers then moved to close the streets and demanded demonstrators move off the road.

The country saw another surge of illegal immigrant families crossing the border in July, a top Homeland Security official told a federal court late Thursday as the administration begged a judge not to forbid detention of new migrant mothers and children.
Deputy Border Patrol Chief Ronald Vitiello said the number of illegal immigrant families captured at the border rose in July, bucking a trend and worrying officials who had been expecting the number of families to drop as the heat increases in late summer, just as the number of unaccompanied minors does.

RIDGEWOOD – The future of the village-owned Schedler property – a crumbling 200-year-old house on seven wooded acres abutting Route 17 – was suddenly back on the council’s agenda last week because of an impending deadline.
Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said time was running out to apply for a matching grant from the Bergen County Historic Trust Fund that would be used to stabilize the building.
In 2009, Ridgewood purchased the thickly wooded property, believed to have been the site of a Revolutionary War encampment or battle, with $2.7 million in open space grant money specified for active recreation. The move preempted any commercial development of the site.
Resident Isabella Altano – representing Ridgewood Eastside Development, a grass-roots citizens group – pleaded with the council Wednesday night to meet the grant’s deadline next month.
The house, which was occupied by Florence Schedler until she died in 2007 at age 104, “is in dire need of help,” Altano said. She said the “roof is falling and mold is present.”
Altano said an anonymous donor had placed $45,000 in an escrow account, earmarking the funds for the structure, but village officials said the fact that the source of the money is unknown is an issue.

The Primetime Debate:
Trump was Trump. Aside from the Mexico question, all the questions were personal attacks. Good for him for staying aggressive. He’ll have to get more tangible and specific on more issues to maintain his front-runner status. He’s definitely not a moron. His ego is nothing new, by the way, folks. Teddy Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, LBJ, hello? And he has to be brilliant to maintain a multi-billion dollar business empire and reach the proverbial summit in multiple fields, including publishing and television. He’s to modern television what JFK was to early television.
Bush did very well, but, as has been pointed out, the dynastic thing isn’t popular, including with me. We’ve made exceptions in the past, but not a three-time one. He was prepared with good answers since they were the same questions he’s always asked about, such as the “If you knew then what you know now about Iraq” question. Nothing new from Jeb.
Scott Walker treaded water. His record is fantastic; but as he pointed out, he’s normal, and modern America wants sensationalism, not vanilla. He’s lost in the crowd.
Mike Huckabee performed very well. He stood out almost as well as Trump. Some great lines too: the Hillary comment toward the end when folks thought he was talking about Trump; also, the military social experiment line was superb. He’ll be a long-haul contender with his demeanor and wit. (Reality is, whether you like it or not, that’s what the voters eat up.)
Ben Carson was smooth, methodical, extremely intelligent, and held his own. His closing remarks may have been the night’s highlights. If he isn’t given the VP nod, if not the Presidential nominee, it would be a terrible mistake. The guy’s a neurosurgeon for crying out loud, so he can learn politics and international relations easily enough: nothing more than history and social skills, people.
Ted Cruz was another who performed very well that night. He had the best overall mixture of responses: his record, his family, his plans. Hell, he was one of only two to lay out tangible specifics, and that’s guts right there in an age when hair-splicing occurs over every word! This guy is a force to be reckoned with. A brilliant contender.
Marco Rubio, I thought, treaded water as well. Nothing stood out with him, and he was ho-hum throughout. If he performs that way, he’ll be forgotten soon enough. I found him to speak ambiguously on most things, save his faith.
Rand Paul was way, way too controversial and fisticuffs. You think Trump is aggressive, holy cow! Paul outdid Trump in that regard during the debate. While he isn’t necessarily wrong on most issues for the base, Paul often comes across as leaning wrong. Being the most libertarian candidate on the stage will naturally produce a perception of political radical. He’s principled and didn’t backstep on anything, though.
Chris Christie did surprisingly well, I thought. He stuck to his guns, he showed his Jersey Attitude, and had some almost-memorable lines. He was the other one to lay out some specifics, good for him. He’ll gain ground if he keeps it up.
Jon Kasich was great overall. He came across as the most genuine, and he wasn’t nervous like Carson was. He mixed up variety into his messaging well. His was a good, solid performance, and this first national spotlight for him has elevated his status too. Kasich will most definitely be picking up ground, but I don’t think he’ll pull off the nomination unless he gets more aggressive and more memorable.
The other major players were the three Fox News moderators: Chris Wallace, Megan Kelly, and Brett Baier. They asked some tough questions depending on the candidate, and there was particular animosity toward Trump. The three, particularly Kelly and Wallace, came across as Rupert Murdoch hacks, following Murdoch’s marching orders to take out the front-runner. Nothing fair or balanced in that. Treat all candidates equally, which the three did not.
By the way, don’t even bother paying attention to the 5 o’clock debate. The only one from that pack who has any chance is Carly Florin, but she’s a long-shot too.
