The Shared Housing Association for Ridgewood and Environs (SHARE, Inc.) is hosting a Winter Workshop series designed to address issues concerning seniors, their families and caregivers. Area residents are invited to attend these free programs presented by local service providers and businesses.

The following workshops will be held at the SHARE residences indicated in January and February:

While cultivating its new policy, the Shade Tree Commission is also sprouting an informative webpage on the village website for residents interested in planting shade trees in their grassy medians in fall 2015.

According to Councilman Michael Sedon, the commission will have a better sense of the specifics of its now-bare policy after its next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. (appropriately) in Village Hall’s Garden Room. Sedon serves as the council’s liaison to the commission.

Ridgewood NJ, The Valley Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute is one of 17 preeminent cardiac surgery centers in the United States and Europe selected to participate in a clinical feasibility trial of a new implant designed to support vein grafts used in performing a cardiac bypass procedure. The trial is included among a robust list of clinical trials currently underway through The Valley Hospital Okonite Research Center.Alex Zapolanski, M.D., Director of Cardiac Surgery, and Juan B. Grau, M.D., Director of Cardiac Translational Research and site principal investigator of the trial at Valley, recently performed their first implant of an eSVS® Mesh as part of the Kips Bay Medical eMESH I clinical feasibility trial.

The Company expects to enroll up to 120 patients at 10 European and seven U.S. sites. In addition to The Valley Hospital, the U.S. sites include the Cleveland Clinic, Emory University Hospital Heart and Vascular Center, the Mayo Clinic, the Lenox Hill Hospital, Northeast Georgia Medical Center and the Texas Heart Institute.

“After completing my first case, I found the eSVS Mesh to be remarkably easy to implant and feel very comfortable with the device,” Dr. Zapolanksi said.  “I am pleased that we are able to be part of the eMESH I trial and it is my hope that this device will open the door to improved long-term outcomes for CABG surgery patients.”

An estimated 82 million Americans suffer from one or more types of cardiovascular disease. It is the cause of 1 out of every 6 deaths in the U.S., and every year more than 395,000 Americans undergo coronary artery bypass surgery to mitigate its effects.

The Kips Bay Medical eSVS Mesh is designed to address the limitations of saphenous vein grafts used in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The eSVS Mesh is fitted like a sleeve on the outside of saphenous vein grafts to strengthen the grafts. By strengthening the graft and preventing the damaging expansion of the vein graft, Kips Bay hopes to reduce or prevent the resulting injury which can lead to graft failure and potentially costly and complicated re-interventions for patients undergoing CABG surgery. This innovative design is also intended to ensure that blood flow is faster and more laminar, by reducing the diameter mis-match between the graft and target artery.

A strip mall that will house a Starbucks café and seven other retail and restaurant tenants is taking shape on Route 17 in Ridgewood, one of the first ground-up, new construction, retail centers in recent memory.

The project is rising on a former vacant plot near the intersection of southbound Route 17 and Linwood Avenue. The owner of the land, Malvern Burroughs, has been trying to develop the property since the 1980s, and received approval for the 15,000-square-foot retail center in November 2013.

The structure is expected to be completed in late spring, with store openings in the fall, said Laurence Liebowitz of Landmark Real Estate, which is leasing the center.

Installation of the brick-and-limestone façade of the building is expected to begin Jan. 15, Liebowitz said.

While there have been numerous redevelopments of retail properties on Route 17 over the past decade, a brand-new retail center on formerly vacant land is uncommon. Burroughs had proposed other uses for the land, including townhouse apartments and an office building, but could not win approval for those projects from the Ridgewood Planning Board.

“Between 2004 and 2008 the departure of wealth, investment, and income was staggering — some $70 billion left the state,” Christie explained, quite accurately. “We have begun a new direction and we need to go further, not reverse course.”

The only “news” in today’s well-delivered but substantively modest State of the State address involved an expansion of drug addiction treatment services (a pet issue for the Governor) and this:

And then he said it again, infused with a little characteristic humor, when the Democrats sat on their hands:

So there’s that.

And the Governor certainly said plenty about the future, including a very articulate demand for “the legislature today to open your eyes and ears to the lessons of Mercedes and to act now to lower taxes and prevent another such departure,” something I was hoping he’d discuss in the proper context. And he did. New Jersey’s affordability crisis should always should be priority #1.

He also pledged to veto any income tax increase:

A few other items of interest?

(1) Christie isn’t resigning for the primary… but maybe the general?

As one of our readers pointed out via social media, Chris Christie added the significant modifier “I will be here in one year…” to his prepared remarks, beginning “So that when we stand here in one year…”

So he may be running for president, Save Jerseyans, but he’s likely not resigning for the primary portion at least.

(2) Several favorite (and important) Christie topics got no attention.

He’s put a lot of work into some of these items, Save Jerseyans, but if you take a hard look at his remarks, you will notice some glaring omissions:

No mention of Atlantic City
No mention of the Transportation Trust Fund (or a gas tax – distinguishable from the income tax!)
No mention of Hurricane Sandy (one reference to the Shore, in passing, generally)
He only mentioned property taxes 5 times, and each reference referred back to the 2.0 cap and its success

His most-discussed topic? $54.8 million for mandatory drug treatment. My response: why not a pilot statewide voucher program? Trapped kids > drug addicts. And I’m sorry, but I still throw up a little bit in my mouth every single time I see Jim McGreevey. Always will.

RIDGEWOOD — Two cousins, one of them a member of the United States Marine Corps, were accused by authorities on Tuesday of firing bullets into an empty church two times late last year, incidents that police said left the community on edge and led to stepped up patrols.

Joseph Galli, 21, of Somerville and Alex Norrell, 22, of Ridgewood both have been arrested on charges related to firing more than 40 rounds of ammunition into the Old Paramus Church on East Glen Avenue on Nov. 16 and Dec. 26, authorities said during a news conference to announce the arrests. Authorities said they believe that the men used the church as a target only because it is convenient and isolated from other buildings.

Galli, a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, allegedly did the shooting on both occasions, according to Chief John Ward of the Ridgewood police. He was arrested in North Carolina on Monday and is expected to be extradited to Bergen County, authorities said.

Despite all the potholes, unlit roadways and cellphone abuse that made driving a sour experience for many New Jerseyans last year, 2014 offered at least one sweet conclusion: The death count for drivers and passengers fell to its lowest level in several decades — 380 fatalities, according to preliminary state police figures. Even bicycling deaths dipped at bit to 13.

But for those traveling New Jersey roadways on foot, 2014 marked the deadliest time in 18 years. Crashes killed 172 pedestrians last year, a figure that exceeded the previous year’s pedestrian tally by more than 30 percent and accounted for more than 30 percent of all the road deaths recorded in 2014.

The most hazardous county by far was Bergen with 24 pedestrian fatalities, including an on-duty special police officer killed two days after Christmas in Cliffside Park — the second fatal crash to take an officer’s life in the county last year. The county’s pedestrian death count was so large that it doubled its driver death count, a highly unusual occurrence. Walking deaths were even greater than the combined pedestrian death counts in Camden (the second-deadliest county at 18) and Passaic (five).

New Jersey’s pedestrian figure was high enough to make the state’s traffic safety chief shake his head with worry.

Gov. Christie’s head of transportation said Monday he is against any cutbacks in PATH service between New Jersey and Manhattan, opposing a report commissioned by his boss and Gov. Cuomo that suggested eliminating overnight service to save the Port Authority millions of dollars each year.

On January 12th, 2015 the Ridgewood Police Department made two arrests in relation to the Old Paramus Reform church investigation.
Joseph M Galli from Somerville NJ age 21 was arrested and charged with:
2C:17-3(B)(1) – Criminal Mischief in excess of $2000 – 3rd degree
2C:39-4A – Possession of a Firearm for an unlawful purpose – 2nd Degree
2C:39-5F – Possession of an Assault Firearm – 2nd Degree
2C:39-3B – Possession of a Sawed Off Shotgun (Short Barreled Rifle) – 3rd Degree
2C:39-9B – Manufacturing a Sawed Off Shotgun (Short Barreled Rifle) – 3rd Degree

The accused is currently in the custody of the Onslow county sheriff’s department of North Carolina awaiting extradition to Bergen County.

Bail set at $75,000 no 10%. Alexander Norrell was served his complaints at the Bergen County Jail and reprocessed. This bail was in addition to the $30,000.00 previously set on the Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Paraphernalia, and possession of High capacity magazine charges. The accused is currently in Bergen county jail unable to post the updated $105,000.00 bail no 10%.
While this matter is still under investigation, we wanted to provide information of these arrests to hopefully provide some level of comfort for our community which has been understandably shaken by this event. To help further alleviate any further concerns it should be said that there are no other suspects believed to be involved in this incident.

The Ridgewood Police department would like to thank the Bergen County Prosecutors office, Bergen County Sheriff’s office, the Bergen County Regional SWAT team, NCIS, ATF, Somerville Police Department and all the other agencies who have and continue to assist with this multi-faceted investigation.
Additionally we would like to thank our community leaders and the public for their trust and patience during this investigation.
While this incident is still under investigation, we would like to reassure the public that we will continue to do everything in our power within the confines of the constitution to ensure the ongoing security of our community.

All defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Governor Christie has notified legislative leaders that he will nominate nine attorneys to fill vacant Superior Court judgeships in Bergen County, a strong sign of hope that emergency procedures put in place months ago to ease a crippling case backlog could soon be lifted.

The package of judicial candidates, which includes a mayor and a municipal prosecutor, is expected to be announced by the governor today when the Senate holds its first quorum of the year. The governor is also scheduled to deliver the annual State of the State address to a joint session of the Legislature at 2 p.m.

“This is good news,” said Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck.

“I think they’re all good people,” said Sen. Gerald Cardinale, R-Demarest.

Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak declined to comment on the pending judicial nominees on Monday.

The unusually high number of judicial vacancies — Bergen County has a total of 36 judgeships — forced Assignment Judge Peter E. Doyne to implement a series of emergency measures in September to keep criminal cases on schedule as he awaited action from lawmakers in Trenton.
