Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel resigned Monday, becoming the first casualty of the Obama administration since Democrats suffered significant losses in this month’s midterm elections.
Hagel, the only Republican in Obama’s cabinet, was brought to the Pentagon to reduce budgets and wind down the war in Afghanistan.
His departure comes as the White House faces criticism over its handling of a new terrorist threat — the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and questions had been raised about whether Hagel was the right man for that job.
Obama announced Hagel’s departure in a White House ceremony were he was flanked by Hagel and Vice President Biden. He hailed Hagel as an “exemplary defense secretary” who had put the military “on a firmer footing.”
“I’ve known him admired him and trusted him for nearly a decade,” said Obama, who then added that Hagel had decided “it was an appropriate time for him to conclude his service.”
A senior administration official said the two had been discussing the possible transition since October. The president plans to nominate a successor shortly, but Hagel said he would remain in the post until that person is confirmed by the Senate.
Hagel, clearly emotional, said the “greatest privilege” of his career was leading the men and women of the Pentagon.

Ridgewood Resident Hit by “Green Dot Money Card.” Scam
Ridgewood Police report on Nov. 14: A Goffle Road resident reported that he had received a call from an unknown person identifying themselves as an agent from the U.S. Treasury department. According to police, the caller claimed that the victim owed back taxes and that the authorities would arrest him if he did not pay using “Green Dot Money Cards.” The case is currently under investigation. Police said this is a scam that has been occurring in numerous and different forms. Police advise that government agencies will not request any payment using Green Dot, and no payments should ever be paid without receiving written bills and verification of the debt owed. Scammers now using Green Dot MoneyPak cards

PHOENIX (CBS5) -Scams of all kinds have historically involved the victim wiring cash to a stranger, but now that many consumers have gotten wise to this fact, scammers have found a new way for them to pay them.
They’re called Green Dot MoneyPak cards. They’re reloadable debit cards, available everywhere, and you can use them to pay your phone, cable, or credit card bill. They’re typically for people who don’t have, or want, bank accounts.
Scammers like them because they’re more convenient than a money wire, but just as untraceable.
“My fear was that I was going to lose my job, and my home, and my car,” Dean DeVirgilio said.
Even with his autism, DeVirgilio still tends to all his own affairs. Recently, he got a call from a debt collector who claimed DeVirgilio owed $1,300 on an old payday loan. The caller said, “pay it, or else.”
“Threatened to send the sheriff to my workplace, send a warrant for my arrest, and have me in jail for three years for fraud,” DeVirgilio said.
Federal law prohibits debt collectors from using intimidation, threats and harassment, and no one can be jailed over a debt. DeVirgilio should have realized then he was dealing with a scam artist and the debt wasn’t real. Instead, he sent the scammer the money.

The father does not want to say no.
Anthony LoSauro’s two young sons love football. He loves football.
He played at Bergen Catholic and then at Division III Middlebury. But the Ridgewood dad understands the risks. LoSauro sometimes wonders if the four concussions he suffered in his career have slightly slowed his memory recall.
So even with two years remaining before his older son is eligible to play tackle football, LoSauro and his wife, Marybeth, already agonize over the question: Should they let him?
“I’m definitely conflicted about it,” said LoSauro, the father of A.J., 6, and Will, 4. “It’s a hard decision. The subject goes back and forth with us.
“It’s a back-and-forth in a lot of parents’ minds right now.”
As another youth football season draws to a close and the high school state playoffs are in full swing, the LoSauros’ dilemma illustrates the difficult decision facing parents: Does the game’s intrinsic value outweigh its inherent injury risk?

A state legislator on Monday asked for a criminal investigation into Kean University’s failure to get competitive bids for the purchase of a $219,000 conference table made in China.
Assemblyman Joseph Cryan, D-Union said he is drafting a letter to ask the Attorney General’s office to review Kean’s process in waiving the bidding for the table, which cost as much as ten times more than similar furniture purchased by other schools.
The Record reported today that Kean’s leaders had agreed to spend up to $270,000 for the 22-foot circular table that was installed in the rooftop conference space of the new Green Lane building at the taxpayer-supported school in Union Township.
Chris Harris Puff Piece : Ridgewood to hold public discussion on civility in society

THE RECORD
RIDGEWOOD — Mayor Paul Aronsohn will lead a public discussion tonight on the overall need for more civility in society.
“I’ve been in municipal government for more than six years and most of the time there’s a good exchange that happens — whether people agree or disagree,” Aronsohn said. “But there’s this certain level of hostility that sometimes takes the conversation in a bad place.”
Tonight’s event also will feature Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck, the Rev. Jan Philips of the Religious Society of Friends and Rabbi David Fine of Temple Israel.
Aronsohn said that during his years in municipal government, he’s seen coarseness be a distraction and watched as people berate experts testifying at public meetings. He has fielded complaints from parents, who sometimes deal with incivility on athletic fields, and he’s seen the issue pop up in online comments on articles reporting on village news.
“It’s good and fine to disagree, but we should be able to disagree without being disagreeable,” Aronsohn said. “I don’t want to sound Pollyanna-ish, but there has to be a better way to do this.”
Reader says If the Mayor and his Amigos invited everyone that they have be uncivil to they would have to rent out MetLife Stadium
Did the mayor personally invite Tom Riche, Bernie Walsh, Ken Gabbert, and John Ward to this feel good session?
The meeting sounds like it could be a good one. I would like to see former Council members return to commenters microphone and share their views on today’s happenings.
“And how about Tony Merlino, Steve Sanzari, Marcia Ringel…..surely he invited them since he has always been so civil toward them.”
If the Mayor and his Amigos invited everyone that they have be uncivil to they would have to rent out MetLife Stadium
Reader says the Council is uncivil and obnoxious as ever
Great photo! That is at the Jul 1 reorg meeting.m Lorraine Reynolds is at the podium asking them in very strong terms to make Susan Knudsen the Deputy Mayor, per a long standing tradition that the highest vote getter have this position. Nope, no way. They did not even respond to Lorraine, and of course the Deputy Ego went on to maintain his title with a scratchy unintelligible vote skyped in from a safari with the duke. The people had spoken loudly, they wanted Sedon and Knudsen. And our elected morons ignored us swiftly.
The choice of photo is ironic, it is the Council being as uncivil and obnoxious as ever.
Reader says Forget it Mr. Mayor. You have set the tone with your horrible group of three, you guys are nasty and vindictive, way WAY worse than anyone who speaks up at meetings.
This thing stinks on so many levels.
1. The mayor has absolutely no right to tell us how to speak, unless of course threats are made or profanity is used. Other than that, we as US citizens can say what we want at public meetings. 2. We are not in kindergarten. We do not need to be told how to behave. This is so embarrassing for him, actually for all of us, to have our government “leader” telling us to go play nice in the sandbox. 3. He himself does not behave in a civil manner at all times, and even though he winds up being apologetic he will do it again and again and again. Some of the many examples of his uncivil behavior are listed in earlier posts on this thread. 4. The Deputy Mayor is a million times worse than the Mayor. He absolutely cannot keep his hot temper in check and he makes snide comments on a regular basis. He is everything that a leader, a public figure, should NOT be. He really is so much lower than the Mayor. 5. Councilwoman Hauck is, likewise, quite capable of spitting venom and sarcasm from the dais and she does it often.
All in all, this meeting is a ridiculous folly. Paul must want to posture as a great peacemaker, a world diplomat. Forget it Mr. Mayor. You have set the tone with your horrible group of three, you guys are nasty and vindictive, way WAY worse than anyone who speaks up at meetings.
Councilman Pucciarelli attacks Marcia Ringel for merely exercising her civil right to speak November 21,2014 Marcia Ringel
On July 21, 2014, after Councilman Pucciarelli had raked me over the coals (and before he did more of it) for my comments on the way the election of mayor and deputy mayor had been arranged with the help of Skype, the mayor took over. In one of his comments he used phrasing identical to what is in his email message posted here.
I was startled, considering that I hadn’t used profanity, approached the dais, even raised my voice–merely exercised my civil right to speak. Haul in the clergy to teach us how to behave? It sounded canned. Five months later, we see that it was.
Next Monday night’s meeting has clearly been in the works since at least early summer. Those words were on the tip of his tongue in July.
Is the intention to use the clergy’s comments as an excuse for rewriting ordinances on public deportment at meetings? Is it appropriate in the first place to introduce clergy to discussions of public issues in such a setting? No.
Should this not be a real public meeting with appropriate public notice–not a private meeting in which the names of attendees are checked in advance? What is happening here? These sort-of-private, sort-of-public meetings on important topics that legally squeak through because fewer than three council members are present are an insult to residents and to the rules of governance. All council members SHOULD be present to hear such things if they are heard at all.
At a council meeting on July 21, 2013, after the Village had refused to buy a Mobi-Chair for Graydon after years of empty talk about making Graydon handicap accessible, I suggested from the podium that the mayor resign, with an apology, from Access for All. I said I could see an invisible “H” on the wall behind the dais, and it stood for Hypocrisy.
Reader says Mr. Aronsohn – you made your bed, now lie in it.
So let me get this perfectly straight, after Mayor Aronsohn and his 2 sidekicks have PUBLICLY:
1) Belittled Tom Riche, accusing him of an inappropriate business relationship with the Village 2) Accused former Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh of trying to get a parking ticket fixed 3) Conducted a scathing performance review of former Village Manager Kenneth Gabbert which led to his firing 4) Interrogated Police Chief John Ward insinuating that he violated a number of Village policies by hiring 2 new police officers. Then, after the Chief was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, refusing to offer an apology of any sort 5) Lashed out at numerous taxpayers during the public comment section of Council meetings (Marsha Ringle, Ellie Gruber, Anne Loving, Boyd Loving, Ron Verdicchio, William Corcoran, Frank Delvecchio, and more)
Now all of a sudden they’re asking for “Civility in our Public Discourse?”
Message to you Mr. Aronsohn – you made your bed, now lie in it.
Can social media do more to push Small Business Saturday?

* Marketing push to harness the power of apps, social media
As North Jersey retailers gear up for Small Business Saturday this week, some groups hope to drum up extra foot traffic with the help of tweets and status updates on social media.
The Upper Main Alliance in Hackensack and the Englewood Chamber of Commerce are two of the many organizations that hope to draw customers on Saturday to local shops with a marketing push — which includes leveraging Facebook, Twitter and even Foursquare.
Small Business Saturday, now in its fourth year, is the brainchild of American Express to get more people to shop, ostensibly while using their credit cards, at local businesses across country. The idea is that small businesses will offer deals or discounts specifically for the day.
Albert Dib, executive director of the Upper Main Alliance, said some 166 retailers and restaurants in the city are members of the alliance, which is the core target of Small Business Saturday. Word will be spread, he said, across the different social media platforms about the deals being offered at shops in Hackensack for the day. The alliance is an advocate for the city’s business improvement district and works in conjunction with the city to address needs of the business community.
