Xanadu case revives ethics debate

Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan is urging Freeholder Chairman David Ganz to again reconsider the county’s pay-to-play ordinance, citing the recent indictment of a former Democratic Party chairman as grounds for tightening the current law.
But judging by their exchange of barbed remarks last week, a new negotiation over the limits on campaign contributions by the county’s no-bid contractors does not appear imminent.
Donovan, a Republican, began the exchange with a letter Wednesday in which she cited the recent indictment of Joseph Ferriero and “the negative light it once again shines on Bergen County and the Democrat Party as a whole.”
A federal grand jury indicted the former Democratic power broker Sept. 11 on allegations that he accepted bribes and kickbacks and extorted money from the former developer of the Meadowlands project once known as Xanadu.
Lonegan: Cory Booker Is and Would Be an Empty Desk
“Booker has a penchant for being absent when duty calls. Not only is he an absentee property owner, but he is also an absentee mayor. The people of New Jersey have every reason to believe he would be an absentee Senator, if elected.”
MONROE TOWNSHIP, NJ – Mayor Steve Lonegan, the Republican candidate for the United States Senate, held a fundraiser this evening and discussed issues of national importance. Lonegan was also asked about Booker’s newly aired advertisement.
The ad starts out with a scan of a desk clean of papers and Cory Booker’s voiceover saying, “As mayor, I didn’t sit behind a desk….”
“Cory Booker’s new ad got one thing right,” Lonegan said. “If he is elected to the United States Senate, he will be an empty desk. Even as mayor of Newark, he spends his time traveling from coast to coast, peddling his failed policies, at the expense of his city.”
“Booker has a penchant for being absent when duty calls. Not only is he an absentee property owner, but he is also an absentee mayor. The people of New Jersey have every reason to believe he would be an absentee Senator, if elected.”
Ridgewood NJ, The BYO bogg bag! I’m a bit partial to this one though…1) I made it because I like it 2) My husband designed the wine glasses instead of our regular holes 3) It’s the color of my hometown – Ridgewood, New Jersey and, 4) The bogg bit is for Ridgewood sports – GO WOOD!
In celebration of some great wins this week I am going to give the first 20 people to comment “I the BYO bogg bag” the opportunity to get the BYO bogg bag for $20 (regular retail $30) AND I will throw in the “wood” bogg bit for free ($5 value)! That’s a $15 savings! Think gifts for the holidays

RIDGEWOOD — Construction should be completed by next summer on a controversial ramp for the disabled at Graydon Pool, officials said last week.
The Village Council voted 4-1 on Wednesday to award the project to C&C Masonry Inc. of Ridgefield.
Twelve bids were received late last year for the project. C&C Masonry was the lowest bidder.
The company will perform the work for $48,458, officials announced. Councilman Thomas Riche cast the lone vote against hiring C&C Masonry.
The vote came after the state Department of Environmental protection granted final approval for the ramp’s construction, ending more than two years of debate.
In Bi Partisian Move Bergen County Freeholders approve Resolution in Opposition of Common Core.……
Tue, 17 Sep 2013
by Susan
Tonight the Bergen County Freeholders unanimously and with great enthusiasm passed the Resolution in Opposition of Common Core Standards and Assessments!
I have never seen them act with such determination, vigor and unanimity. Each one added their reason why it is destroying the education of our students. Freeholdesr Voss and Mitchell sponsored the resolution and it was approved by the body of the whole. Chairman Ganz wanted each member to have a chance to voice their opinions.
This was Democracy at it’s finest at work! Comments included: We must teach Students to be critical thinkers; stimulate them and teach them how to think. Common Core is brainwashing! Stimulate them and find ways of learning. Worst thing that can happen to kids in the US and NJ The tests are for funding, Education today is not what it was. We must go back to where teachers can teach! It violates our rights vis a vis Family data. Teacher evaluations are taking priority now. Individualize the tests, What is the ruse? We must do what is best for the students and educators. Unconstitutionality of Common Core Dumbing down our children Cookie cutter approach We should find the gift in each student Our children are less and less prepared for college and life Make education a priority Support our teachers and out schools Do it State by State.
The enthusiasm was unbelievable They were excited by the fact that they were all working together on this. They believe that they have set an example for others. They agreed that Common Core is not for our children and schools!
This was 100% bi partisan 4 Democrats, 3 Republicans! It was a very exciting meeting and an example of how great things can be accomplished when We The People work together.
BERGEN COUNTY BOARD OF CHOSEN FREEHOLDERS RESOLUTION
IN OPPOSITION OF
COMMON CORE STANDARDS AND ASSESSMENTS
SEPTEMBER 17, 2013
WHEREAS, the Board of Chosen Freeholders believes that the Common Core State Standards initiative is not representative of Bergen County’s residents but rather developed by non-governmental organizations and unelected boards outside of Bergen County.
WHEREAS, the Common Core is financed by private foundation funds and is therefore influenced by private interest and not representative of our voters.
WHEREAS, the Common Core violates privacy laws by requiring storage and sharing of private student and family data without individuals consent.
WHEREAS, the New Jersey Education Association urges the State to “slow down a headlong rush to over-rely on student test scores to evaluate teachers in New Jersey”.
WHEREAS, the Common Core has been repudiated by both Republicans and Democrats and it has been stated that curriculum reform should be done at the state level.
WHEREAS, the Common Core violates Constitutional and Federal Law by granting the United States powers which the Constitution reserves for the States, or to the people.
WHEREAS, the New Jersey General Assembly and New Jersey Senate have introduced legislation to further investigate the principals of The Common Core Initiative, and that The Bergen Board of Chosen Freeholders fully supports the passage of *A4197 and *S2973.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders opposes The Common Core Initiative; asks Congress and the Administration to withdraw support and discontinue funding The Common Core Standards Initiative.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be delivered to Senator Robert Menendez, Senator Jeffrey Chiesa, Governor Chris Christie, Congressman William Pascrell, Congressman Albio Sires, Congressman Scott Garrett, and the entire State Legislative Delegation from Bergen County.
Homeland Security to test BOSS facial recognition at junior hockey game
By Rawlson King
September 20, 2013 –
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will test its crowd-scanning facial recognition system, known as the Biometric Optical Surveillance System, or BOSS, at a junior hockey game this weekend, according to the Russian news agency RT.
With assistance from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, DHS will test its system at a Western Hockey League game in Washington state. The test will determine whether the system can distinguish the faces of 20 volunteers out of a crowd of nearly 6,000 hockey fans, to evaluate how successfully BOSS can locate a person of interest.
According to DHS, BOSS technology consists of two cameras capable of taking stereoscopic images of a face and a back end remote matching system. Stereoscopic images are two images of the same object, taken at slightly different angles that create an illusion of three-dimensional depth from two-dimensional images.
ALAN GREENSPAN WARNS: ‘no viable long-term solution to our badly warped economy’ without fixing political system
By MIKE ALLEN | 09/21/13 10:27 AM EDT
FIRST LOOK – ALAN GREENSPAN, Fed chairman from 1987 to 2006, in a book out Oct. 22 from The Penguin Press, “The Map and the Territory: Risk, Human Nature, and the Future of Forecasting”: “Our highest priority going forward is to fix our broken political system. Short of that, there is no viable long-term solution to our badly warped economy. In America we are being pulled apart politically in ways unrivaled since the aftermath of the 1929 crash. … My first realization of a striking shift in our politics was brought to my attention by the staunch conservative three-term senator from Utah, Robert Bennett. He feared that despite his strong approval ratings, his 2010 reelection bid was by no means secure. In his 2004 reelection, Bennett won 69 percent of the vote. His problem, as he stated it, was unexpected contenders for his Senate seat from his political RIGHT. [The 18-year veteran finished third at the Utah Republican convention and his seat is now held by Sen. Mike Lee, an instigator of the effort to shut down the government over Obamacare.] It was my first awareness of what later came to be known as the Tea Party, a political movement that emerged in 2009 and became a powerful force in the 2010 election. …

U.S. disability rolls swell in a rough economy
By Michael A. Fletcher, Published: September 20
MILLINOCKET, MAINE — The huge mills along the Penobscot River roared virtually nonstop for more than a century, turning the dense Maine forests into paper and lifting the thousands of men who did the hot and often backbreaking work into the middle class.
But the mills have struggled in recent years, shedding thousands of jobs. Now this area, whose well-paying jobs provided an economic foothold for generations of blue-collar workers, has become a place where an unusually large share of the unemployed are seeking economic shelter on federal disability rolls.
Between 2000 and 2012, the number of people in Penobscot County receiving Social Security disability benefits skyrocketed, rising from 4,475 to 7,955 — or nearly one in 12 of the county’s adults between the ages of 18 and 64, according to Social Security statistics.
The fast expansion of disability here is part of a national trend that has seen the number of former workers receiving benefits soar from just over 5 million to 8.8 million between 2000 and 2012. An additional 2.1 million dependent children and spouses also receive benefits.
The crush of new recipients is putting unsustainable financial pressure on the program. Federal officials project that the program will exhaust its trust fund by 2016 — 20 years before the trust fund that supports Social Security’s old-age benefits is projected to run dry.
Ridgewood brawl to air on “RHONJ” Sunday

Reader Suggest “RHONJ” Ban for the Village
Further Humiliation for the Village
This is it — tonight — the big annual Posche-related brawl on “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.” And a few locals with connections to the incident are not exactly looking forward to the replay.
“The embarrassment alone and the level of distraught — I don’t even want to talk about it, ’cause I consider it appalling. I consider it embarrassing. And they are completely fabricating everything that they’re selling,” John Karagiorgis of Paramus said on Wednesday, when asked for a comment about the brawl’s airing.
Tonight’s episode — as well as next Sunday’s fifth-season finale — will feature the infamous March 30 incident at a hair salon in Ridgewood that reportedly pitted cast-mates Joe Gorga of Montville and Chris and Jacqueline Laurita of Franklin Lakes against Karagiorgis, whom the Lauritas accused of spreading rumors that their young son, Nicholas, doesn’t really have autism. The row resulted in cross-complaints of assaults and threats.
“They’re saying that I spoke negatively about a child, a sick child, which I, not now, then or ever, will speak negatively about a child, especially a sick one,” Karagiorgis said Wednesday. “I will protect your child, just like I protect my own. And these people are disgusting.”
