Officials had originally proposed moving the cramped Allendale municipal offices to a new building on the site in August 2021, but according to Councilwoman Amy Wilczynski who told North Jersey Media employees had adopted alternative work methods during the COVID pandemic .”We worked seamlessly to go remote,” ‘We changed a lot of our work habits.” Wilczynski said . The new municipal offices may not be necessary .
The site was originally proposed for 300 multi-housing units by its private owner when the borough of Allendale bought the 12.2-acre site encompassing Andersen Windows at 230 W. Crescent Ave. and Black Millwork at 220 W. Crescent Ave. in 2017. The borough declared the property an “area in need of redevelopment,” giving the borough more freedom to dictate its use and zoning.
A plan to construct a 70-unit apartment complex immediately behind the center remains the same and residents expressed general support for the project, saying a community center/gym will generate less traffic at afternoon/evening hours, lessening impact on the busy West Crescent Avenue/Myrtle Avenue intersection.
